Maybe I'm being too critical, but I have been struggling with this story for a while now. Originally I was attracted to this novel by its never-before-told aspect along with its emphasis on Italy and the often-overlooked heroes within that country. I had previously read "From Sand and Ash" which first introduced me to this branch of WW2 history even though it was a completely fictitious story. I expected "Beneath a Scarlet Sky" to provide a more accurate account of a real-life person who had been involved in these events. Unfortunately, I have been incredibly disappointed.First, let me say that regardless of how much of this is actually true (and I have my doubts), this fictionalized version of Pino Lella is so unrealistic. Essentially, he's a seventeen-year-old prodigy who can do no wrong. He is strong, clever, exceptionally skilled at pretty much anything he attempts, and he doesn't seem to have any real conflict with or animosity toward anyone (well, except the Nazis). He is quite possibly one of the most unrelatable characters that I've ever come across in a literary work. Just as ONE example, here is a future race car driver complimenting Pino on what a gifted driver he is, because of course he is:"Pino allowed a mild smile. “You catch on fast. I wish I could have finished my driving lessons.” “You are already very, very good, Pino,” Ascari said. “You have the touch, the feel for the car that is rare.” Pino basked in the praise." p. 163 (Kindle edition)Since all the attention is given to Pino and his amazing accomplishments, the supporting characters are extremely bland and indistinguishable. The only thing I really knew about each character was if they were "good" or "bad" (and this was primarily based on whether or not they were German).Second, I was surprised by the simplicity of the writing. At times, the text reads like a middle-grade textbook as it lists off names, facts, and dates. The dialogues felt very stilted and occasionally only consisted of a couple of lines before ending abruptly. If it was going to be so concise, did there really need to be a dialogue at all?While I normally get frustrated with authors who insist on including excessively detailed descriptions of the characters and their surroundings, this book had almost none. This made it hard for me to immerse myself in 1940s Italy. At first, I assumed that perhaps this author just doesn't care to spend a lot of time on superfluous descriptions. However, the passages about Pino hiking went on and on FOREVER! Here were the descriptions I wanted back when I was first introduced to the characters in Milan, but now they were unnecessarily lengthy and only focused on a single character and his "treacherous" hikes through the Alps.Third, precious little in this book actually feels plausible or authentic. There are so many instances of characters (especially Pino) who just happen to be in the right place at the right time. The moment where this novel lost ALL credibility was when Pino, after almost single-handedly digging out from an avalanche, goes skiing with a pregnant woman clutching onto his back. This woman, who had been spotting blood only moments before and felt so weak she couldn't go on, lets out a "Wheeeeeeee" as they race downhill and then plays her violin for him after they reach safety. Ummmm, no. I've read historical fiction with completely fabricated characters and situations that have felt less fictional than this.It grieves me so much - especially considering this is based upon real heroes - but I can neither continue this nor recommend it to others. If you've read it and know that it gets better, let me know and I may give it another shot. But for now, I'm done.

I love historical fiction. I have been reading a lot of WWII historical books lately. I was not really wanting to read 'another' one. But, we were traveling to Milan, and this true story took place in Milan. So, I bought it, and started reading it a few days before the trip. Once we were in our hotel on the street Corso Matteotti, I was amazed to find out that Pino Lella grew up in that area and at onetime lived on that very street! A very well written book. A very amazing life Pino lived. I did not know that Milan was affected so much by WWII. I definitely recommend it. Pictures are of the church San Bbila - the neighborhood where Pino grew up, and of where his parent's purse shop and his uncle's leather shop used to be.

The front and back cover are lovely. The blurb is fantastic but that is where it ends. Boring beginning, stilted dialogue, a hero who is too good to be true contributed to my not finishing this book. I think book quality has spiraled down recently and this is a prime example. Some sentences were incomplete, not grammatically correct and read like middle grade adolescent fiction. I could not get interested enough to read it after perhaps 25%. When I want to read entertaining World War 2 fiction I’ll take out my old Ken Follett books. One thing he always did which makes his books believable is he made his characters human, even the bad ones.

Very poorly written with countless impossible and eyeroll-worthy sequences of events. I was tempted to give it 3 stars only in the hope that someone on the fence would come across my review and treat it as more valid. Absolutely no character development and minimal association with actual history. I don't typically take the time to review anything but given the billions of 5-star reviews this book somehow has, I felt the need. I'm stopping a third of the way through and going back to non-fiction.

Of course, it is Pino Lella we must also praise and thank - for what he did with his young life, his uncommon bravery, his story and letting Sullivan share it with us. I wish I could read it again for the first time.

I'm flummoxed to see so large a population of 4 and 5 star reviews. I have the audio book and I have to say the story seems written by about a 16-year-old for an 8-year-old audience. The storytelling and the dialog between characters is sophomoric; the characters are mere cutouts with no texture, rhyme or reason.I finished about a third of the story and don't plan to listen to it further. Boring and simplistic, not literature at all.And, to be clear, this is a work of fiction. Pure and simple. It is fiction. “Based in a true story” perhaps, but since the author invented events and dialogue we will never know how much of it is fact-based.

I picked up Renée Ahdieh's Flame in the Mist on a whim as the description appealed to a lot of themes I like: high-born girl disguising herself as a boy in order to survive, taking control of her life, infiltrating a gang, discovering things that challenge her pre-conceived beliefs, and the like. And for the most part, I was not disappointed. It reads smoothly, the pacing is well done, and the characters are fairly engaging. That said however, it did have a couple things that I ended up having a problem with, which I will mention later. But for the most part, it was indeed an enjoyable read.Mariko is the only daughter of a high-ranking samurai noble. An ambitious samurai noble who has arranged for her to marry the emperor's second son. While on the road to meet her betrothed in the capitol, her convoy is attacked in the forest by a gang of bandits with the express purpose of killing her. In spite of everyone else in her convoy ending up dead, Mariko miraculously survives, but only because she is believed to be dead. Thrown into a hostile environment of which she has learned nothing in her privileged life, Mariko has only her wits to rely on to survive. And her daring, which prompts her to disguise herself as a boy and then find and infiltrate the Black Clan, the gang she believes assaulted her convoy, in order to find out who was behind the attack meant to kill her.Here's a sample of the prose style:"Fear knifed through Mariko's center, its aim hot and true. She knew she could not afford to let a boy like Ōkami see even a hint of distress. She had to get free of these men. Had to gain the upper hand somehow. Seeking a way to distract herself -- any weakness in the strength surrounding her -- she studied Ōkami's fingers. They were long. Strong. His forearms were corded with muscle. His hold on the reins was loose. Easy. Which meant he was likely an accomplished rider. Any attempt to unseat him would be ill-advised.-- But perhaps Mariko could unseat him in other ways.-- "What kind of a name is Ōkami?" she began, her tone low and brusque.-- "You really don't learn, do you?"-- "You mocked my name, even though your parents named you after a wolf?"-- "They didn't."-- Despite all, her curiosity took hold once more. Mariko almost slid headfirst from her perch, but Ōkami took hold of her in a firm grip, catching her at the last possible moment.-- He yanked her toward him, chest to chest, grasping her tight by the collar of her threadbare kosode. Mariko expected to find fury in his eyes. Instead she was met with an impenetrable expression. Not the cold sort. But rather carefully veiled, though his eyes were remarkably clear. Like glass in a cavern at midnight.-- Mariko returned his stare, her heart thrashing wildly. "If you were me, you would have done the same thing." She could not prevent her voice from quavering on the last word.-- "No, I wouldn't." Ōkami's dark brows lowered. Shadowed his gaze. Something tugged at his lips. "I would have succeeded."Note: One important thing people need to know before picking up this book: this is not a stand-alone novel. While nothing in the title or the jacket description reveals it, this is very obviously intended to be the first book of a series as it ends on a number of cliff-hangers. And while Flame in the Mist falls into the category of YA fantasy, the reader should be advised that the actual fantasy elements are few and far between, at least in this volume. That said, however, the two that were present are key to the long-term plot.The only real problem I had with Flame in the Mist - the reason that I ended up giving it four stars instead of five - is that a great deal of the plot depends on the central character, Mariko, who is described as being keenly observant, somehow missing the equivalent of an 800-lb gorilla in the room for pretty much the entire book. I can't say more about what she misses without getting into spoiler territory however. But a great deal of what happens is dependent on her missing it and continuing to miss it when it should have been increasingly obvious from when she first manages to infiltrate the Black Clan. It caused me to have real trouble finding Mariko credible as the character she was described to be.Overall though, highly recommended for anyone who enjoys good YA fantasy and particularly for anyone who likes such stories in Asian settings and cultures.

I had a tremendous amount of expectations going into Renée Ahdieh’s Flame in the Mist, the first installment in her newest series. The Wrath and the Dawn is one of my favorite duologies and I am still struck by the beauty of Ahdieh’s writing. Flame in the Mist unfortunately did not meet my expectations. It’s a novel that I really wanted to like, but I never felt fully immersed in its world. I liked the concept of the story more than it’s execution. I liked the idea of a girl disguising herself as a boy in order to uncover the truth about the failed assassination attempt on her life, but Mariko herself felt like an incomplete character. We’re told countless times that she is odd and clever, but I never felt that the story actually showed these characteristics in action. She infiltrates the Black Clan, a group of thieves who she believes tried to kill her, but she never really has a concrete plan on how to find answers to her questions. I found myself really frustrated while reading this one because a lot of time is spent on character introspection. I wouldn’t mind this normally since inner conflict is a good sign of a character-driven novel which I love, but so many times these characters were reflecting on things I’d already been told and it felt very superfluous. The book has this really interesting magical element that is not explored enough and which I wanted so bad to learn more about. In the end, I never felt an emotional connection to any of the characters which really affected the way I received this book.

The hype surrounding Flame in the Mist mostly seemed to arise from the exciting idea that this book would be a retelling of one of the most beloved Disney films, Mulan. I, too, was really excited by that possibility and so I went in with some pretty high expectations. After reading, I have to say that while I really like this book, I can’t say that it’s perfect.Renée Ahdieh’s writing is just as descriptive and fluid as her prose in her The Wrath & the Dawn duology. She goes into great detail to bring her setting of feudal Japan to life, and it’s quite obvious that the author did a good bit of research to make her characters and the world they live in to be as authentic as possible. While some elements of the Mulan storyline are present (i.e. girl disguises herself as a boy), the story itself is fairly original and a story all its own.The characters were all very interesting, especially Mariko, whom I found to be very clever, independent, strong-willed, and extremely capable of taking care of herself. And luckily, Mariko wasn’t the only strong female character. There were other women who excelled in their own strengths, such as the geishas, the emperor’s mistress, and even the empress, and so I really appreciated the feminist aspect of the book.I also found Mariko’s and Kenshin’s sibling relationship to be strong and genuine despite the distance between them. And even though we weren’t given that many chapters from Kenshin’s POV, I felt that we were given enough to get to really know and appreciate his character.Okami had a mysteriousness about him I found appealing and I liked his standoffish yet playful nature. I enjoyed his odd friendship with Mariko while she was disguised as a boy, but I felt as if the romance between him and Mariko (once it she is revealed to be a girl) was a bit forced and not at all very well-developed. It kind of appeared for the sake of plot progression and it just didn’t feel natural enough.As for the plot itself, I felt the beginning was very engaging and started out with a bang, but the rest of the book sort of reaches a plateau in which nothing of great interest occurs. The action is severely reduced as the pacing slows down so that we’re better able to see Mariko engage with her environment. The ending, however, picks up the pace again, only to end far too quickly and somewhat abruptly.The magic element was a welcome addition to the story but the description of the magical acts were kind of vague. I didn’t really understand the rules of magic use in this world and by the end, I was kind of wondering if it was really necessary even though I knew it was. Hopefully the next book clears some things up.Mariko’s fierceness and determination are the best parts about the book and I love how detailed this world is. I would have liked to read more action scenes and I wish the romance and Mariko’s friendships among the Black Clan members were better established. Other than those few things, I thought this was a very enjoyable book.

Full disclosure here. I have met and hiked with Melissa. Having said that, I don't give high reviews for mediocrity to anyone. This hiking book is the perfect size for a backpack (not too big and very light, easy to turn pages), yet still includes a ton of useful information. The trails she's selected were a surprise as she included more than the usual suspects found in other hiking guides. Best part.... the maps! These are extremely detailed and clear. It's my pet peeve for hiking books. I saw her at work when going up St. Helens last year and she's a stickler for accuracy and detail. Her hard work shows and makes selecting an adventure so much easier for us hikers. Highly recommend.

This is a useful, accurate, well organized/presented book, that is also fun to read!The author remarked in her, refreshing introductory 1-pager - "hiking has become more than a walk in the woods for me". This evident passion for hiking, combined with detail oriented presentation and good penmanship, can be seen right throughout the book ! The photographs are very clear and useful.The accuracy and also right amount of information makes this book readily useful and easy to carry in my backpack, while on hikes.Very rare for an hiking book author, to connect with the reader. Usually such books are dry, but not this one.Highly recommend it !

This is a well researched, written and organized hiking book. Our Familly has tried several of the hikes now, all of them were great fun!

This book was more carefully crafted than the others I have purchased. The writing is meticulous yet succinct.The book's flow assists me to answers without having to make my own excel spreadsheets comparing my hiking options.1. Ask yourself "In what region of mountains around Seattle do I want to hike? I-90 corridor? Route 2? Mountain Loop highway? Olympics?"2. Thumb to that region as delineated by the darkened tabs at the outer edge of the book.3. Open up the summary chart and map that starts each regional chapter. Compare important stats like distance and elevation in a glance. Select candidate hikes.4. Read four page description on each candidate hike. Look at the pictures.5. Make a choice.

Fantastic! I love the organization of the book, the practical maps (including elevation markings!), and the clear need-to-know information at the start of each hike description (distance, duration, passes needed, management agency, etc.) The best hiking book I've seen for the area.

1. This book is a well written and detailed hiking book.2. Descriptions are so clear and written in a fun way that enhances the experience on the hike.3. Helps the hikers to identify plants on trails with contribution a naturalist, Stewart Wechler, as well as other experts from Washington State Animal Response Team, Washington Trails Association, Seattle Mountain Rescue to understand4. There are 12 categories of hikes in the beginning of the book to give you some great ideasfor hiking, such as; Best Day Trip, Best Strenuous Hikes. In this edition there are new Make it a Day Trip options, such as visiting Greenbank Farm on page 67 and taking the Crystal Mountain Gondola on page 336. These options incorporate travel options essentially when you have to drive a bit to see hikes, so that you can optimize your time and experience.

This book is well written and describes the 75 hikes in great detail. Everything you need to know about each hike is summarized in 3-5 pages, including topo maps and nice photos. The organization is great with 6 chapters covering 6 different regions around Seattle. Each chapter has a summary page showing the trail names, level, distance, time, and elevation. Most of the hikes show options for extending or shortening the hike. I browsed through other Seattle hiking books and this one is the best!

I thoroughly enjoyed Still I Rise, as I have Ms. Wagman-Geller’s other books. She writes about women who faced daunting odds, yet rose above their circumstances in inventive and unusual ways. Their stories of surmounting unique challenges inspire and comfort all of us in facing our own difficulties in life. This author writes with a philosopher’s voice, and a literary style, managing to portray her subjects with both dispassion and humor. Most of all, her humanity permeates the writing. You will not only enjoy but treasure this book.

I bought this book for a 13 year old girl and I’m glad I read some of it before I gave it to her. Some of the stories are quite alarming and more than a little inappropriate for young teen girls. Carrie Fishers story of her mother giving her a vibrator as a gift and Any Tans mother with the butcher knife and the sexual molestation, pills and booze of Patty Duke. All great women who overcame great horrors but not necessarily something I’d want my 13 year old to read about, just yet. I’d say this book would be for at least 16 and up. Some of the writing wasn’t that well written either, but that wasn’t a big deal.

Usually I struggle a bit with non-fiction books and think of reading them like eating vegetables i.e. good for you but not fun. However, I found this book extremely interesting and easy to read. I knew about some of the women in this book but the author managed to interest and surprise me with facts that I didn't know in every one of the stories. I definitely plan on recommending this novel to my book club as it is inspiring and prompts quite a bit of conversation.

This book by Marlene Wagman-Geller is inspiring for both men and women because all of us reach junctures in life that are dark and seemingly hopeless, that are pulverizing and paralyzing. Every woman she profiles has plummeted to some horrific nadir yet somehow reaches down to her most resilient self and keeps going. I can't even pick one of them who outshines all the rest--every one of these women is simply stunning in her resolve to overcome obstacles, in her sheer tenacity. They confront and handle everything from physical disability to harsh bullying to maddening marriages. If ever you feel you've been dealt an unfair hand in this life, read Still I Rise and you'll soon get over yourself!

This collection of short biographies about women who have overcome significant challenges to succeed is well researched, inspirational and filled with heart. Some of the women are famous, while others I had never heard of, but all should be honored for their accomplishments as they blazed trails to make the world a better place. I highly recommend it for high school and college history/women’s studies curriculum as well as for anyone wanting an fascinating enjoyable read. Next up I look forward to reading Wagman-Geller's Behind Every Great Man.

I am very disappointed in this book. I was looking for a book on strong women but the third chapter describes the wife of the man who started AA. The author seems to credit her with much his success and look upon her admiringly. However, she adds details that make me shake my head. This woman put up with his horrible behaviors, multiple addictions, including sex, saying he had a fifteen year affair and left 10% of his estate to his mistress. He threw a sewing machine at her and just seems to be a selfish, immoral human being. I would have put her in the category of being a strong woman had she chosen to take care of herself and leave rather than suffer in an unhappy marriage. There are 22 chapters left but I doubt I will be able to finish it after this chapter.

This books speaks to my soul. Personal adversity can be a catalyst to success! Great food for the soul and a must read for any woman feeling discouraged by life’s bumps. Roll with it girl!!
