A lovely and enlightening book about the most beautiful of all molluscs, although some may think the snails and oysters more beautiful. It is a useful book because, as the authors explain, modern biotechnology are looking into this group to solve our problems since cephalopods (as this group are known) ‘have attributes that society and industry would like to incorporate into modern devices’ – such as the octopus inspired flexible robotic arm.Octopuses have eight arms, squids have a tubular shape but not naturally buoyant, and cuttlefish are like squids but have a ‘cuttlebone’ which they use to pump air in order to stay buoyant. They all have large brains and the octopus is regarded as an intelligent creature. There is a chapter on how intelligence is evaluated in these animals. The account of the Common European Cuttlefish as a wily predator is fascinating.This book traces the 500 million years of evolution of these cephalopods, and the effect of climate change on their continued evolution. The descriptions of the various species and types of these lovely sea creatures are accompanied by excellent photographs of the highest quality.Although this is a larger book than usual, it is not unwieldy, nor is it heavy. The chapter on world fisheries and consumption of these animals (some are poisonous but others are delicious) is educational and after reading and understanding them, we might change our dietary preferences.

If only I had had books with photos like these when I was a kid back in the dim past of the early 20th century..... instead of tiny black and white photos and line drawings in a 1944 encyclopedia. Ah, well, better late than never. You will be entranced by this book. Yep, the anatomy and physiology descriptions are somewhat above the ordinary layman, but you still be mesmerized by the intelligence and beauty of these cephalopods, part of the wondrous natural world that I just ache to be able to preserve against degradation and exploitation.

This is the standard food micro book for most classes, and the information in it is good, but it is poorly organized with no effort to make it more readable or visually appealing.

This is the book our professor recommended..... It does not provide much details in many aspects but it is good for helping me understand a lot general information in this filed. The condition of the book is very good.

It is a well written and easy to understand book. However, font is very small and hard to read sometimes. If you are interested in water microbiology, this book doesn't really cover the subject. But it is a very good source of reference when it comes to general understanding of food science.

Gathering Blue, the second in the Giver quartet by Lois Lowry, follows the story of Kira, an orphaned girl. In a world where physical differences are shunned and the bearers cast out, Kira finds herself alone and vulnerable when her mother suddenly dies. As her only protector, Kira’s mother valiantly fought for the disabled girl’s right to exist in such a harsh community. Without her, Kira has become a target of certain villagers looking to claim the land where her home once sat, even if it means expelling her from the community. After being called into a hearing with the Council of Guardians to determine her fate, Kira is pleased to learn that her life will be spared due to her special talent. Under the watchful eyes of the Guardians, Kira undertakes the daunting task set before her by the Elders, and in doing so discovers things about herself and her community that she never would have imagined possible.While this is the second book in the Giver quartet, I find if only fair to note that there aren’t any characters from the original novel in this book. Set in the same dystopian future Earth, Kira’s village is less advanced and the residents have life harsher. Where the Giver had an almost futuristic feel to it, through their advancements and gadgets, Gathering Blue has a very medieval feel, where all but the most privileged of residents reside in clay and thatch “cotts” with little to no food. I ended up reading this as part of a Summer reading challenge with my 10-year-old and I honestly can say that I don’t think I ever would have read it otherwise. But now that I have read it, I want to read the remaining two books to see where this all goes. With both Gathering Blue and The Giver, Lois Lowry has created a fictional dystopia that has a hint of real life and modern prejudices and thoughts woven in. No, modern day America does not cast out the infirm, disabled or elderly; but we do have a way of treating them as less of a person unless they have something that we want or a knowledge that we can use. Gathering Blue brings that issue to the forefront in such a way that will cause the reader to think about Kira’s situation and hopefully be kinder to those around them.

This one is probably took me the longest to read out of all 4 of the books. If you agree, just keep reading - it gets so much better! Once I got toward the end, I flew through it and then flew through the next two books.Gathering Blue is not seemingly related to The Giver (or so we think); it takes place in the same universe, but a totally different type of community - almost an exact opposite of Jonas's community in The Giver. Kira's village is more primal; if you can't contribute and fend for yourself, you're useless. Kira, who suddenly finds herself parentless and alone in this hostile world, must find a way to prove herself to her community, despite being crippled. Her only friend in the world is a kind little boy, Matty, and his canine companion, Branch. Kira, with no parents to defend her place in the village, must face the judgement of the council. It is the council that decides Kira's fate - and to her surprise, they motion for her to remain in the society, and contribute the same way as her mother, through sewing and embroidery. It is through exercising her skills that Kira discovers her strange powers that she cannot explain, and uncovering dark secrets held by the village.

After reading The Giver and loving it I went to see the movie, which was such a powerful film!!! I was definitely riding a high from this book and was eager to continue the series. Before I started reading The Gathering Blue I learned that it did not however, follow Jonas, nor was it based on his community that he lived in. So, I approached this story, saddened, but with the knowledge and understanding that it was to be a completely different story. There were some things that I did like about The Gathering Blue, but overall I thought the story was very slow, and it took a long time for things to happen, or events to unfold in this story v.s. The Giver.I did like that this story took place I guess you would say in the same "world" as The Giver, but in a different community with its own set of unique rules.For those of you wondering if you should read The Gathering Blue to continue the series my answer is still yes, while this book is harder to get through, I can see where certain characters will play an important role in the books to come. I have already started book three in the series , The Messenger, and some of the secondary characters from The Gathering Blue are now Main characters in The Messenger. I am not far in the book right now, but I can confirm that Jonas and Gabe both make an appearance.

I found the writing in this novel not nearly as compelling as "The Giver." There is exactly one character who is delineated well, and that is Matt. Also, frankly, his dog.In "The Giver," I could see, hear, and imagine the characters. In this book, I could not. I have no idea what Kari looks like, besides her crippled leg. Almost none of the characters have names, beyond being called the butcher, the weavers, the tykes, the people who live there in this unspecified community where everyone is cruel.We see no descriptions whatsoever of Kari's supposedly magical threading. We just get endless lessons on plant dyes. There is some description of Thomas's carving, and a little bit of Jo's singing. However, there is not enough explanation to be compelling and make you wonder why these particular children are so magical, and craved and imprisoned by the evil portions of the elite community.I thought I paid too much for this ultimately unsatisfying book. I really want to see more about Jonas, whose gift was more fully and joyfully described. I will look for subsequent books at my library, and buy them if they prove to be better than this last one.

My 7 and 9 year olds both love these books! They are easy quick reads For the 9 year old but still have enough content to keep her interest. We love them because they are educational too! Learning more about the people behind the things!

My son loves these books. The information is written at the level he needs to be engaged and to learn. Sally Ride is a wonderful inspiration and these books give you the opportunity to get to know the person beyond what they’re famous for - this set gives you a feeling for what the person’s whole life was like.

Too short but good enough for my 9-year-old.

kids loved reading this! Was for a school assignment for my 4th grade, my 3rd grader read and loved as well. Will be getting more of the series.

I purchased this book used in hopes of finding ideas to improve my chronic verbose andnlumbar spine pain. The author does describe some yoga poses that are helpful and discusses the dress response and it’s contribution to muscle pain and tension, but this is old information. There is some dates, and incorrect information - he states that far has no use in the body and that 20% or less of the diet should be from fat (untrue, fat is needed for hair, skin, and brain function!) and recommends full sit ups to build abdominal strength- my physical therapist would cringe if she read this. Full sit ups strain the back and are not safe for someone with DJD like myself - or really, for anyone.

I have been suffering with a herniated L3/L4 disc and compressed nerve for nearly 1 /12 years. [a worked related injury] I have been determined to help myself and meet my doctor halfway. I have always been physically active, yet knew I could do more. My pain specialist is a wonderfully skilled physician but we must, as Dr. Brownstein teaches, help ourselves. His conservative approach to healing is compelling and convincing, since he is not only a physician but has lived through back injuries, surgeries, pain and related sorrow. His intro is touching and inspiring. His narrative voice is seductive. The reader, immediately, is drawn into his story and journey through pain. I have been practicing his prescribed exercises, diet and meditation. Plan to begin Yoga, since I have an o.k. from my doctor. This is a "must" read, non-fiction work, that every back injury/pain sufferer should read. Once immersed, you will find yourself, as I have been, reading, each night and re-reading to learn. I highly recommend to anyone who has the desire to heal both spiritually and physically and maintain a healthy body and soul. I am feeling the positive effects already!

I have dealt with severe, chronic low back pain from degenerative disk disease for the past three years. Wanting to find a natural solution if possible, I tried chiropractors, physical therapy, massage, Pilates, even acupuncture. When that didn't work, I began a course of trigger point and facet joint injections that didn't help. Then I tried spinal epidurals, eventually having six of them over the course of a year. They offered some relief, but not for very long. The only things that eased the pain at all were strong prescription pain medications, and alcohol. Eventually they stopped working in safe amounts, and my memory and personality were being affected, so I scheduled surgery to have three of my vertebrae fused together. I was told I would be out of work for at least six months, if I could return at all. I'm a 55 year old man who is used to hiking, kayaking, skiing and scuba diving with my wife and three kids. My family was getting used to doing things without me because even the weight of carrying a book hurt my back so much. This surgery meant I would probably never be able to do any of that again, and would certainly have to have at least one more surgery to fuse more vertebrae in a few years. Then someone recommended this book. I was hugely skeptical, but anything was better than the surgery. I identified with everything Dr. Brownstein said in the beginning of the book, and he explained some things the doctors I consulted had not been able to explain. I vowed to stick with it for a month, just in case it worked, but I had very low expectations. There were times when I got down on the floor to do the exercises and didn't think I would be able to get up again without help. Within three weeks, however, almost all the pain was gone, and it is still improving. I have been given my life back. My family can't believe the improvement, and now makes sure I do the exercises on a daily basis. I have already given the book to three people who saw the incredible improvement in my back. If you are experiencing the same kind of back pain I was, you have nothing to lose, and everything to gain. You can get your health and your life back, like I did.

I've read several books on back pain and this has been the best by far. Brownstein takes a truly holistic approach to dealing with back issues. He stresses the need for basic rehabilitation exercises (mainly stretches) but also stresses the need for "mind" issues, such as relaxation techniques. It's a wonderful blend of approaches, and it really struck a chord with me. Best of all, it does work! I've made very good progress in dealing with sciatica pain, and have a far more positive outlook than before.The writing is clear and direct. The book begins with the basics of spinal structure, muscle groups and how everything works together. Nothing groundbreaking here, but nicely structured. Enough detail to get the key points across without burying the reader with too much detail and anatomy lessons.The section on stretching is excellent and alone worth the cost of the book. Again, nothing novel or outlandish - just basic stretching routines (several of which I was familiar with from my physical therapist, but quite a few new ones as well). The book brings value to the process by explaining each stretch clearly (both what to do and not to do) and proving illustrations. The combination of text and illustrations made it much easier for me to follow than other books that stressed one format over another.There's much more to the book, including relaxation exercises, tips on a proper diet, maintaining a healthy back, and a wonderful (but brief) chapter on what to do in a back emergency. If you have back pain, this is absolutely worth reading and trying.
