Vigorous, engaging essays (many originally published in the New Republic) on the revolutionary impulses of 19th- and 20th- century writers, ``inspired practitioners of the American language,'' offering an explicit repudiation of the more arid contemporary forms of literary criticism. Delbanco (Humanities/Columbia Univ.; The Death of Satan, 1995, etc.) suggests in a brief preface that all the writers under consideration, from Herman Melville to Zora Neale Hurston, have in common the distinctly American idea that ``individual human beings can break free of the structures of thought into which they are born and that, by reimagining the world, they can change it.'' This democratic impulse to make things new seems clear with Thoreau (``to read him,'' Delbanco notes, ``is to feel wrenched away from the customary world and delivered into a place we fear as much as we need''), or Abraham Lincoln (the best example, Delbanco says, of a restorative ``universalizing impulse that cuts across the flimsy barriers by which people try to wall themselves off from those they deem unworthy of inclusion in their circle''), but less obvious in the work of Henry Adams or Stephen Crane. It is to Delbanco's credit that his highly original readings of these authors, as well as of Harriet Beecher Stowe, Theodore Dreiser, Kate Chopin, and Richard Wright, are all fresh and persuasive. Delbanco is also frankly dismayed at the kind of literary criticism that turns texts ``into excretions through which, while holding our noses, we search for traces of the maladies of our culture.'' He argues for a criticism that asserts that great prose, far from being an artifact of capitalist culture, is revolutionary, having the power both to change us and to give us pleasure. I tangled with Required Reading in its opening pages. I had thought it was something more like The Lifetime Reading Plan and was dismayed when I thought I had stepped in some hardcore lit crit theory which can be a killjoy. The good news is, that's not what I stepped in. While Required Reading is rather like a capstone seminar and requires a college freshman's acquaintance with literature to really swim far with it, it is as engaging as it is edifying. It reminded me why I chose to major in lit back in school and was never sorry. To others who belong to that great English major diaspora, who find themselves lost among the Grisham worshippers, you can go home again with Delbanco.

Delbanco, a Columbia University professor, shows the reader what is so great about American authors such as Herman Melville, Kate Chopin, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Stephen Crane and others. I'm not sure that the writing style (sentence complexity and vocabulary, etc)matches the intended audience for this arguement. Seems to me that if you pick up this book and can gather meaning from some its more obtuse sections, you already know why we need to continue to read the "classics".

I have been using this book for my music course in community college, and so far it had helped me a lot with learning how to play the piano. This book includes the proper hand playing position, how to read sheet music, and more. As you progress thru the book you will be able to play more and more difficult pieces. It's best to slowly progress thru this book and practice each new lesson/segment until you have grasped it well.

So far so good! As an adult beginner in their 30's, I was afraid to attempt to learn to play at my age, but this book is great. It is super intuitive and easy to follow. The lessons just make sense. This book definitely makes piano fun and manageable to learn at any age.

I used this for the Piano Class at university. Once you get the basics, you can continue to use it to teach yourself how to play piano. This gets you started and onto 1st grade. Mine was so well used that it fell apart.

I bought book several weeks ago and thought it would be good to have audio cd also. Problem is, these audio cd do not coincide with lessons in book and I will return. I was very disappointed.

This is a good book for beginners who are in the class. I wouldn't recommend buying this book if you're trying to teach yourself. The book does not give detailed enough directions for beginner. I often have to ask my teacher what it's asking me to do. Good price! It's the cheapest book I bought for school this semester.

This was definitely delivered as expected.

Came in quickly as designed and was in good order. This is a book for a class I am taking.

My child has only had one lesson with her group but I am amazed at what she is already playing here at home! No regrets!

If you're an F1 snob, this is not for you. It contains one page technical, historical and driver tidbits. It doesn't go into great depth, but you'll learn a few things and enjoy it this light read.

Brother loved it for his collection.

I cool book to have if you're a big F1 fan and a nice coffee table piece; easy read, nice illustrations, some quality insight. However, I don't think it is the "go-to" material for upcoming F1 fans that it was intended to be.

Much like the other books in the Speed Read series, F1 is split into seven sections (chapters) and filled with beautiful matte illustrations and relevant sidebars in each subsection. Also each section also ends in that lovely glossary- which I love even more in the F1 book than I did in the car design book because sometimes racing terminology in F1 is different than I am use to and it helps this NASCAR and NHRA lover figure out what is being discussed. The sections F1 is broken up in order are: Technology, Drivers, Rivalries, Racing Circuits, Flag To Finish, Staying Alive, and Taking Care Of Business. As someone who has watched F1 on multiple occasions or but not closely enough to know all the intricacies this particular form of motorsport, I found this book refreshing as a crash course in the particulars of F1 and what makes it unique in the motorsports world. Much like Car Design, F1 is also written in a clear, easy to read manner. My favorite section in this book was Rivalries, which lists a several of the sports stand-out rivalries. Especially with some of the more historic rivalries, while I likely recognized the name of at least one of the drivers I was able to read through the particulars of what makes that specific rivalry contentious. My second favorite section was the Staying Alive section as it detailed safety and how it has evolved with F1 through the years. I loved this book (and this series) and if you are even just slightly interested in F1 racing, I think you will like this book too as it approaches the series from a NOVICE's approach.

Carol Kochhar-Bryant is a professor of special education at the George Washington University. For 21 years she has developed and directed advanced graduate and doctoral leadership preparation programs related to secondary and transition services for youth with disabilities. She teaches courses in special education, legal issues and public policy, systemic change and leadership, and interdisciplinary planning and development. She currently consults with public school districts, state departments of education, and federal agencies, and has collaborated in international special education and transition policy research with the World Bank and the Office of Economic Cooperation and Development. She has conducted evaluations of state systemic reform initiatives, national technical assistance centers, transition services in correctional systems, and a variety of community-based agencies. Kochhar-Bryant is a former teacher of individuals with intellectual disabilities, a residential program director, case management program director, and evaluator. She is widely published in the areas of disability policy, leadership development, interagency service coordination, career-vocational programming, and secondary-to-postsecondary transition for special learners. Explaining the potential options legally available to people with disabilities after high school, this book has several good points.Particularly for students enrolled in special education programs all throughout public school education, graduation from high school potentially becomes a confusing time.Will the same services be available? Who will provide them? Special education services eligibility does not exist when entering college.But the rules which DO cover college are an different set. As opposed to covering every type of every disability, they merely provide reasonable accommodation for 'qualified students'. Because a college does not have to accept every student within a community, it does not have to accomodate every student who happens to have a disability.For those students whose parents were 'protecting' them from the larger world, the mandatory self-advocacy required in college (among other environments) might initially feel confusing--or even scary.But self-identification as a person with a disability is REQUIRED to obtain 'reasonable accommodation' regardless of where somebody is accepted and then enrolls. Particularly in that environment, a parent cannot 'advocate' irrespective of how 'good' their intentions previously were or are.The 'college' chapters of this book are particularly well-written because in addition to stressing the self-advocacy, they correctly state that students are able to apply to and then enroll at any college where they get accepted. Disability services do not get provided as a 'favor' to any student on any campus, they are federally-required. Obtaining these disability services requires student proactivity from the begining of campus enrollment.Self-advocacy is also required when paying visits to your local rehabilitation agency for the services which they can provide. These agencies assist with job training for college students but also work with people whose transition plans do not and will not include college. Here, an advocate is permitted to provide help--but the agencies tend to place emphasis on the 'client' to the greatest extent possible.An especially helpful feature of this text has 'voices' of people undergoing the transition themselves speaking out about these experiences.While the book is written as a 'text' for educators/potential educators, the approach also helps in a guide which should be made available for students themselves.I feel that the authors should have actually made this guide directed at transitioning/soon-to-be transitioning students. They are, despite the law--being virtually 'dumped' after high school graduation in too many instances. Such a resource would prove invaluable in dramatically reducing the post-graduation confusion, and ultimately answering their own original thesis.

We absolutely love Step Into Reading books. Short, but fun stories to help a young reader gain confidence. Level One is geared towards Preschool and Kindergarten, but I purchased this for a three year old. He uses the pictures to tell his own story and gain confidence in his reading. It is one way to have children learn how to use pictures as clues. Fun and silly story. Expand on it and have your children make up more rhyming words! It all builds literacy! Excellent price point!

My toddler and I enjoy this book very much. He's interested in the Cat in the Hat character but honestly, reading the originally Cat in the Hatbooks is pretty daunting in this childhood stage. The book definitely captures the language and the antics of the Cat without leaving you tongue-twisted and breathless after being asked to read the same book 2 or 3 times in a row. Definitely recommended for early readers and younger children.

Great book for beginner readers. Many monosyllabic words and rhymes with consonant-vowel-consonant pattern which builds confidence in child's reading ability. I would compare it to Dr. Seuss' Hop on Pop but a much shorter book.

It teaches how neatness and clean up is important and how much fun it is to eat the finished dish. Such a cute book! The grand daughter will love this one! Bonnie Worth is the author and it is illustrated by Christopher Moroney.

We’re in the process of teaching sight words. This book is great and my 3yr old loves it (who doesn’t love the cat in the hat). If your little one is starting to read, these books are a good buy. The stories are good and the Q&A at the end helps with recollection.

One of the best first reader books I've found so far. Beautiful illustrations just like Dr Seuss books and movie. My granddaughters loved being able to read something so familiar to them. The feeling of success with reading something that they had been seeing and hearing all their lives was very gratifying to this Grandma! They had fun creating more rhyming words also---which they learned to spell quickly too!

This book is perfect for my daughter. It has a lot of CVC words (consonant, vowel, consonant) words, as well as beginning sight and tricky words. Initially, I thought that it would be a cookbook, or at least include a recipe, but I am still very happy with the book.
