I am currently in therapy and try to read what I can on this subject. This book has been absolutely the best and most helpful and highly recommend. My sweet 21 year old only daughter who was still living with us while attending a local college, became hostile towards us when she started dating a guy in a nearby town she met online and he wanted her out of her parents house. She left and was estranged for 6 months, and since some communication started again, my daughter has written revenge texts about my parenting, her childhood, etc. THIS book talks about this exact scenario in a totally appreciative manner that doenst leave you feeling hopeless.If you don't want to be that bitter, old woman or man, sitting in a chair all alone someday in your 80's because you protected your ego over everything possible then I suggest you read this book. It helped me feel so much better about my future and letting her go and leaving her choices to her. But also not to be continually abused by an adult child and to find your life. Remember we all had a life before we had them, right?!!Being a parent was my job for so long and ingrained in me so has been very difficult to change, and very painful. I have had moments of complete bawling and crying out, to just tearing up in conversations with friends. It's Christmas time while I write this, and while shopping for groceries I had to stop in the aisle, plug my ears for several minutes as a Celine Dion Christmas song came on overhead that was my daughter's and I favorite Christmas song. People probably thought I was off, but if I unplugged my ears for a second I would bawl. More than half my hair has fallen out from the original shock of losing her. It truly is very much like a death and you very much go through the same grief if not worse because you know they are still out there and don't want anything to do with you. She was the lucky one getting out of this home where I am stuck with all the memories of the past 22 years. The property was literally built around her as she grew up and everything a memory.I truly enjoyed raising my daughter and wallowed in every moment. She and I were extremely close and never would've thought this could happen in a million years. But at the same I was overwhelmed and my marriage had issues and there where times where my stress resulted in anger and yelling between my husband and I and of course the daughter caught in the dysfunction. You just have to recognize no one is perfect nor the perfect parent. This book will explain this to you.I am still not reconnected completely with my daughter, we've seen each other a few times, some of it good, some of it went bad. She is living with the guy, but this book has given me ideas and a plan to fight for her and have her in my life again. To accept. To live for myself. I don't want to be that old lady in a chair petting a cat as my only company. I want my daughter in my life and will do what it takes to atleast try.. Thank you Dr. Coleman for this book. I wish you had more reading materials to buy here. This book is brilliant and you have so much to offer all of us!

NOT A BOOK FOR PARENTS OF ESTRANGED ADULT CHILDREN. There is only one chapter in the back of the book devoted to adult children. The title page is sorely misleading. This a book for parents of teenagers.

This book opened my eyes about parenting adult children and helped me understand the dynamics between my adult daughters and me. I don't have major issues with my children, but I felt hurt perhaps because they grew up and I felt that I was no longer important in their lives. My role changed from "indispensable mommy" to a casual consultant in regards to making decisions in my children's lives. The transition to parent young children to adult children feels to me like being demoted from captain of the ship to petty officer third class... but this book helped me understand that dynamic and finally I understood that my role might have changed but never the love between my children and I. I really recommend this book, not only if parents are having issues with their adult children, but even before any issues arise and just to help understand the dynamics between parents and adult children.

This book is written more for parents with difficult teenagers. Teenagers are not "grown" children. There is not much in book for help with grown up children.

This book nailed it for me! It helped me to realize how I got to where I am at, as well as how to untangle this mess. Best of all, I can see that I am capable of having a bright future with or without the cooperation of my child.

It never occurred to me that I would be so disconnected from my child. The sense of loss and failure is sometimes overwhelming. Luckily, I happened across Dr. Coleman's book. I found it gave me a very effective tool in shifting my thinking in the midst of all the pain and other feelings. No matter how you got to the point that you feel you need this, and regardless of the age of your kids, Dr. Coleman's insights will provide a potent addition to how you think about and respond to your own estrangement. Read it, it will help.

Terrific book, well-written with tips to 'strive' for in your relationship with your children. Carefully lets you see your situation from your adult children's point of view. Very helpful without making you feel ashamed or guilty. Highly recommend this book. I learned about it from an article in AARP newsletter that mentioned the author.

Much more insightful than the standard books on this subject. Instead of counseling hurting, estranged parents to bite their tongues and apologize, ad nauseum, Coleman spends a good deal of time offering historical contexts for parent-child estrangment. Very helpful, emotionally. THEN he offers the standard pap, though along with less self-effacing strategies if you choose to re-engage with your adult child. Some decide not to, he points out. Some parts of the book deal with parent-child interactions, from the perspective of adults who have now been shunned by their own adult children. For those who haven't spent their lives in therapy, this would be exceptionally helpful.

The art is gorgeous, but the story is flat and unsatisfying. The comic follows two mage-hunters-for-hire from just prior to the events of Dragon Age: Inquisition, to the events at the end of that same game. Rather than spreading the story out over several volumes, Magekiller attempts to cover that entire time period - and all the themes therein - in fewer than 120 pages. The result is dropped plots, anemic themes and what comes off as a very forced resolution. The lore introduced isn't much better, and frequently amounts only to "X thing exists", rather than providing any meaningful detail.That being said, the writing style is enjoyable and easy to read, and as I said the art is beautiful. If you're committed to owning every piece of Dragon Age merchandise you could do worse than this volume; however, I wouldn't recommend it for anyone but collectors or dedicated fans of the series.

Dragon Age Mage Killer is a comic book set before and during Inquisition and it follows two mage hunters Tessa and Marius and their grand adventure in the world of Thedas. The comic has good art very well drawn. The comic itself was nothing special. It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t that good either. It’s a side adventure that you can easily skip and I recommend you do skip. As the story is just a standard swashbuckling adventure nothing really happens. You see how Tessa and Marius helped the inquisition that’s it. Mage Killer was just okay at the end if you have nothing else to read then you can find some enjoyment otherwise it’s a completely forgettable adventure that you're not going remember it in a week.

It arrived in great condition, and I considered giving it four stars for that, but I'm going to review the content on this. The characters and ideas are interesting, but parts of it were very rushed. We never saw how the characters fully developed within a role in the Inquisition, and there were lots of time jumps from comic to comic. It left the book feeling very unsatisfying.

Adds a lot of backstory to a great series. Loved the relationship between the two main characters.

I love this book but please... When you originally advertise hardcover when I preorder don't change it to paperback without informing me :/ a little disappointed in that fact.

The moment to moment aspects of Magekiller are pretty great. Unfortunately the sun of it's parts aren't as good as the parts themselves. There are a lot of cameos and more to keep this story interesting. But no sooner do some of your favorites show up, they're gone. Hopefully these main characters turn up elsewhere in future tie-ins or games.

Be still my heart!
This book is so much more than you can expect from a love story between a bodyguard and a redhead woman that i just love together and to say that i don't know who to choose as my favourite from these books and characters it's the hardest thing to do really.
The story carries on from the previous book when we met Genevieve as Calandra's personal assistant and Sawyer is one of the Luna and Associates security firm.
As always, the author has created a story where the former military men are in charge always and taking care of the woman in their life as well of the people around them is their to go every day in every situation.
When a dinner invitation goes wrong and unexpected situation comes up, almost everyone is there to help and protect, like a big family that will always protect and help.
Sawyer is swoony, he's s much of alpha as he is attentive and protector of the woman who messed his world with just a smile. He loves what he does and what he becomes and hates his inheritance.
Genevieve had a hard life and when she is in front of him, she's messy and never stops talking. But she is also strong and goes toe to toe with him for what she wants and what she believes
I loved that we get to see more of the other characters that are always there and my God, Talon made me laugh so hard that i will reread for the 5th time his book for sure.
There are some new faces, new characters that hopefully will have their books as well in the future because OMG that Preston guy !!! And Trigger !!!!
A story full of action, suspense, lust and love, exactly what you need and want from a great book.


Readers talk about book boyfriends, a LOT, but man, oh MAN! I would do almost ANYTHING to have Sawyer as a actual boyfriend.. . . . sigh . . . .The author has an absolutely awesome stable of Alpha Heroes & I am not shy to admit I love them ALL (although until Sawyer, Jared was my #1 man, but now Jared is my #1.5 man) but Sawyer . . . . I suppose everyone has certain things that just hit their buttons & Sawyer sooooo does. He just soooo does!!And it isn't that he's fabulously wealthy, it's his calm, his low key but INTENSE personality, his drive to be a better man, to have his life mean more than running a financial empire, to do something with his life that helps humanity. It's his ability to react calmly & decisively in an life & death situation, how he holds to his beliefs & principles, his Alpha persona & his absolute control. And his looks don't hurt either: muscled, tall, perfect posture, long strong legs, handsome.And then there's the skittish, clumsy, klutzy, nervous Genevieve who for some unknown reason, as far as Sawyer is concerned, attracts his interest & focus. Not to mention danger & potential death.All I can say is, although I have read ALL the author's books (& loved them), RUTHLESS truly hit virtually ALL my buttons for a hot & wonderful romance. I identified so much with Genevieve & Sawyer would be my IDEAL as a boyfriend, lover & mate. I was completely captivated for the entire book, smiling, laughing, hoping, worried & sad as Sawyer & Genevieve's story played out.I HIGHLY recommend this one for people who want a romance with a lot of emotional ups & downs, an awesome Alpha, a sweet heroine who has more steel in her than advertised & a little HOT & INTENSE sex.(I am going back to reread RUTHLESS now . . . .)

Ruthless had me captivated & clinging to my book from the beginning, and I did not put it down. I needed to know more about Sawyer and Genevieve. Sybil Bartel has a way of creating her stories and lives of the characters as such that you believe that you could meet on the street. I absolutely loved that Sawyer and Genevieve were not perfect individuals. They both had flaws because let's be honest no one is perfect or without demons. Sawyer and Genevieve are very much opposites. Sawyer is a bodyguard and is a total alpha male all the way. He loves control and order. Genevieve is a bundle of energy and nerves. She talks too much and drops everything. Genevieve has a lot of spunk and fight.I love a sassy heroine. Sawyer and Genevieve have amazing chemistry and tension. I experienced every range of emotion while reading Ruthless. I love all the feels (laughter, tears, etc) and is a sign of a great book in my opinion. We love all the research guides for MTH. They are written at a higher Lexile level than the stories but it makes them fun to read together. My 6 year old doesn't have the patience to read through a research guide the entire way through on her own but together it makes for a fun project...she gets to tell me about what happened in the story to Jack & Annie and together we learn some fun facts about whatever time/place the story was about.

The kids realy like the animations and presentations of this book. While it is definately not boring, the planets themselves get only one page each of factual info in super small text. The solar system overview chapter was great for group reading and was primarily what I used from the book, including a photo of a meteorite in comparison to the size of children. Translation: great as a fun addition to learning but not to replace hard fact texts and in-depth lesson plans.----You don't need to read the accompanying Magic Tree House fiction book in order to use this research guide.

This was a gift. The recipient like it.

It seemed to be a hit with my grandson, but when he doesn't talk about a book, I guess I wonder if he is just being polite.

This book has been sitting on my must read shelf since the year began. I have read the history of Salem and the Witch trails many times over the years and I still learn something new. This book is filled to brim with new information.Many books like to focus on victims, and some even focus on "the afflicted"; those that accused their neighbors of witchcraft. Professor Baker though goes much farther than that and talks about the judges, the people in power and in particular the two Mathers, Cotton and Increase, the learned ministers at the center of this storm.The term "A Perfect Storm" gets thrown around a lot, but here it is appropriate. There was so much going on here that made the witch craze happen here when it was dying out everywhere else. It really was the last gasp of a dying movement of the Old World in the New World.It was the start of the end of Pre-American Puritanism.In this book Salem and 1692 take on a level of cultural impact that the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 did in the United Kingdom.The book is long, 400+ pages, and full of names. But those names belonged to people and those people left others behind. So Prof. Baker also delves into the impact these witch trials had on the new experiment that would become America.This is easily one of those books you can read, do a little more research or reading on the subject elsewhere, and then come back to and learn something new still.If I have one complaint, and that is way too strong of a word, it is that the last chapter was not long enough. I would have loved to have learned more about the cultural impact of 1692 on modern culture and how it shaped America. But that would be a complete other book.Prof. Baker gives us not only a well researched and well-detailed book, he gives us a book that is easy to read and relate to. There was so much going on back in 1692 that we can relate to today.The history of Salem is the history of America. The witch trials of 1692 are also part of America; our darker past that some (like the town of Danvers to a degree) would like to forget.I also listened to the audio book. After listening to interviews with Prof. Baker I kinda wish he had narrated it himself.

If you're interested in learning about the Salem Witch hysteria of 1692/3, you'll find that bookstores and libraries are loaded with options, not to mention websites, podcasts and more - it can be overwhelming. (It's a topic worthy of so many books, of course!) Moreover, academic approaches to this period have varied widely over the last century, with more than a few pushing fairly fringe beliefs (i.e., "It was mold that made them do it!") into unjustified prominence or relying on incomplete records or rumors ("they were fortune-telling!") to advance arguments.Baker does none of that, with an accessible but scholarly look at the period and the hysteria. It's a solid, modern, thoughtful introduction to the period, covering all of the major bases including the run-up and aftermath, and drawing at least one fascinating parallel to present day.Instead of approaching the era on a straight timeline, he looks at it thematically - the accusers, the accused, the trials - making it easier to follow key trends and events as they unfold without being overwhelmed by Proctors, Putnams, etc.Since reading this, I've read a few other modern treatments of the Salem witch crisis; this remains my hands-down favorite, and the first one I'd recommend to anyone looking to learn more about this fascinating period in early American history.

As someone who grew up in Massachusetts but didn't know much about the history of the Salem Witch Trials, I found this to be a comprehensive review of that time and place. Solid insights into the political, economic and religious cross-currents underway during the late 1600's as the Massachusetts Bay Colony evolved and touches on the broader activities underway throughout New England during a transformative time. Nice review of events as much of the focus in history books I've read previously emphasize the later eras just prior to or during the Revolutionary War and not so much on earlier periods. Format of outlining the details of the actual trials at the start of the book and then going back to chronicling the events leading up to them was an informative way to approach the subject. Good read for those wishing to have a better understanding of the era and some interesting analogies to our current world.
