I love Lynn Ross's book about hand weaving. After picking it up and putting it down, I find I have to come back to it again and again just to remember why these silly threads mean something more to me than just bits and pieces of flotsam. Something solid weighs in among the words and illustrations of her book. It is almost as if each thread tells a story and each piece of weaving has a family history. I appreciate the fact that I may never be able to make anything as beautiful as a piece of clothing, but even a simple wall hanging encourages me to remember my OWN story in thread. Pretty good book for beginners and oldbies alike. Weather you are just starting to learn the position, or are coming back after a long hiatus and need some refreshers, this book has you covered. I didn't think anything would ever replace "Jacques Plante: On Goaltending" in my goalie bag, but this book managed. With useful exercises, diet ideas, quick tips and easy to understand terminology (It won't make a beginner feel like a outsider) this book is great. It even has a section devoted to the roller hockey goaltender. The only flaw I can think of is that it is a little outdated with the equipment, but every book will have that problem eventually seeing how equipment is always changing and evolving with the game. So if you are looking for a book to pick up and get you on the road to your NHL career or just was to brush up for that beer league this summer, look no further.

I've read a few books on goaltending and this is by far the best and most authoritative, especially with the accompanying DVD to illustrate technique. I used this to work on my own game and now use it as a reference to help me with coaching, too. I have suggested this book to more people more times than I can remember and would bet I'll be suggesting it many more. Overall a very good, comprehensive, and easy to understand guide to a position that is not usually so easy to break down.

I am a beginner at the position and use this book as a guide to what I need to learn.I recommend this to all goaltenders or those interested in becoming a goalie. Good stuff.I also have "The trend quickest ways to improve your game" and "10 simple tricks the pros use" both good.

A superb picture book of how to look awesome. I found this guide after hearing Steve Harvey say its essential for every man to learn how to dress. Although the cover shows a suit this guide covers all the other situation when you should look your best. The author covers the colors to buy, which is first, second, third to add to your closet. In addition what to take for weekend, business trip and vacation all the way through how to back your suitcase. In addition once I followed this guide, switched to modern run suits (loose the baggy look), more fashion oriented shoes.. the women, I mean all the women would look smile, come over and offer compliments. Just switching up the shoes with the same outfit gives a whole different look of style. With five new designer suits, 5 belts and 11 sets of shoes for variety, everyone you would want to meet walks over to meet me. Friends of the magnificent girl I'm dating have all asked how did she meet me? Who knew it was so easy?

Whether you're naturally stylish or wanting to learn the tips and tricks of dressing well, this book belongs in any man's collection.This is a slightly large paperback book with full-color pages. This is like those style issues of magazines but much better organized and without ads. This book's format is broken down into thirteen chapters. Each is in-depth enough so you understand the concept of each category (i.e. jeans, formal wear, accessories, etc.), without having to read novel-length filler. There are limited words and lots of photos to show you examples. This makes it easy and quick to read and lets you visually understand.One of the smart things they did was crop off everyone's head in the photos. This lets the reader imagine themselves in the clothes, and it lets the styles speak for themselves. A smart move, in my opinion. One of the highlights are profiles of style celebrities who share their philosophies and secrets as to how to look good.It took a lifetime to learn most of this stuff on my own and I'm glad there is still more to learn, and it's all in this great book. Recommended.

I remember picking this book up for the first time a few years back. The thing that stuck out was the do's and don'ts illustrations, then the how to illustrations of what is practical for classic/conservative wear anytime. Daniel Peres helps you feel comfortable about choosing your style: formal, informal, casual, sporty, etc. What I love most about this book is its "illustrations!" It's a no brainer! All you have to do is look through it and the work is practically done for you in choosing optimum men's ensembles for any occasion. He also offers light hearted reading about himself and what he has seen in the fashion industry. I recently was able to pick this book up for a reasonable price and for me it was a must have. I have a library of fashion books, but for the practical, this is it!

As a young man I found recently I have become interested in putting more thought into what I wear everyday. I will say that the Details Style Manual has solid information and some nice visuals. However much of the information can be found for free on dozens of style blogs, the advice is not ground-breaking and this information is generally agreed upon despite personal style. I would say after a month and a half of reading blogs a little here and there I knew most of the information that applied to me. By no means am I a style expert but I understand the basic concepts and why they work.The Pros:The visuals are really clear, detailed, and informative.Makes for a good reference book. Are you going to go buy a new sports coat? Flip through and see how it should fit and what to look for quickly and easily.Quickly gets you up to speed on basic style for different occasions.Covers most subjects from denim + a tee to formalwearTackles difficult to wear items with 3 options increasingly more difficult to "pull off"Chapters are summed up with several looks based around the chapters item with situations you would wear the outfitGenerally focuses on timeless style rather than short-lived fashionThe Cons:Despite a forward saying that no one should tell you what to wear the author goes on to make some pretty blunt statements, with little or no explanation, implying that there are things you should always/never do. To support this they use ridiculous pictures to drive their point. For example they say never to wear a leather bomber and show one with garish lining and military inspired patches. I have a hard time understanding why a simple brown leather one can't work with jeans and a tee/polo/sweater as longs it fits properly.Some information is does not fit in with the timeless style theme of the book.If you take to heart the advice this book will end up costing you a lot of money. Sure, I would love a few custom shirts, several pairs of high quality dress shoes, high price suits(one of which is only appropriate for summer), several coats, several pairs of tailored pants, etc... but for most folks my age, which this book feels geared to, don't have that kind of money. You are better off deciding for yourself what items you will get the most use out of and start there instead of following "every man should own ________".My issue with this book is the price. If this book were around $10 I would wholeheartedly recommend it for anyone looking to change how they dress or to have as a reference book on fit, patterns, and styles of different items. However since the information really is easily available on plenty of men's style blogs for free with little effort in searching I have a hard time really recommending this book. As it has been said in many other reviews, if you are new to style this books has a lot of great information, but if you already know the basics you can probably pass on this unless you want a reference book.

This is a great book. Easy to read and follow.Most important is that it shows that although nothing is set on stone, you have to follow the basic rules of classic men style. For the beginner this book is a fantastic and useful tool, you can learn about the different types of shirts, jackets, shoes, fabrics, colors and how, when and where to wear them.All the photos are in color which is a great and straightforward way to make a point.

J is for Jazz, just published, is educational and engaging.Author Ann Ingalls has a history of music appreciation (The Little Piano Girl), but a picture book like this is always going to come down to the illustrations. Thankfully, the artwork hits the right notes. Catalan artist María Corte's geometric-cubist style is a perfect fit for this jazz book, and in fact she did the posters for this year's Monterey Jazz Festival.This book is so visually packed, it is nearly overwhelming. You may not get through the entire alphabet in one sitting! Every page is a poster, full of colors and shapes, plus depth to digest. The K-spread is my favorite: looks like a scene from Harlem Nights. Hot socks!Glossary of Jazz Slang included, along with a short history of jazz. The only thing missing is a colophon with insight into materials and typeface. Such reference information is suprisingly absent considering the publisher's ownership by World Book Encyclopedia.Other unusual (and recommended) alphabet books: Professor Whiskerton Presents Steampunk ABC and E-mergency![The reviewer was provided with a complimentary copy of the book.]
