This book has made for one of the longest and most difficult reads I've ever gone through, but Darius Rejali has really pulled off an incredible feat here. The sheer amount of research on display is very impressive. Throughout the course of the book, he details the origins of specific torture methods, why they exist, and what types of governments use them today (if at all). It helps put modern-day events like the Abu Ghraib and Guantánamo scandals in proper historical context and explains why it is that democracies like America now use torture methods that leave no physical marks. (In short, in democracies, human rights organizations and laws against torture have driven interrogators to use methods less prone to leaving evidence behind while totalitarian governments use physical scarring to terrify their targets.)The book also delves into the question of whether or not torture, examining several military conflicts from which reports emerged stating that torturing had produced useful intelligence. What is revealed, however, when the numbers are broken down, is that the number of innocent people tortured in order to find the one person on whom torture did work, is ridiculously high in every instance.For anyone interested in studying this awful subject and attempting to make sense of how we got where we are today in regards to it, this book is an essential read.

This book is by far the most complete and comprehensive source available on torture and issues related to torture. Rejali's scholarship is impeccable and Torture and Democracy is a must have for anyone who wishes to understand the history, causes and meanings of torture.

I bought this book in order to be able to shoot down any argument about why torture should be used, I wasn't disappointed. Though, it is not an easy read, so make sure to give the book the attention and breaks it deserves in order to digest all the information presented. It is dense but well worth the read.

Why are so many people, including high ranking people who should know better, so convinced that torture "works," and that it provides reliable intelligence? Do they have supporting data to back up this assertion, or is it just a gut feeling? Well, now we are just a little closer to tossing this bizarre view point to the trash heap of history. Darius Rejali, in his painstakingly researched book "Torture and Democracy," has investigated the records of numerous countries that conducted torture throughout the 20th century, including France during the Algerian uprising and the Germans during WWII. He has convincingly shown, with actual data and analysis, that torture is ineffective for intelligence gathering simply because it produces an avalanche of disinformation, making it almost impossible to separate any real intelligence from false leads.It is clear to me that Rejali did not begin his project fifteen years ago (prior to 9/11, BTW) with any preconceived notions that he then set out to prove. As he explains, he was actually trying to find out why so many countries, including democracies (though generally in secret), resort to the tactic. His initial thought was that maybe there is something to it, since so many countries repeatedly make use of the approach as an intelligence gathering tool. It was only after conducting years of exhaustive research, thoroughly catalogued in the book, that he realized that the countries who resort to the tactic do so out of ignorance and because they fail to think through what they are doing. And it turns out that many countries, even the Nazis in Germany, eventually figure out that the approach is counter-productive, and eventually revert back to more "traditional" police methods to gather intelligence. This was the case with the French in Algeria, who did not begin to meet with success in the city of Algiers until AFTER they abandoned torture as a policy.The bulk of the book consists of Rejali cataloguing the use of torture in dozens of countries around the world, including an explanation of the techniques and an explanation of which methods are used in which countries. At first, it makes for compelling reading, but the sheer exhaustiveness of the research, which Rejali had to present to make his case, is pretty depressing, and in truth, it's not necessary to read it all before you say - okay, okay, I get it, I get it, it doesn't work....For those who want to take a shortcut, the chapters toward the end of the book comprise the majority of Rejali's analysis, and it is possible to skim or skip the middle chapters since the evidence against torture is provided in such relentless and eventually nauseating detail. In other words, one could save a lot of time, if they accept the initial premise that torture is an ineffective tactic, by simply going straight to the two penultimate chapters toward the end - "What the Apologists Say" (which blows big holes in the so-called "Battle of Algiers argument"),and "Why Governments Don't Learn."I am convinced that the book should be required reading for all people in this country, both private and public citizens, who remain convinced that torture is an effective intelligence gathering tool. It should also serve as an antidote to those who have watched too many episodes of "24" and thus believe the "ticking time bomb" scenario is actually realistic.For my part, it is depressing that no one takes the time to think this through, and that a book like this is even necessary to convince people that torture is a bad idea. The truth is that, like myself, Rejali appears to be a utilitarian, who would condone the use of torture if it could actually be shown that it is an effective means to gather intelligence in a dire situation. However - it most definitely is not. As Rejali shows again and again, the fundamental fallacy of the "torture is effective" argument is that it presumes magical telepathic powers. How does one know with certainty that the suspect we have caught really does know anything about the ticking time bomb, or where the next terrorist strike will occur, or where the kidnapped little girl is located? We may suspect that he does, but what if it turns out that we're wrong? Undoubtedly he'll start "singing" something if we torture him - but now we'll waste vital time chasing false leads if it turns out he is the wrong guy. Here's a scenario to illustrate the point further. In Iraq a bomb goes off. People gather. US troops arrive. People scatter, including what appears to be a group of ten or so young men. They actually have nothing to do with each other, they just happened to have congregated on one side of the site together. The US authorities manage to grab five of them. Turns out that someone with magic telepathic powers would know that one of the five actually was a bad guy involved with the bombing. But our intrepid torturers don't know this. They start torturing all five of the men. All five subsequently start "singing" information. In the case of four of them, it is by definition all gibberish because they really were innocent bystanders who just ran when the US showed up. Now they most certainly will provide bits and pieces of rumors and stories they've heard around town that sounds like it might have some meaning because they're naming real people and places (of course they would - they're from there) but ultimately none of it has any utility. The one "bad guy" sings too. Half of what he says is gibberish - but some of it is actually real intelligence. (This, BTW - was the problem the French ran into in Algiers, which we have been facing in Baghdad and Afghanistan.) So I challenge all people who believe "torture works" to answer this one simple question: In the above scenario, how on earth are you going to differentiate the 10% real intelligence from the 90% that is gibberish? What magic powers are you going to use to do so? Until we develop mind-reading powers, we cannot be sure whether the person we are torturing even knows anything useful, but then, if we had those kind of powers, we wouldn't have to torture him in the first place - we could just read his mind.If only the real world worked as simply and neatly as it does in the fictional universe of "24."

A depressing although valuable book that shows how "clean" torture techniques--those that don't leave visible scars or physically incapacitate the victim--have been the hallmark of torturers in the military and police forces in democratic nations.Rejali documents the use of psychological torture, waterboarding and other clean methods by France, the UK, the United States and other non-totalitarian/non-authoritarian nations. In the western European countries it started with interrogations in colonies--the UK against the Mau Mau in Kenya and the insurgents in Malaysia during the "emergency" and the French in Vietnam and Algeria. Many of the oligarchs of Latin America took their methods from France.This is almost a reference book of "clean" torture history and usage with chapters the cover how attitudes and procedures evolved in local practice--cattle prods in Argentina, hooding and sleep deprivation in Northern Ireland, drugs in areas controlled by the United States. With chapters on complicit doctors, apologists for torture and evolving refinement of use of electricity, water and fear it is a grim but important book.The ray of light that shines through is the efficacy of local, national and international monitoring by the press, the judiciary and non-government organizations in staying the hand of torturers. Put simply, they can't afford to be exposed and caught which is why the stealth techniques have become characteristic of torture in open societies.

Though original sources are incomplete and most written by whites, Jordan (Charlottesville and the University of Virginia in the Civil War) pieces together an astonishing portrait of slaves and free blacks in pre-and post-War Virginia. Of the 3.65 million blacks in the South, one in every six lived in Virginia, "a breeder state" where dealers boasted "Slavery is our business and business is good." By classifying blacks as Afro-Virginians, Afro-Yankees or Afro-Confederates, Jordan explores one of the War's most vexing questions: Why did some slaves and free blacks join the Confederate Army? Those "who boasted the loudest of their desire to fight Yankees," Jordan believes, "did so... in hopes of obtaining privileges within the confines of slavery." In fact, in Virginia the most revered slaves, body servants, did triumph by fighting Yankees-in 1924, that state provided for pensions to those body servants, hostlers, teamsters, cooks who "rendered service to the Confederacy." That $25 annual pension was paid to heirs as late as the 1950s. Yet perhaps most shocking is what Jordan calls the "Confederate paradox of humanity and inhumanity to blacks," like providing excellent medical care for enlisted men while making it legal to whip or execute slaves or free blacks for not showing proper respect, praying without permission or gathering in groups of more than five. Some slaves were allowed to purchase themselves, earn wages and own land, yet they could be lynched for "eyeball rape." "African-American history is not for the squeamish," Jordan says in his preface, and he is right. Great Book!! Very important and easy to read book. Great for any historian!!

I have not read the book fully

very good book that sheds some insight in to Black Confederate Soldiers. It was first published in 1995. As another reviewer stated the editing could have been better but other than that it was pretty good. This is a good place to start if you are looking to find out more about minorities in the Confederate army. There are better books out there on the subject but this is one is good if you get it at a good price.

Jordan is to be congratulated for his wide-ranging research and for taking steps to address historical issues that tread on politically correct toes. Unfortunately, this is not a finished work of history. It is perfunctorily written, and the chapters are poorly organized. It contains some excellent information, but it is not a book for the casual reader or even the casual Civil War buff.The antebellum South, and the Confederacy it spawned, was a complex place -- 9 million individuals, white and black, whose support of, opposition to, or acceptance of slavery and secession stemmed from a thousand different motives. If one can generalize about the slave South, it is to say that an attitude of white supremacy and black inferiority prevailed among its white citizens (as it did in the North); and that African-Americans, both slave and free, who lived in the slave states were subjected to a stifling degree of legal control by slave owners and state governments. Jordan goes over these two major points -- already familiar to students of the era -- in the first section of the book, "Uncertain Trumpet." The breadth of his research is commendable, but his technique of relating it is a bit numbing; a string of paragraphs, each a topic sentence and several redundant supporting anecdotes, is hardly historical analysis, much less a readable narrative. Some of the anecdotes are powerful -- e.g., a slave mother is haunted by the sound of her owner's piano, purchased with the proceeds from the sale of the slave's daughter -- and the author would have done better to concentrate on those, to examine their meaning more closely.The most controversial parts of the book are in the second half ("Give Us a Flag") and deal with black Virginians who served the Confederate cause either by taking up arms in its defense or voluntarily supporting the white soldiers who did. As have many other authors (including Confederate apologists who continue to deny that the Civil War and the Confederacy were essentially about slavery and racism), Jordan cites numerous anecdotes about black Virginians fighting with Rebel forces or serving as cooks, teamsters, servants, musicians, laborers, and in other noncombatant roles in the Confederate armies and government. He also supplies a fair amount of anecdotal evidence for a deep split among white Southerners over the propriety of arming slaves. Even as the Confederacy was sliding to destruction in the spring of 1865, many whites were adamantly opposed to the tardy steps taken by the Confederate congress to organize black fighting units. This ongoing opposition from all corners of the Confederacy -- not to mention the overall pattern of racism and subjugation of blacks in Civil War America -- calls into serious question the value of the anecdotal evidence often cited to "prove" widespread African-American support for the Southern cause, because it implies widespread white gratitude for this support. Examining this topic alone would have been a worthwhile book. As other reviewers here state, Jordan could have done a much more thorough job in testing this anecdotal evidence.There seems to be little question that some African-Americans supported the Confederate war effort, including military service, even before 1865. But to what extent? To what military effect? Did the arming of some slaves, or the volunteering of some blacks for military or quasi-military duty, have any widespread impact on the racial and political attitudes of white Southerners? Were these "Afro-Confederates" genuine Southern patriots, or infrequent exceptions to the repressive laws of racism and slavery, or simply black men and women who sought to ingratiate themselves with their white owners and the white community? These are questions that Jordan raises in this book, and that's a start. I hope he'll spend some time and a couple of other books trying to answer them.

It's not an impressive work. One portion of the book is a standard overview of slavery in Virginia, drawn from secondary or much-used primary sources. The second portion discusses alleged "black Confederates" in the South, and uncritically accepts every rumor, alleged sighting, and unsupported account of mostly mythical "black Confederates." Never once does the author engage any critical faculties in looking at such accounts, nor does he explain how it is that none of these "black Confederates" show up in the records of the Confederacy, as opposed to ostensible sightings recorded by Union war correspondents, etc.An old saying fits the book well: "What is good in it is not original, and what is original in it is not good."

The book is informative. I could have given it it three stars, as it sometimes seems to ramble. It is a fresh breath into an obscure, yet interesting topic of the Civil War that in my opinion, is wothy of future exploration. Diane Lockward is the editor of The Crafty Poet II: A Portable Workshop (Terrapin Books, 2016) and the earlier volume, The Crafty Poet: A Portable Workshop (Terrapin Books, rev. ed., 2016). She is also the author of four poetry books, most recently The Uneaten Carrots of Atonement (Wind Publications, 2016). Her awards include the Quentin R. Howard Poetry Prize, a poetry fellowship from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, and a Woman of Achievement Award. Her poems have been included in such journals as Harvard Review, Southern Poetry Review, and Prairie Schooner. Her work has also been featured on Poetry Daily, Verse Daily, The Writer's Almanac, and Ted Kooser's American Life in Poetry.

Do you dread free writes? Are you, like me, a writer who comes out of a workshop where you are given a statement prompt with a blank piece of paper? Diane Lockward’s craft books are definitely for you, as well as for any other poet who wants to improve and enhance their craft. Although slanted toward those who write poetry, this book would also be useful for poetry lovers who want to understand the intricacies of the poetry they read.This is the third she’s published, and I truly believe that each one is more comprehensive than the one before. Lockward uses the word prompt in her book, but I prefer to call them exercises. She takes a poem, dissects it into what aspects of craft make that poem work, explains why it works, and gives clear instructions for us to follow. She also includes sample poems written to the instructions.I avoid free writes, frequently finding that the only thing I write is my grocery list. I have a bookcase full of poetry craft books, and Lockward’s are the ones I find the most useful. I rave about them to members of my writing critique group. Several of the poems I’ve written from Lockward’s books have been published.I could fill this review with cliches and hyperbole, but I know it would make Diane cringe. So let me end with this: Buy this book.

I’ve read all three of Lockward’s poetry handbooks. I’ve recommended them, given them as gifts, and rated them five stars apiece. Each book deserves about 50, because they’re more valuable than at least 10 other writing handbooks on the market. This is why it takes me a few months to read them, even though I do very few of the exercises. I treat them as reference books, and go back to them whenever I’m stuck.I prefer to read one section or two, then stop to digest them. Some of the techniques I’ve picked up have become part of my regular writing process. No one can believably claim writer’s block if they have one of Lockward’s books at hand. Simply reading the wonderful poems gives me ideas. I was lazy about writing during the holiday bustle, but still found myself putting this book down because I HAD TO WRITE.There’s something for everyone (probably because she gathers tips from everyone). I recommend it to beginner poets, experienced poets, and readers who enjoy reading poetry or want to understand it better. This is Poetry Appreciation at its finest. Now that I do have more poetry credentials, it’s a thrill to read tips from my favorite poets and think, “Exactly what I’d say.” A good poet never stops learning and growing, and Lockward helps us do that.

I have been writing poetry since elementary school, am now 71 and have had no formal poetry instruction. I I find this book, and the 2 that preceded it -The Crafty Poet I and II, the BEST books of "how-to"s for the poet. There are numerous and consistently excellent brief focused lessons by a variety of poets, beautiful examples and specific recommendations, written by the author, Diane Lockward, about how to approach a similar poem. I have so enjoyed doing many of the suggested exercises as I hone my craft. I highly recommend all three books.

The Practicing Poet: Writing Beyond the Basics is a fantastic book for poets at any stage in their writing career. Full of craft tips, contemporary poems, and writing prompts, the book is perfect for individuals or for use as a text in creative writing courses. Chapters lead writers through how to discover new material, working with line breaks, crafting surprise, and much more. There’s even a section on publishing your book of poetry, including ideas on manuscript organization, book promotion, and poetry reading protocol. The rich array of contributors is impressive as well and includes poets such as Ada Limon, Dorianne Laux, Patricia Smith, David Kirby, Alberto Rios, Molly Peacock, and Campbell McGrath to name just a few.

This is not the first book I've purchased by Diane Lockward. Her personal poetry is stunning. However, something about "The Practicing Poet - Writing Beyond the Basics," stays with me in a different way. Perhaps it is the format itself which lends itself to a satisfying creative experience. I relished the "tips," from different poets. I read the poetry focused on a designated prompt and reread it again to see the link. I took my time and this is why everyone should read this book . . . it's about taking time to enjoy the work. It's about thinking. This is not a book to rip through--but rather it's a book that requires undivided attention and this is a good thing. It's a book about craft with proof of why a poem works. It's a book that every aspiring poet and writer should read. I'm keeping mine on my desk. It's a gem.
