Beside Bruce Schneier books, this is the second software security book that I am reading. The first being Building Secure Software: How to Avoid Security Problems the Right Way and I have prefered this one because it provides more concrete examples. The book consists of over 20 chapters covering different security areas. As a software developer, some chapters appeared less relevent and less interesting to me and I guess that it is because these chapters are geared principally toward testers. However, at least 2 chapters should be extremely interesting and valuable to developers like myself. It is the chapters that demonstrate with step by step tutorials how a hacker would do to exploit buffer overflow and format string problems. I was already familiar with buffer overflows and I had read a similar chapter about them in Building Secure Software: How to Avoid Security Problems the Right Way but the format string exploits were new to me. As expected since the book is published by Microsoft Press, the book has a strong bias torward Microsoft products (ie.: .NET and ActiveX controls security) but the presented topics are general enough to make this book very valuable even for users of other OSes and/or development tools.

This is a very impressive book on finding security issues in software, especially because it really can serve as a book for almost all audiences. If you are not an expert, you can still gain a good understanding of what sorts of issues you need to be considering when writing secure software. At this level, it is valuable to know what a buffer overflow, format string attack or SQL injection are, for example, and how to prevent them. If you are interested in diving further into the details, this book will take you as far down as you are prepared for, including an exploration of buffer overflows at the machine register level. This is a great book to read through once, and then keep as a reference for when you need to review something you've covered, in greater detail.

If you are looking for a great book to start / or to enhance your library on security this is the book. I was looking for a book that brought depth to the subject but didn't assume that I was an expert already. When I browsed this one in the bookstore, I was impressed that it started off with how you should think about testing your application and what the difference is when it comes to security testing. Funny thing now is that when ever I encounter a situation I think about how vulnerable. Believe me, thats pretty scary.The authors proceeded to give a logical path for working toward looking at all the areas where an application might be open to an attack. The authors uses thread models to help flush out the design of an application and explains why they are valuable and how to use them. They then get into looking at entry points and point out areas where you might not realize that you have one. They continue with a discussion on how a malicious client and server could be use to comprise your security. Next they cover ways that someone could fool the user into giving up information such as with spoofing and information disclosure, They then get into discussions about techniques such as buffer overflows, stack and heap manipulation, format string attack and script attacks including XML issues. Along with this you'll find information on permissions, areas for denial of services as well as ActiveX attacks. Finally, you find a very good checklist for doing a systematic approach to checking your security. The topics are well written and provide plenty of examples as well as thoughts about how to deal with the topic.Even if you don't read every chapter there is plenty of information for any particular area that you are interested in. It makes a great book to have on your shelve when you need to brush up or learn about a particular topic.After reading the book, I contacted one of the authors and asked him to present to my team. Yes, I work at the same company but that didn't influence my decision to buy the book especially since it was my own money going to purchase the book. He consented to giving us a presentation and his talk has inspired my entire team to ask for a copy of his book. Being that I had already read about half of it, I knew what he was talking about so it reinforced my opinion of the book. I would say that is a pretty good indication of how good the book is when an entire team asked for a copy.You won't be sorry if you purchase this book.

This book addresses what I consider to be a much higher priority for the Test Org generally, and Test Engineers specifically: helping reduce security vulnerabilities before they are coded into the product to begin with: as features are being spec'd and as code is being designed.This book is not a simple check-list testers can use to say "Yes, my feature is secure, Ship It". Rather, it helps place Test into the frame of mind of a hacker, it gives test a set of tools to help find security issues, it outlines an approach to software Test that will cause fewer security issues to be coded at all, let alone have to be fixed post code-complete (or in a Service Pack). Used in conjunction with other test books like _How to Break Software Security_ by James A. Wish these were available when I was first learning Mandarin Chinese. This will help you retain and recall what you've learned. The vocabulary is a reminder of practical words you'll need to communicate in everyday situations.

Nice and concise. Glad that both traditional and simplified characters are given. I made flashcards from this study sheet. The text is rather small, though, so it's not too handy for use if you were pulling it out on the spot.

I purchased this to aid in learning Mandarin, a language that is difficult all by itself. I took off a star because it has so much information in really small print. I also didn't like how some of the sheet was organized. It has Pinyin but there is also traditional and new characters for SOME of the words. I was confused by the coloring too. All in all, I think it is a good reference for learning and I hope someday to become proficient.

This is a good reference to have. Lot's of helpful vocabulary.However, the print is VERY SMALL. With my 50+ year old eyes, I need stronger than usual reading glasses to read it.

Convenient study guide for those of us who studied Mandarin decades ago. I have been looking at it daily as a refresher. This is not for a student starting out.. you need flash cards.

I bought this and it is perfect to study with! It's light weight to carry, fits in your bag, and easy to read. It's perfect to take with you to coffee or a restaurant and read as you're waiting.

I am so bummed about this. The layout and the material covered is top-notch. However, the font size is so tiny I must have a bright light and use readers and I still have issues reading it. I would have been happy to pay a little more for the extra pages necessary to accommodate the increased font size.

This is a book for serious hard core yokai otaku, not the casual fan. This is not a book like Yokai Attack! or Matthew Meyer's books that catalog a lot of yokai and tell their stories. It's like the first part of Foster's The Book of Yokai but even moreso. This is advanced level stuff - it's more a study of the study of yokai. It talks a lot about how different scholars have studied and analyzed yokai, their theories of their origin and social function, etc. If you're not into discussions of how scholar A said this but scholar B said that, you will find it frustrating. If that's OK with you, this is a good book if you are interested in how people think about yokai and the history that has shaped that thinking. For instance, there are interesting points throughout about the ways the folklorists actually had an effect on what they were studying, determining what versions and interpretations got passed down. It's not a rip-roaring exciting read, but in my opinion it's a lot more readable than most American books by academic scholars - there is a voice and personality to the writing at least some of the time - and it's well translated - it reads quite naturally. It's also a lovely book physically - not heavily illustrated but a number of very nice color images and nicely designed.

I enjoyed reading the book. The book itself is elegant, very nice edition with beautiful artworks. The language is good, clear and concise English.The introduction is also very helpful, for readers new to this topic (which turned out to be much more complex than I thought). As an anthropologist, I appreciated the rich and detailed accounts of stories/legends, as well as the reflections on change from old ages to contemporary society. I consider it a reference book mapping the field and guiding the reader (especially the non-Japanese Studies reader) to a comprehensive literature in Japanese. The author succeeds using advanced theoretical concepts in an easy-accessible style of writing – for instance in the inspiring chapter about Boundaries (Chapter 10)

I decided to read this because it seemed interesting as an introductory book. I wanted to learn about Yōkai, but it was hard to find a good book, so this book helped me a lot. I knew that Yōkai, Obake, and Yūrei were somehow different, but I did not know how, so now I understand thanks to this book.

I purchased this used (out of print) book via an Amazon-linked dealer. Travsky wrote clearly, enthusiastically and with enough detail. The book correctly covers the few rides that I know. It is useful for planning mountain biking for riders who gasp the thin gusting air of Wyoming.

Very old and out dated. Good for starting a campfire.

About the Author

Jessica Koslow is the chef and owner of Sqirl. Since it opened, the restaurant has been featured in Bon Appétit, received a glowing four-star review from LA Weekly, garnered praise in the Los Angeles Times, and has been covered by Bloomberg Business. Jessica’s creative cooking was featured in a New York Times article written by Melissa Clark, and she has also been covered by Mark Bittman. Her recipes have been published in Food & Wine magazine, and she is a contributor to the Wall Street Journal’s “Slow Food Fast” column. Sqirl has been listed among Los Angeles Magazine’s “75 Best Restaurants in LA” and Jonathon Gold’s “101 Best Restaurants.” Jessica spoke at CreativeMornings and appeared in the Culinary Beats series for Citibank as well as in an episode of Unique Sweets on the Cooking Channel. She was selected as one of 10 chefs in the country to appear and cook at the 2014 Eater Awards, and subsequently won the 2014 Eater Award for Best Chef in Los Angeles. I LOVE this cookbook. I have loved every recipe from this book so far. It was especially helpful weaning myself off caffeine to make her chicory dandelion root coffee alternative. I hope to visit Sqirl someday if I'm ever in LA. Can't wait for jessica's next cookbook on jam recipes :)

Y'all, I really wanted to love this book. I've never had the pleasure of visiting Sqirl (I'm a East Coaster), but I've read a lot about the restaurant and the owner over the years so I was definitely interested in picking up the cookbook.Some recipes are a lot more appealing than others but not too many really stood out to me as something I'd wanna make at home. But what stuck out to me the most is that while a lot of the recipes were seemingly simple they were actually ingredient heavy and fairly complicated. A lot of the recipes called for ingredients that aren't exactly common in most grocery stores or won't just be in your pantry already. There's even quite a few recipes that require ANOTHER recipe to be made. Then a lot ask for kitchen tools that not every home cook/baker would necessary have at their disposal, unless their running their own Sqirl-esque operation out of their home. What makes it a bit annoying is the book is written just assuming you have access to all these things. Sure, you could substitute but I feel like a lot of the recipes are made where even if you substitute one ingredient you're making a significant change in the overall result.It's still a beautiful book and a interesting exploration of cooking, but I don't feel like it was exactly intended for the average at-home cook, but rather something to sit on the coffee tables of the celebrity/famous patrons who probably make a cameo in the book.

I love Jessica's food. I have eaten in Sqirl and it is amazing food. Unfortunately, some of the recipes are hard to make if you don't have the right equipment (i.e. juicer to make the Turmeric drinks).

Simply the best. We cook from it several times a week and the recipes help us make beautiful food at home - perfectly cooked, perfectly seasoned. Make the frittata! And the turneric tonic! It's beautiful too and the perfect holiday gift.

If you've been to Sqirl, you know how good it is. I love being able to make the recipes at home since I live in NY and don't get to eat at Sqirl whenever I want. Highly recommend!
