Coyote and the Sky: How the Sun, Moon, and Stars Began

From School Library Journal

Grade 6 Up—In this spare and staid retelling of a Tamaya Pueblo creation myth, the storyteller explains how the sun, moon, and stars first appeared: "A long time ago, the Animal People decided to make a journey up into our world, the Fourth World. Back then, where we lived in the underworld was called Shipap, or the Third World." When they arrive at journey's end, a humorous illustration displays just eyes amidst blackness and the animals cry, "There is no light in the Fourth World! What should we do?" Subsequently, Squirrel and Rabbit return to the Third World three times to gather warm coals that enable them to bring light to the sky; familiar trickster Coyote arrives just in time to grab the third batch of coals and toss it carelessly into the night sky to create the stars and constellations. References to two different worlds may confuse some children and the text is stiff, contrasting sharply with the more lively dialogue and playful interaction found in another Pueblo tale, Valerie S. Carey's Quail Song (Putnam, 1990). The animal figures in the illustrations are static in the style of petrography and are unlikely to engage children who are accustomed to more animated art. Teachers may want to use this story in their multicultural curriculum, although many will find its documentation inadequate. Libraries with large folklore collections might want to purchase it; smaller libraries will want to wait for a picture-book version that is better suited for children.—Kirsten Cutler, Sonoma County Library, CA Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Simple. Elegant. This is a beautifully illustrated book with an appealing tale based on a Santa Ana Pueblo legend about how the sun, moon, stars, and constellations came to be. Coyote, the wily trickster, creates chaos when he refuses to do what he is told and messes up the Animal People's specially placed Sky drawings, which were to created to help light the dark and scary Fourth World. Coyote's mess can still be seen today in star clusters and the Milky Way.The endearing lessons of this story center on responsibility, teamwork, and obedience. The tale can also inspire children to look up at the night sky for constellations. The book is a fantastic way to introduce world stories, observations, and diversity to your classes, both young and old. This is a great book to share along with Jerrie Oughton and Lisa Desimin's "How the Stars Fell Into the Sky," which gives an equally engaging, vibrantly illustrated tale that can be compared and contrasted to "Coyote and The Sky: How the Sun, Moon, and Stars Began." Comparison and Contrast activities help to develop students' critical thinking / reasoning.

Just a fabulous rendition of a story I have long heard.

Great books for both kids and adults!!!

This is a lovely connection to the natural world and to the mythology of the Native American culture. The charming, colorful illustrations and the mischievous text held the interest of my grandchildren (aged 3&4). We read the story in conjunction with attending a live storytelling session with the author at New York's Native American Museum and it was a wonderful way to extend the experience.

Thanks!
