If you are interested in the deeper and more complex aspects of Insight meditation, there is no other source to turn to. It is a fact that the Insight meditation movement's main primary source "is the commentarial writings of Buddhaghosa, particularly the Visuddhimagga" (Lance Cousins). This book contain an extensive explanation of the stages of concentration in meditative practice and the stages of insight and wisdom the meditator will go through. It is a guide and an atlas of the path to enlightenment. It also contains an exposition of Buddhist abhidhamma theory (phenomenology and psychology). It is long and written in a prose style that sometimes gets difficult, but it is an invaluable resource of information for those pursuing the Insight path.

First, I would only recommend , this book to those who have been meditating and those who have been studying Suttas. If you are a beginner or even intermediate I would not recommend this book because it would not be a help to your practice, and it might even be a hindrance. To be able to fully appreciate this book I would first recommend gaining some background in buddhism as a whole (I would recommend what the buddha taught by Walpola Sri Rahula.That said, Those who have a foundation in buddhist thought and have some foundation in meditation practice, i would highly recommend this book. It contains a guide on all the 40 meditation objects and how to meditate on them. It contains an extensive section on samatha (tranquility) practice and the jhanas. The most important and largest section of this book is the section on vipassana meditation; I would buy this book just for this section alone. This is a very difficult book and I would recommend reading it slowly and asking your meditation teacher any questions you might have. An amazing, life-changing book. A life companion for your spiritual journey, one that never began but is ongoing, moving but not moving, carrying you awhile and then leaving you behind. Well worth whatever time you give it, always welcoming more.

The book is technically a manual of commentaries and sub-commentaries stemming from the Sutta Pitaka. As such it addresses each aspect of the Buddha Sasana in an extremely coprehensive way not to be found in the original teachings of the Buddha. Most topics are described in terms of characteristic, manifestation, function and proximate cause in order to describe them both in themselves and in relation to the surrounding conditions. The book itself is divided in three parts each devoted to one of the three fields of practice: Sila or morality, Samadhi or Meditation and Panna or Wisdom. The first section, the easiest to read and understand, describes an extremely wide range of behaviours in terms of their wholesomeness in various circumstances; the second describes instead the various kinds of styles of meditation nad the different object attanaible by meditating; the third part, the most difficult, deals with the matter of the Abhidhamma, namely rupa, citta, cetasika and nibbana. So I would suggest to read this part only after having studies some easier commentary of the Abhidammha itself.All in all a wonderful but very demanding book.

This ponderous book has already answered so many of my 'advanced' questions, that I had to give it 5 stars. It a difficult style of writing, but it's also obvious the writer is very far along the Buddhist path. I'm only half-way through, but I know when I get to the last page I will start reading again. I bought it because I'm going to Thailand to meditate and wanted to know Theravada philosophy. Just the concept of meditation, using concentration and absorbtion, are worth the time devoted to this book, for me. I agree with another reviewer that we are blessed to have information like this available in our lifetimes. Peace.

Buddhaghosa's Path of Purification is a classic text of Pali Buddhist literature, requiring no commentary for any serious student of Buddhist thought. Edward Conze cites another edition of this text many times in his famous work "Buddhist Thought in India," commenting frequently on the questionable translation and remarking that he hopes for a superior translation in the future. Perhaps Bhikkhu Nanamoli's (aka Osbert Moore, 1905-1960) translation is the one to fulfill Conze's wish----I am not qualified to make this judgment.Instead, I wish only to address the physical quality of the hardbound edition of this text. Readers who are unfamiliar with Pariyatti Publishers and the BPS Pariyatti series may be concerned, as I was, about the quality of a text of this size (over 900 pages) and scope. I recently received my hardbound copy and I was pleased to see that the text is of extremely high quality---it is simply first rate in every aspect. The text is bound in durable, high-quality red cloth with gold lettering, the signatures are sewn, the acid-free, wood-free paper is of very good density and high quality (the book was printed in China), the typesetting is impeccable and easy on the eyes, and the book is wrapped in a an attractive, semi-glossy dust jacket (the reproduction on Amazon does not do it justice). In an age when publishers of college textbooks routinely sell $150+ texts that appear designed to fall apart after one year's use, a reasonably priced book of such high quality, clearly designed to last through many years of use, is a refreshing surprise, recalling distant times when quality was still important to producers of durable goods. I commend Pariyatti Publishing for producing quality editions of these classic and contemporary Buddhist texts. Prospective buyers may purchase without concern over the quality of the physical text; I will let others who are more qualified comment on the quality of Moore's translation.

Manning's Programming for Musicians and Digital Artists is enjoyable, informative reading, particularly if you like music and programming and are motivated to combine them in some way.The book offers plenty of clear how-to content for those who want to take their first deep dives into the techniques needed to make, modify and perform music using computers.Indeed, this excellent guide can help take you from generating "Hello, World" and "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" to linking up with MIDI devices and creating sophisticated music and sounds that can be used in live performances and elsewhere.Don't be scared by the word "Programming" in the title. Yes, it can help--but it is not required--to have a little bit of programming experience. As you start working with the audio-centric programming language ChucK, you will simply type a few brief lines of code or paste them from downloaded files into a simple on-screen tool known as the "miniAudicle." With this tool, you can then make changes and hear the results "instantly without interrupting other sounds being synthesized and heard," the authors point out. You also can save your files, load different files and do other tasks quickly.The free, open-source ChucK programming language, the authors' emphasize, "is designed specifically for real-time sound synthesis and music creation." Their book provides numerous short code examples to tinker with, as well as a few basic physics, math and music pointers that illustrate features and help support the authors' descriptions.Note: If your goal is to simply sit down at a keyboard and immediately start creating digital music, you may want to skip this book and look for other options. The authors concede that "many artists are happy with over-the-counter software systems and controllers for real-time performance work. Or perhaps you already know how to program in a language such as Java, but you find it doesn’t do what you want."ChucK gives you "greater under-the-hood access" than some of the other popular music/sound languages and systems, such as Csound, SuperCollider, JSyn, Max/MSP and PD (Pure Data). And ChucK, the authors note, "is generally more succinct, requiring much less code (lines of typed text) than these other languages in order to accomplish a particular task."You learn how to work with many different tools, ranging from oscillators, to filters, to delay generators, reverberators and other audio effects, and MIDI (even without a MIDI interface and cable). You also learn how to generate the sounds of several different musical instruments.ChucK has a key emphasis on ease of controlling time: for example, how long a tone or sounds occurs, how often it occurs within a set time period, and how long are the silences between tones or sounds.I have not yet tried all of the code examples in the book, but the ones I have tried in several chapters have worked very well on a Windows laptop and are easily modified and tested in real time using the miniAudicle. (The book also shows how to install ChucK on Mac OS X and Ubuntu Linux systems).Thus far, I have encountered only one code typo in the printed book's code examples. In Listing 1.8, "Playing notes with integer values," there is a mistake in the line that is supposed to multiply the frequency of a tone pitch by 2. However, the line is printed "1 *=> myPitch;" -- which simply repeats previous pitch. Changing the line to "2 *=> myPitch;" fixes the problem and takes only a couple of seconds to accomplish in the miniAudicle.I am giving this book five stars, because it meets a specific need for me and provides a lot of the information I have been wanting. You may want more--or less--than the book provides. But that is always the challenge for authors of programming how-to books: providing just enough for most readers. I had heard that ChucK is both powerful and easy to use, and, with this book and the miniAudicle, I have found that it really is.(My thanks to Manning for providing a review copy of the book.)

About the Author

A private person by nature, Mary Oliver has given very few interviews over the years. Instead, she prefers to let her work speak for itself. And speak it has, for the past five decades, to countless readers. The New York Times recently acknowledged Mary Oliver as “far and away, this country’s best-selling poet.” Born in a small town in Ohio, Oliver published her first book of poetry in 1963 at the age of 28; No Voyage and Other Poems, originally printed in the UK by Dent Press, was reissued in the United States in 1965 by Houghton Mifflin. Oliver has since published many works of poetry and prose. As a young woman, Oliver studied at Ohio State University and Vassar College, but took no degree. She lived for several years at the home of Edna St. Vincent Millay in upper New York state, companion to the poet’s sister Norma Millay. It was there, in the late ’50s, that she met photographer Molly Malone Cook. For more than forty years, Cook and Oliver made their home together, largely in Provincetown, Massachusetts, where they lived until Cook’s death in 2005. Over the course of her long and illustrious career, Oliver has received numerous awards. Her fourth book, American Primitive, won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1984. She has also received the Shelley Memorial Award; a Guggenheim Fellowship; an American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters Achievement Award; the Christopher Award and the L.L. Winship/PEN New England Award for House of Light; the National Book Award for New and Selected Poems; a Lannan Foundation Literary Award; and the New England Booksellers Association Award for Literary Excellence. Oliver’s essays have appeared in Best American Essays 1996, 1998, 2001; the Anchor Essay Annual 1998, as well as Orion, Onearth and other periodicals. Oliver was editor of Best American Essays 2009. Oliver’s books on the craft of poetry, A Poetry Handbook and Rules for the Dance, are used widely in writing programs. She is an acclaimed reader and has read in practically every state as well as other countries. She has led workshops at various colleges and universities, and held residencies at Case Western Reserve University, Bucknell University, University of Cincinnati, and Sweet Briar College. One of the most beautiful and touching love stories I have ever read. Mary Oliver writes of her and Molly Malone Cook's 40 year relationship shortly after Cook dies. The photographs are by photographer Cook and the text by poet and essayist Oliver. I have read it several times and will continue to read it.

Simple and eloquent eulogy. Mary Oliver does a superb job of portraying her relationship and life with Molly Cook. The photographs selected are wonderful and what a treat it would have been to meet either of these remarkable women. I love the simplicity of this little book, and the unreserved portrayal of them both.

This book is a rich blend of text by Mary Oliver and photos by Molly Malone Cook, her lifetime partner. The photographs let you take in the people and places of a time gone by, and the text, like all of Oliver's writing, is clear, clean, direct, and satisfying. She conveys all her love for the woman she calls "M.", and their life together in the place that was their home. So many scenes of their time with creative, ordinary and extraordinary people. This book is well worth spending time with, and if you love Mary Oliver's work, you'll want "Our World" in your library.

Well written overview of the history, species and maintenance associated with hedges in England. It also touches on the English laws pertaining to hedges. The only critique I have is that it assumes the use of tractors or other heavy machinery, and does not really discuss the historical methods at all. If you are not in England and don't plan to use machinery to plant and trim your hedges, this book is less helpful than it could have been. Otherwise excellent.
