An essential introductory guide for those wanting to know more about the genre and even more so if you are looking to buy standout VINYL/CDs from artists/bands of the genre.This edition has been updated to include more recent releases (and artists), and whilst it is nigh on impossible to be completely up to date, a 4th release would be required for that, it does an excellent job of pinpointing and highlighting the BEST albums (objective) from the plethora of albums available from the genre.Five stars without question!

Great book, one of the best resources, along with allmusic.com. However, if you have the 1st or 2nd edition, there is not enough new here to warrant buying this, wait for 4th edition.If you don't have any of the editions, which amazon sells all three, this is a great start as are the other two.

Fantastic read-flows so easy and the insight you gain form this book is amazing. A MUST have for any fan of the genre.

I have used the rough guide to reggae and the smaller "Rough Guide: 100 Essential CDs" by the same authors, for over a decade. They have proven to be excellent resources that, as the other reviewer's touch on, serve as buyer's guides rather than books to be read cover to cover (though the smaller one can be read cover to cover).Some of the other comments that criticize the book's organization and objectivity are in my opinion totally irrelevant when you consider the overall depth and quality of this reggae resource. I have been a roots reggae deejay for 10 years and thanks largely to Barrow and Dalton my collection (and enjoyment) of the music has exploded. They basically never fail to recommend great music, they seem to know everything about the genre, and I find myself gaining more and more profound respect for their judgement.I consider my reggae to have gone from first tier knowledge before reading the rough guide (the Wailers, Isaacs, Brown, Spear, Toots, Wailing Souls, Scratch, pablo, tubby, etc), on to a "second-tier" understanding after starting to explore this (skatalites, abyssinians, yabby you, junior byles, heptones, ellis, sugar minott, u-roy, keith hudson, etc) and then after really digging into the rough guide I have reached yet another level entirely, which has brought me some of the most classic and under-appreciated music to emerge from Jamaica (guys like joe higgs, jackie mittoo, the royal rasses, slim smith, and bob andy).The gift that keeps on giving. I particularly like the smaller "100 Essential CDs" for the layout and cover-to-cover readability. Plus it allows for a longer review of each album that becomes a de facto mini-biography of the artists.Thanks Steve and Peter for bringing me this muck joy! I am sure I will continue to find more classic music from your guides.

If you're looking for a quick and easy read on the history of Reggae, this probably isn't the place to start. If you're looking for a reference work to help you flesh out your reggae collection, this is the book for you. Steve Barrow might well be the most knowledgeable person writing about Reggae today.Since buying this book I've personally dropped a couple a grand on Reggae CDs, mainly on recommendations in this book or the Virgin Reggae guide. Overall, I'd say about 90%+ were worth my money. In this respect, the book has been invaluable to me. If you're a true fan of Reggae, it will be invaluable to you too.Some of the criticisms leveled by other reviewers on this site are a result of unfair or misguided expectations. They are apparently disappointed that the book isn't an easy read, or an oral history of some sort. I think the best way to approach this book is to start with a particular style of Reggae that you're interested in (i.e., Roots, Ska, etc.) and dig in. Get some on the recommended CDs, and enjoy! Then move on to another chapter if you are so inclined.One last plug for the author: Steve Barrow is the co-owner of Blood & Fire, currently Reggae's best reissue label. Buy everything you can get your hands with the B & F logo! - the stuff is worth its weight in ganja.

While Barrow is one of the most respected writers in terms of his knowledge of reggae music today, I found the overall approach of the book to be cumbersome and more than a little boring.It is hard to narrow down any genre of music to 100 or so "essential" titles to have, and Jamiacan music is certainly no exception. Indeed, to narrow down jazz, ska, rudeboy, rocksteady, reggae, dub, dancehall, and ragga (to name a few Jamaican sub-genres) to a few titles each is foolheardy at best.While this book may well help one add titles to their collection, the book is a mere microcosm of the music of Jamaica. For my money, search out the Virgin Guide to Reggae for a much more complete and information-ridden guide to the musics of Jamaica.

My parents raised me on roots, but when I wanted to broaden my DUB collection, one of the resources I turned to was the Rough Guide.Rough Guide is a great go-to reference for the history of different reggae sub-genres and makes a solid buying guide. I've not regretted any music purchases I've made using information from this book. It really helped steer me toward the kinds of music I enjoy and away from things I don't like quite so much, but it also suggested successful adventures I might never have tried otherwise.

I've tried countless times to figure out a way to get in control of the Email Dragon. Never have been able to come up with a SYSTEM to do it. Jim's book describes a system that makes the most of Outlook while working around its deficiencies. I've never been able to get Outlook operational because of its complexity. Every time I'd try, there were so many decisions to figure out that I'd just give up and go back to my old, known (and woefully outdated mailbox) This tiny skinny book is a step-by-step, fast and easy tool to get it done NOW.Once I decided to trust Jim and his book (and put away the piles of lengthy other books I'd bought), it only took a few hours to get set up. He must have been a technical writer in another lifetime because he knows how to tell you in simple steps what to do and the right sequence to do it. I ran into one simple problem with code he has in the book for an auto-filing macro. I shot him an email and within an hour, he'd sent me the code and it worked the first time!This book is priced WAY TOO LOW. It should be at least $20 for the value in it. Hope he comes out with a follow-on book where he demonstrates all the possibilities of his system.

"Control Your Day" has certainly helped me stay on top of my emails, and I get plenty. The clear, careful instructions on how to set-up virtual search folders in Outlook are very helpful. The use of search folders can be applied to other tasks as well besides those described here. The instructions in Control Your Day are very detailed, and a few hiccups might be encountered along the way, but Jim McCullen is very responsive in providing whatever help you may be need. He also has a web-site and some free resources that supplement and summarize the book, but you'll want the book. I refer back to it when I want to make some adjustments to my set-up to improve efficiency.

This works. I implemented the Outlook settings and have used this CYD system for the past week.I've tried numerous Folder and Categorizing organizing methods to better manage my inbox and tasks... but have always failed to maintain it as I tend to just leave everything in my inbox and to-do list grow beyond control.But this CYD method forces me to Do-Delay-Delegate-Dump and makes it very difficult to just "ignore". I'm using Getting Things Done methodology better than I've been able to previously.Instead of using the Outlook "Task" facilities, I am "Posting" non-email tasks in my Inbox so everything is always in my CYD management screens and the tasks cannot be overlooked/ignored/forgotten.I know it's only been a week, but like I said, once this system is set up in Outlook it practically forces you to follow the rules and be more productive. I'm a big fan.

I "met" Jim on the GTD Virtual Study Group podcast years ago when he first presented the Control Your Day material. Our corporate Outlook setup wasn't compatible at the time, but I never forgot the power of these ideas! I came back to this several months ago, bought both ebook and paperback, and fully implemented the CYD approach.WOW! This has been an unbelievable stress reducer and productivity enhancer! I had a coworker tell me this morning how amazed they were at all the projects I was involved in and how I was able to keep all tasks and communications current. That's CYD. I've been a devotee of David Allen's Getting Things Done system for years, so this is a tremendous privilege to have such a powerful Outlook customization tool for my day-to-day work.Buy the book. I love the tools in this book. I don’t use them all, but the tools I do use have made my Outlook much more manageable. I have a copy of Jim’s book to my IT guy. As Jim notes in the book, the tools don’t transfer to iPhone or in my case iPad. That is regrettable since it requires me to be at my computer to use these tools. I found the use of a single folder for my ‘processed’ email with Categories (instead of folders and sub folders) the most useful tool. That alone made my email amazingly more manageable.

Just didn't know how to use it!!CYD, a must have for the compulsive emailer, the corporate executive and the all time procrastinator as myself.Gives a very straight forward guide on how to setup your outlook for maximum control of your tasks derived form mails and self imposed task as well.The dashboard structure proposed is great. The reason for four stars instead of five is I wish there was more page devoted to walking through some typical "day in the life" scenarios.

This book is great, and has helped me manage me e-mails greatly. I used to be buried in e-mails and always worried if I missed something. This system is based on the Getting Things Done method, which i followed up with. Easy to follow and you can use this method along side your current method. I wish I would have known about this years ago.

Chef Travis Milton goes on about his bond with his locale and the crops that are part of his history in cooking. But, then sous chef Richard Arteaga gets into his tattoo of a rare apple and why he shares the same image with two close friends. Many of the stories are peppered with recipes that, like their ink, are flavored with personal connections and not just made fluffy for appeal. Each story plucks at exposed nerves. Chef/owner Michelle Pusateri bears all with a banner-emblazoned stand mixer reading “Sweet and sober.”As personal as food is to chefs, so are their tattoos. Knives & Ink shares the inspiration for the creative expression of both the food - in the form of recipes - and, more importantly, the artwork of the cooks and chefs included in the collection. Often deeply personal, Isaac Fitzgerald and Wendy MacNaughton share snapshots of this really artful, energized, and sometimes perverse flavor that makes this crew of kitchen hooligans do what they do and wear the flourishes upon their skin.Being included in this collection caused me to really look at my ink and remember the whys and whens.
