Amazon.com Review

One of Gary Zukav's many gifts as a speaker and bestselling writer is his ability to present complicated metaphysical and spiritual themes in a way that is simultaneously down-to-earth and spine-tingling. How does he do it? Through story--the oldest and most powerful form of teaching the mind and touching the heart. As a frequent guest on Oprah, Zukav has also discovered that the American public is starved for grounded information on ethereal topics such as intuition, soulful relationships, and nonhuman teachers. Soul Stories is a collection of true tales that speak to themes such as "Reincarnation," "A Higher Form of Reasoning," "Psychic Archaeology," "The New Female," and "Universal Humans." Some stories come from Zukav's personal experience, like his sister's auto accident and his mother instantly knowing that her daughter was hurt even though they were 100 miles apart. It is tempting to view these 52 tales of fate, coincidence, and sixth sense with an air of doubt. "You have to decide," Zukav warns. "That means thinking about it and, even more important, discovering what you feel about it. Eventually, you might find that what you feel about a Soul Story is more important to you than what you think about it." No matter what you feel about the individual tales, you will leave this book trusting that the best way to understand the meaning and mysteries of life is through story. --Gail Hudson

Gary Zukav has mentored me (via writings) since Oprah introduced me to him 20+ years ago in her first "Change Your Life" season. Having read Seat of the Soul a few times before reading Soul Stories, I cannot image how Soul Stories "reads" to a Zukav virgin. In a way it's a Cliff Notes versions of Seat of the Soul. Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed its approachable real world stories about profound concepts. It's a delectable desert to the much-to-chew-on Seat of the Soul. Possibly a good way to be introduced to Gary Z. As with all philosophical writings, I digested Soul Stories very slowly - one story every few days - letting each story stand on its own and sink in. Not intended to be a page-turner. I also cherish Seat and Heart of the Soul. But, compared to them, this was FUN to read.

I acquired this set of CDs to listen to while on a long-distance drive. They are very interesting and enjoyable. Zukov teaches moral principles with a series of parables--a long established tool for teaching. The principles he teaches this way are pretty basic, but foundational for us all. For those who feel they're more "advanced", remember that we ALL benefit from review and reminder on the basics. When he got to the subject of men and women that, at times, he came from a more narrow, "traditional" position, which saddened me. This seems to be the one area where he hasn't put away at least some of old fashioned but not necessarily good or helpful attitudes. Otherwise, I must say, this is worth your time. Parents, it will certainly give you additional resources for helping your children understand as well.

I am a long time student on the spiritual path. Every year I select a writer or group of writers as companions to my dally meditation process. In 2013 I spent most of the year with Gary's books. I started by re-reading Seat of the Soul, Heart of the Soul, Mind of the Soul and finishing with Soul Stories.I recommend all of the books and wish any one that chooses to explore his writings blessings on their spiritual path.

What a wonderful gift Gary Zukav has given us! Its simplicity is its brilliance. For those who have read Gary's other book "The Seat of the Soul" and found it to be a little hard to comprehend, "Soul Stories" has taken all of the most complex concepts of that book and just makes them so much easier to understand. If you haven't read the Seat of the Soul yet, this might be a good place for you to start to get a foundation in Zukav's concepts, but the great thing about this book is that it is so readable and yet stands on its own as an explanation of the concepts of the soul and the universe. I want to thank Gary Zukav for his kind words that have meant so much to me, and I have a feeling that he will see this review if he is meant to see it.

I'm into all things spiritual, and love Gary! Love reading about the experiences of everyday people!

zukav has done better. this book is not worth owning, and is not an absolute necessity even if you totally adore gary zukav like i do.

I was recommended this book by my boyfriends aunt and trying to be gracious I took down the name and title. I have to say that I was skeptical about the whole self-help book thing. This is not one of them. It doesn't try to change you. It tells you stories, then lets you decide for yourself whether you will take them to heart or not. I am 25 and my mom just passed away. Not knowing how to cope with the grief I wanted to give this a try. I didn't sit down and read this book in one sitting, I read bits of it and it seemed to weave its way into my life. I strongly recommend this book, whether you are going through hard times or not. I have given it as gifts to people in heartache and they seem to really appreciate it. I re-read it all the time, just to go back through. This book will stay in my collection forever.

I’d been working on my authentic power for a few years and hearing Gary’s explanations gave me the vocabulary to put with all I’d been experiencing. It’s an amazing feeling to know you are finally following your soul! Each day feels purposeful and my life makes sense.

About the Author

While growing up in Olympia, Washington, Allison Williams spent much of her childhood climbing trees and reading books at the top. Family vacations involved camping in the shadow of Mount Rainier or exploring the very dark, probably haunted tunnels of Port Townsend's old forts.Allison received her bachelor's degree in biology and English from Duke University, with studies at Oxford University and an ethnobiology field school in Costa Rica. She worked as a writer and editor in New York City for eight years, including staff positions at Metro daily newspaper and Time Out New York. When the lure of the Northwest's mountains, drizzle, and summer berry harvests became impossible to ignore, she relocated to Seattle. She has since realized two lifelong dreams: summiting Mount Rainier and poking sticks into the campfire without being disciplined.Allison earned her MFA in creative writing at the University of Alaska Anchorage, where her fiction thesis won the Jason Wenger Award for Literary Excellence. Her journalistic work has been recognized with awards from the Society of Professional Journalists and a nomination from the City and Regional Magazine Association. I live in Portland Oregon but was taking a road tripTo Canada! This was my life line! I used it to get to all the best places in Washington along my way up-port angela and such, explained the ferries and the options, websites and all, also the routes to Victoria Canada and the things to do there: I loved Canada by the way! I even left the book in a hotel realized it and called the hotel to pick it back up thank god they had it! I love this book!

My first step on planning any trip is to buy the Moon travel guide for wherever I'm going. I've been using them for years now and they've always led me to great hotels, delicious restaurants, and fun things to see. I only used the Seattle, Portland, and Oregon Coast chapters of this book (I read the Mt. Rainier chapter, but my visit there was so foggy that I couldn't see any of it), but with them I planned a perfect trip to the Pacific Northwest. Thanks to Moon for another excellent travel guide.

This was a huge hit with the receiver of this gift. I looked through it as well and remained impressed with all the information within the book.

I'm using it to plan a future trip to the area

Great up to date book. Love it. I bought two, one for me as a local who gives a lot of tours for visiting family/friends and one for my aunt.

Nice book.

not as much hotel info as i would like

Nice pictures. Good information. I will look for Moon books in the future

A Saint of Our Own: How the Quest for a Holy Hero Helped Catholics Become American, by Kathleen Sprows Cummings

Review

A superb book: deeply researched, consistently interesting, and beautifully written. Kathleen Sprows Cummings makes history come alive with sparkling prose and surprising insights. Her fascinating study of the lives of some of the most remarkable Catholics in history, and the (often labyrinthine) stories of their canonizations, is a must for every American Catholic—and anyone interested in religion in America."—James Martin, SJ, author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage and The Jesuit GuidePeople are fascinated by saints. Even non-Catholics wonder what this 'canonization stuff' is all about, and Cummings shows it all. Ecclesiastical politics and U.S. politics. Personalities of priests, bishops, nuns, and prominent laypeople. Vatican intrigue (several different layers). Understandings of holiness. And the many stories of the women and men who someone, at some time, decided should enter the official canonization process. Whew!"—Margaret M. McGuinness, author of Called to ServeU.S. Catholics know very little of their own story. Kathleen Sprows Cummings's fascinating account of a largely unexplored facet of American Catholic history, full of wonderful stories, helps remedy that self-imposed amnesia, even as it breaks new ground in the social history of the United States."—George Weigel, Distinguished Senior Fellow and William E. Simon Chair in Catholic Studies, Ethics and Public Policy CenterWhat does it mean to be an American Catholic 'saint'? In this captivating book, Kathleen Cummings explains how and why certain American Catholics have been singled out for canonization. The making of American saints, an arduous process, has always been connected to the Catholic Church's hopes and ambitions for the United States. Filled with memorable stories of reformers, martyrs, and activists, A Saint of Our Own offers a bracing portrait of a church trying to sacralize America—and to redeem it."—Catherine A. Brekus, author of Sara Osborn's WorldI could not put A Saint of Our Own down. In this brilliant history of saint-seeking among American Catholics, Kathleen Sprows Cummings illuminates with wit and learning all the ironies and contradictions of U.S. Catholic history. As Cummings traces in thrilling detail, the intricacies of saint-making were as much a matter of politics and prestige—of who knew whom in Rome, who was in and who was out—as of holiness. Sanctity was forever a moving target, tensely poised between heaven and earth. What did not change, though, was the determination of American Catholics to make their values, struggles, and achievements more visible in the modern world by having them officially represented and recognized in the communion of saints in heaven. This is a great book."—Robert A. Orsi, author of History and Presence

This is a beautiful, absolutely pitch-perfect memoir by Dr. Edith Eger. I was not familiar with Dr. Eger prior to reading this, and I am grateful to her for sharing her story. The book is organized into four sections: Prison, Escape, Freedom, and Healing. I would describe it as three parts memoir, one part therapy. It would be enough, simply for nanogeneraian Dr. Eger to tell us her story and share the important events she witnessed in her lifetime. But she is not satisfied to make this book only about her experience. She is clearly a committed therapist who understands pain and forgiveness uniquely, and has a very powerful message that to truly live a full life, we need to make the choice not only to forgive, but to forgive ourselves.I describe the book as pitch-perfect because from the introduction, Dr. Eger explains that there is no heirarchy when it comes to suffering. She does not tell her story so that the reader will minimize their own suffering in comparison, that would just be another way of judging ourselves. As a therapist, she understands that someone whose suffering may seem superficial to others, is generally attributed to something much more deeply rooted, and representative of a much larger pain. I find it extraordinary that she is capable of empathizing with others to this extent. When you read her story, and I hope you do, you will understand the extent of her personal suffering. Not only what she endured in her youth, but as an adult coming to terms with everything she lost, and finding a way to let it be her strength, instead of imagining what her life would have been had it not been interrupted by the cruelty and injustice of the Holocaust. I can not find the words to describe the depth of her compassion.Life is about choices, and I am guilty of the destructive thinking that Dr. Eger drescribes in the book. In my Midewestern upbringing, I was raised to take responsibility for my choices. I pride myself in this responsibility. What this book has made me realize that often in my experience, this has been a punishing idea - there are choices, and there are consequences. But life is not that simple, there are choices and more choices. Often we choose to punish ourselves. In doing so, we are imprisoning ourselves with our own beliefs - of not feeling worthy, a fear of making a bad choice... The author is open about choices she made in her own life, and that they may not have been the best ones. Everyone suffers. Everyone has endured the consequences of their own poor choices. But to live our best life, we must continue to make choices, instead of allowing ourselves to be imprisoned by our past.Thank you, Dr. Edith Eva Eger for sharing your story and your wisdom. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an advance copy of The Choice for review. I enjoyed it so much I purchased a copy from Amazon as a gift.

I have read and re-read this powerful book, and I am now giving copies to my family because I believe the message within is so very important. Dr. Eger, has humanity in every pore of her being, and I wish she was in the Midwest so we could meet her in person. I found myself learning so much through reading this book, learning things about myself, and recognizing things in those that I love, I am hopeful that I can improve as a person and help my loved ones now I have this very valuable information. Everyone has trauma or upset in their lives of some type or another, but few of us know how to handle these things. Dr. Eger shows us with real compassion how to look at ourselves, and how to forgive ourselves, which ultimately is the most challenging thing.. I wish more psychologists were like her, most that I have encountered lack the humanity needed to help guide a person to health, most seem to be talking textbooks and do not look at the real person in front of them, they just try to fit them into a textbook diagnosis and I do not see that ever being an answer. The idea of meaning and purpose in life makes perfect sense, and I truly believe that is what human beings need above all else to thrive in this world. I highly recommend this book, it truly is amazing in every way. Thank you Dr. Eger for your wonderful book, it is a privilege to know your story and gain so much wisdom from it and from you.

An inspiring book like this should be given to all who struggle with themselves. The choices the author made as a young girl are nothing short of amazing, and the way in which she managed to spread her message is miraculous. We know that this sort of miracle only happens when someone is determined and grateful for the insight they have been given by the circumstances which challenged them. This book has a very strong message for us all.

Wha can I say about this beautiful book? In simple but clear and honest words, Edith Eger tells a story of utter horror and fear and how she survived it and then overcame the perils of her survival.Eger’s message is similar to than of her onetime mentor Victor Frankl: how you understand hardship and tragedy will determine not only how you survive, but whether you can stay sane and forge meaning out of it. Without denying the deep hurt and fear, we have to find ways to embrace humanity in the midst of tragedy. If we refuse to search for meaning, to create meaning, then we surrender to the forces of darkness.Almost every sentence is a little gem, clear and full of poetic truths. This is the only way this story could be told, with a radical kind of directness and honesty.

This book reveals the true story of how one young woman transformed her tragic experiences of death and despair in World War ll concentration camps into a meaningful life journey to heal herself and others from pain and destruction. Dr. Ever is a "Phoenix" who rises from the ashes of inhumanity to courageously free herself from the misery of her past. As Eva Ever earns her doctorate in Clinical Psychology, she learns how to reclaim and honor her emotions without blaming others. This healing enables her to empathize with her patients who struggle with taking responsibility for their own welfare and learn to forgive and let go of past pain. Dr. Ever illuminates the message in Dr Frankl's book," Mans Search For Meaning." Both are profound, powerful books.

I had the HONOR TO MEET Dr Eger...this is a must read for everyone! She was such a beautiful woman inside and out! Made everyone she met feel so special...She is amazing...I cannot say enough great things about her...so humble...and I was humbled to meet her!She is such an amazing and sharp public speaker, it was great to hear her talk to a auditorium full of middle school children!
