As a citizen-learner envisioning, advocating and working for a more humane and democratic society, one grounded in love and respect for humanity, I found How We Get Free deep, rich and absorbing. Both the Combahee River Collective and Keeyanga-Yahmahtta Taylor inspire this reader and offer much to ponder about the unfolding struggle. I especially like how this is a documentary work that both reminds us of lessons learned and other lessons missed in the past and asks us to do something crucial with our history: learn from it. I could go on.But I want to talk about How We Get Free from a teacher's standpoint. I assigned it this semester in my university seminar, "Writing American Politics." I almost assigned it to my other seminar, "Documenting Black Experiences," where it would fit nicely, but I needed it to balance other readings (Robert Penn Warren, All the King's Men, Dan T. Carter, Politics of Rage: George Wallace and the Transformation of American Politics) in "Writing American Politics," and I did not want the reading lists to overlap too much. How We Got Free is an excellent teaching book. First, it is short and a brisk, absorbing, serious read. Beyond that, Taylor generously offers us her deep engagement--and an almost irresistible opportunity to make undertake our own plunge--with this Black feminist manifesto born of the late 1960s and early 1970s, which also speaks to many of our current predicaments. Her transcribed and edited interviews introduce us to particularly thoughtful voices from founders of the Combahee River Collective and Black Lives Matter. The willingness of these movements to confront not only white supremacy but homophobic and heteronormative politics is inspiring and instructive. My students enjoying this vista on an earlier generation of Black women's lives and struggles and the thoughtful way that Taylor as both editor and essayist connects that generation with their own generation. Any professor paying attention in the classroom knows that students want to be able to connect historical events to their own generation's wrestling with the world around them. This really worked for my students of all hues, cultures, world views and gender expressions, producing excellent discussions that continued to resonate as we went forward into other conversations.

I am a straight white male, so my views on this book may be biased, however, I found How We Get Free to be a powerful, thoughtful and thought-provoking book on Black Feminism. The book brought back the heady days in the '70s , when almost anything seemed possible, both positive and negative. Having lived through those years I was inevitably confronted by the challenges Feminism posed for men, however, I had no idea that such a thing as Black Feminism existed, though I was quite familiar with Black culture.Most of the book consists of interviews with 3 founders of the Combahee River Collective (and authors of its Statement). Taylor is very good at drawing out her subjects, and letting them speak for an extended period before moving on to another question. She is also good at allowing them to speak in their own voices, without trying to "clean up" some of their stop-and-go syntax or odd word choices. I found this a little disconcerting at first, but it added an interesting dimension to the book.The subjects of her interviews were all very blunt and occasionally sarcastic in their speech. It gradually became clear to me that this was due to both the nature of the topic, and to the comfort they felt talking with Keeanga Taylor. It is clear the three women who were members of the Collective were deeply focused on an economic as well as social analysis of the role and position of Black women in America, and their interviews formed the backbone of the book, for me. Another interesting and revealing feature was its strong critique of the White feminist movement, and why the CRC broke away from that movement. Equally revealing was How We Got Free's commentary on the powerful tension between Black men and Black women, especially Black Feminists.The CRC's Statement came early in the book, and for this reason, I found the Statement difficult to follow, and even more difficult to grasp its importance. After reading the rest of the book, I re-read the Statement, and I recommend this for everyone who is not familiar with the Combahee River Collective and its work.I found this an inspiring book, one from which I learned a great deal. It is worth reading by anyone interested in the anti-racism and anti-sexism movements in the United States.

Brilliant and timely in both its new analysis and the rescuing of a pivotal document. A must read for anyone who wants to understand the world we’re in now and especially for those looking to change it.

This book includes the original statement put out by radical, socialist Black feminists in the early 1970’s. If one wonders about the origins of the terms “intersectionality” & “identity politics,” check this out. It includes recent interviews with all the major players - and brings it full circle with an interview with one of the emerging Black feminists Alicia Garza.

A small read, but very powerful. It's basically just a collection of interviews from black feminists and the creators of the combahee river collective with an interview of the co-creator of #BLM and I recommend it to everyone. It's very informative

I would recommend this book to other lawyers or law students for three reasons: (1) this book outlines, in step format, what is required of a solid brief to persuade the court; (2) the book does a great job of providing real-world examples from briefs submitted by everyone from C.J. John Roberts and J. RBG to Joe Jamail to help illustrate his points; and (3) the writing is really easy to read and quick to get through.Moving onto my first point, the book outlines the components of a well-structured brief from beginning to end. The front and back covers contain an "outline" not dissimilar to a table of contents, and that outline effectively gives you a checklist to go through while writing your brief or motion. If you are stuck on a particular section like the introduction or the statement of facts, you can easily hop into the table of contents and just jump to the relevant section.Onto my second point, as you are reading through each chapter in the book, the author will supply excerpts from actual briefs while bolding and emphasizing the concepts that particular section is teaching you so that you may see the lesson in action. He then expands on those points immediately following the excerpt and goes on to explain why he emphasized certain words or phrases. This makes following along very easy, even if the actual subject matter of the brief goes over your head (I admire IP lawyers more now than I did before I read this book). Furthermore, the brief excerpts are from heavy hitters who definitely know their way around Microsoft Word, so the examples you're being taught with are written by some of the best advocates in the country. The author even gives grammatical lessons or suggestions to help get a point across more clearly which is really nice because it humanizes the big shot advocates. I am happy to know that even the Chief Justice of the SCOTUS sometimes makes grammatical errors in his writing too.Lastly, the book is so well written that it's just really easy to get through. I got through a hundred pages or so within the first day, and should be finishing the book in a couple of days.All in all, I would suggest this book to anyone who wants to improve their legal writing. The first way to win in court is through your brief, and the second way is through oral arguments. If an attorney can persuade the court before they even appear in front of the judge, half the battle has already been won. Five out of five stars.

One of the most influential books I've read in quite some time. As a young lawyer, writing is becoming increasingly important to me. This is my new bible on legal writing. Guberman's ability to identify great and immediately useful writing tips, and to show examples of them applied correctly, is transformational. I've given this book to several colleagues. I can't recommend it strongly enough.

This is the second edition of Guberman’s book. He has also written a companion book called ‘Point Taken’, which is about writing good judgments. The basic points about good writing overlap in the two books. The difference, which justifies the two different books, is that persuasion is more important in a lawyer’s writing than a judge’s judgment for several reasons. The main one being that the lawyer is concerned mainly with one point of view. The judge has to balance both views. Rhetoric sounds acceptable and often useful in a lawyer’s argument, but less so in a judgment.Guberman not only teaches good writing styles, but also gives useful tips on citations and footnotes in the lawyer’s submissions (or briefs). If all lawyers read and practise what this book advises, archaic and often dull and unintelligible legal writing will disappear.

Guberman does an excellent job of explaining the methodology and thought process behind legal writing. His simplification of such a foreign style of literature it impeccable and makes it accessible for everyone. The writing is not monotonous and maintains interest in the reader. As someone who is preparing to go to law school, I was intimidated by the form of writing that lawyers utilize. Guberman, however, gives the reader confidence. Overall, an amazing read!

Using actual excerpts from motions and appeals, the author not only provides examples of excellent writing, but also explains why the techniques work. The first example, taken from a brief written by Chief Justice John Roberts while he worked as a government lawyer, is brilliant. Justice Roberts compares the selection of technology to the selection criteria used to select a vehicle by drivers in different states to make the point that differing environmental conditions will likely call for different features in car selection. Not every driver will have the same needs. A Floridian might need a convertible; whereas, a Minnesotan would select 4-wheel drive. This drives home the point that technology selection will go the same way. It shows how to take a dry topic and bring it to life. I like how the author has carefully thought about the entire writing process from beginning till end and has addressed each stage of the process. Thus, if you find yourself in need of inspiration anywhere in the writing process from developing the theme to stating the conclusion, an example is available in this book to help get your creative juices going again. Well done.

I'm an engineer and have done a lot of writing to sell my proposals and ideas. Many of us with technical backgrounds have great ideas but have trouble selling them simply because our writing is often not very persuasive. And if you can't be persuasive your ideas aren't worth anything. I've taken various technical writing seminars but this book is hands down the best tool I've come across for improving my writing. This book offers lots of help, and showed me how to write about the facts using more compelling and varied sentences. It's very practical, easy to read and offers great ideas for getting your point across. Unlike many "how to write" books, this one is enjoyable to read and educational, with a lot of stories about well-known legal disputes. It will definitely make you a better writer and enable you to sell your ideas more effectively.

The novel begins with Simcox on his deathbed, and the remainder is a series of flashbacks featuring the Simcox family, their friends, and Leslie Titmuss, a singleminded manipulator who climbs from poor boy to cabinet minister. The "mystery" of the novel is why Simcox, in his will, leaves all he owns to Titmuss. After much tediously contrived suspense, we learn that Titmuss is Simcox's illegitimate son. The writing is witty and the wordplay entertaining, but Mortimer has overextended a flimsy plot. Glenn O. This novel is quite a lark in the reading of it. The dialogue, for which Mortimer has an uncanny ear, sparkles with wit, and the characters all come across as both believably quotidian and quirky. Mortimer also manages to deftly sketch the changes in English society between the war years and 1985 into the background of all these intertwined goings-on. What fun!Oh yes, there's also the mystery of the will of Simeon Simcox, late pacifist, socialist vicar which bequeaths all to weaselly Conservative Cabinet MP Leslie Titmuss. The narrative is a bit rum on this point in that the said Simeon Simcox is actually alive throughout most of the novel as the story backtracks through time or rather hopscotches around it - more often than not from paragraph to paragraph, with no clear demarcation given - which takes a bit of getting used to, whilst also keeping the reader on his/her toes.A very lively, satisfactory read indeed, except that one is still left pondering why exactly the Bertrand Russell reading, seemingly atheistical Simcox became a vicar in the first place. Oh well, it's just as well to have something on which to chew after one turns the last pages.Mortimer is particularly deft in employing literary quotations to summarise entire sections of the book. The Kierkegaard quote summarising Part Three might well be employed to give the prospective reader an idea of the entire book's underlying theme and motif:"Life must be lived forwards, but it can only be understood backwards."

I loved reading about the various characters in this story and their reaction to events and situations which were imposed on them. Brilliant and incisive writing which we have come to expect from John Mortimer.

Great book, had read the Rumpole series and just recently discovered Titmus series. John Mortimer is a great story teller and his characters are "larger than life" I hope others will enjoy reading his novels.

John Mortimer is brilliant, and there can be no two ways about that. He is a cynic and he is a wit, and talented enough for that to put him almost in the company of Swift. He was also a lawyer, there is usually a legal thread even in his non-Rumpole novels, and there is one here, the mysterious case of a clergyman's will which seems to have left his entire fortune to a very unexpected and unwelcome beneficiary.I found the plot-line in this novel very good indeed. The main mystery is cleared up in a very unexpected way, all hints and suggestions really lead somewhere, and while I suppose I would have to call it contrived, it is clever enough to be convincing in its own way. It is clever in the sense of being complex, but also in the way that Mortimer keeps switching the time-focus between different eras. He takes us from the start of Attlee's Labour government in 1945 all the way to the reign of Margaret in the 80's. The story of the will would not by itself have required a 40-year elapse. What requires that is the introduction of Leslie Titmuss, depicted starting with his modest boyhood and ending, in this book, with his fictional presence in Thatcher's cabinet. It needs no great legal genius to perceive that he is going to be good for a few more books, and so, of course, it has turned out.So there is a political angle too, and if you know your author you will have expected that. He was one kind of leftist, and a kind that I greatly like. He had a privileged background, and he was `anti' just by nature. He was a rationalist and he was a libertarian. He found the toffs with origins similar to his own to be absurd and repulsive, but he was no Orwell, no wholesale convert to some other side. The colonel's lady and Judy O'Grady are sisters under the skin, after all. It's a human skin, and it's humanity in general that is prone to being absurd.The characterisation is largely drawn from a political slant, therefore. Mortimer is not pushing any party-political programme all the same. Just describe some Young Conservatives, I suppose, and further comment would be superfluous. However the reverend himself, whose strange-seeming will forms the core of the narrative, is depicted as a self-caricaturing lefty, while Mortimer is conspicuously restrained in anything that might be construed as hostility to Titmuss, whose views must have been in many respects antithetical to his own. Malcolm Muggeridge, in his latter days as a born-again Christian and reactionary, had an excellent description for a whole tranche of C of E clergymen of this period, with their `feeble-minded confusion of the Christian faith with better housing, shorter hours of work, the United Nations and opposition to apartheid.' These are the polar examples. The others - I found them brilliantly drawn and developed altogether.However in Mortimer there is always a good deal of social commentary, with minor characters put there for the overall picture and not for themselves. In many ways this is the best thing in the book, and it comes mainly at the beginning. You can't tell me that the schoolmates of Fred and Henry at their fictitious public school in East Anglia are not drawn from life. Mortimer attended Harrow School (as did Churchill), and they used to tell them there that the wind from the Urals hit Harrow-on-the-Hill without encountering any intermediate obstruction. Mortimer borrows this piece of lore for his school here in the book, so I infer that the incidental personae who come and go in the first chapter or two are real, with only the names changed to protect the questionably innocent. In particular there was apparently one boy who had a premature 5-o'clock shadow and was a great masturbator. He features in just a sentence or two, is never heard of again, and one is left wondering whether his onanistic eminence was a matter of a record level of activity, or whether he needed both hands simultaneously for the job, or exactly what it was. Somebody still alive might still remember.The style of writing is of course delightful, but I caught Mortimer recycling a sentence that I had heard him use on television at least once, to the effect that there is no pleasure worth denying oneself for the sake of a few years in a sunset home in Weston-super-Mare. Poor old Weston-super-Mare. It is 60 years since I was there last, but having been warned off in this way I am electing to manage my later years by attending a gymnasium and eating and drinking less. Advancing age makes the latter pleasures less attractive anyway, to me at least. The book also features an elderly doctor who is largely there for the purpose of saying witty things, rather like Lord whatsisname in A Picture of Dorian Gray. This is entirely welcome. The doctor belongs properly in the narrative, and I would only utter a mild remonstrance for the pageful of his bons mots that is only there because Mortimer could not fit them into the story.Behind the upper-middle-class English flippancy there is also a darker side to all this, and mentioning the doctor above reminds me of that. To me, it is all a potent brew, and I recommend the book thoroughly. Sir John Mortimer left our society only recently, but not before he had used at least one of his books to sound a coded but powerful warning of the threats to liberty that were being enacted by the over-plausible and endlessly self-justifying Tony Blair. The libertarian mentality runs through Mortimer's output, the threats to liberty depend on the eternal vigilance that is trumpeted so often by some of the people who threaten liberty most and are trying to hijack the vocabulary to their own political cause. Mortimer is good for our mental health.

This book was better on the kindle. This book could have been better edited by a professional editor. Other than tha the information was solid, just jumbled together. I can only recommened getting this book only if you are a GOJU Ryu practitioner who nows what they are reading. It is not newbie frendly.

when the writer goes into kata there should be some better instruction and pictures perhaps we will see some on specific kata covered in this book katas of this style have always been interesting to myself
