Mitch chose excellent examples of different approaches to NewLaw from around the globe. Trying to stay on top of all of the changes happening at rapid speed can be exhausting and confusing, but Mitch keeps the reader focused on a small handful of enterprises and takes us through each of their journeys. The book is a quick read and full of quotable text!

This is a fascinating and well-written account of the author's first-hand views of some of the most innovative law firms, legal-services providers, and law departments in the world. Particularly interesting is the contrast between the fastly superior ability to innovate and attract capital for expansion among UK and Australian firms, compared to their US counterparts, which still suffer from increasingly antiquated restrictions on ownership and capital sources. UK and Australian firms are making the most of these opportunities.Kowalski circled the globe for over a year meeting with these innovators, and includes a number of thoughts and suggestions for firms trying to grow, provide creative solutions for clients, and attract and retain younger lawyers who demand cutting edge business strategies, use of technology, and attention to social impact.I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the future of the practice of law.

The style and content of The Great Legal Reformation reveal Mitch Kowalski as a story-teller of the traditional genre. He makes significant NewLaw initiatives accessible and memorable, while drawing lessons and pointing to what each might suggests about the future. As the author of NewLaw New Rules NewLaw New Rules - A conversation about the future of the legal services industry I am pleased to recommend Mitch's book to readers engaged in where legal services are headed - from the big end of town through the mid-market to start-ups.

This book provides a wider view regarding the provision of legal services. It is a good starting point to reinvent a legal career. I strongly recommend this reading for those professionals willing to move a step forward in their careers and their lives.

WITHOUT QUESTION - AN IMPORTANT BOOK FOR OUR TIMES….AS A PROFESSIONAL YOU NEED THIS SHORT BOOKTO FACE THE 21st CENTURY ARMED AND PREPAREDAn appreciation by Elizabeth Robson Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers and Phillip Taylor MBE, Head of Chambers and Reviews Editor, “The Barrister”Yes, we are at a tipping point of change for legal matters. It is therefore refreshing that Mitch Kowalski’s book does not look simply “to advances in technology and artificial intelligence as the cause or the future of the Great Legal Reformation”, but to so much more at this technological crossroads!Do start Mitch’s book by reading his Preface and Introduction carefully which sets the scene for you of where we are today with all these reforming changes. Through in-depth case studies and vignettes, Kowalski “takes us on a tour to meet some of the trailblazers breaking the legal service provider mould, allowing us to eavesdrop on his conversations with them”.But be very clear about the position: “The Great Legal Reformation” is not just a “glimpse into the future of how he and others might see the legal world developing as the Great Legal Reformation unfolds”. It is also an insight into “the here and now”, and into what these innovators “have already envisioned and achieved”. And, as the author says, these are “the platforms from which yet further innovation and re-formation of the market will be driven”.The book covers a number of legal topics of the day which we can quote from Mitch’s book. “From the power and opportunity of regulatory change to enable structural change, access to capital, and the participation of people who happen not to be lawyers; through to the need to focus on efficiency, continuous improvement, process and project management; to the enduring value of vision, culture, values, leadership, energy and employee engagement, these studies and conversations inform, reveal and challenge”. In other words, a pretty substantial review with much reforming zeal incorporated!Kowalski does not just present “the new world through rose-tinted glasses or deny the existence of risk”, he goes further with useful case studies: the story of Slater & Gordon’s mixed fortunes recounted by Mitch amongst other stories is testament to that point. But he shows a different way of thinking and acting. Whether lawyers like it or not, these are initiatives that buyers of legal services should consider carefully. The conclusion in chapter 12 may well be prescient when Mitch that “when legal historians look back at this period of time 50 years from now, they will conclude that the ultimate legacy of the Great Legal Reformation will be the transformation of legal services from a lawyer-dominated industry into a service that is merely augmented by lawyers”. What an interesting possible development! Thank you Mitch for this thought-provoking thesis. The book was published on 13th September 2017.
