A wonderful aspect about reading a series is being able to enjoy the journey of the characters as they learn, discover, and blossom. Even better, in this series, all of the aforementioned is happening amid a whole lot of compelling murder and mayhem!Christopher and JX have been together for nearly a year now, have survived more than one murder mystery, are sharing a house, and are even talking marriage. That's a heavy load for the usually cynical and self-deprecating Christopher. Add on this fact: a body has been found in the backyard of his former home, bringing him back into contact with his ex, David. Christopher once again finds he and JX caught up in cops and corpses. JX finds the re-emergence of David to be somewhat...disconcerting. One of my favorite parts of the story was watching Christopher's dawning realizations of the depth of the differences between the relationship he had with David, and the one he has with J.X. ♥Josh Lanyon delivers the story with her usual brilliance. The book is plotted seamlessly and the pace of the action made for a cover-to-cover read. She particularly shines at dialogue, delivering Christopher's ever present, disparaging internal dialogue and outward snarkiness with a deft hand. I made many notes in this book using a laugh emoticon as my only comment!In this book we get to enjoy Christopher finally coming to terms with elements from his past as he shows a new maturity and steps fully toward embracing his future with JX. This reader fully appreciates how the author has balanced wit, humor and poignancy with the mysterious and macabre. Looking forward to the next book already!
This is the fourth book in the series and, much like a fine wine, the series has improved with age. And that’s the nice thing about a series: the author has the time and luxury to let the characters mature and learn and just be.The story takes place four months after the events of ‘The Boy With the Painful Tattoo’ and we find Christopher Holmes and J.X. Moriarity enjoying domestic bliss. Of course, that comes to a screeching halt when Christopher gets a call from his ex David informing him that a body has been discovered in the backyard of his former home in Los Angeles. To make matters worse, David suggests the body is Christopher’s former assistant (who David ran off with) and accuses him of killing him.The cops soon appear and Christopher, once again, finds himself in the middle of a murder investigation. The difference here, is this isn’t his first rodeo and he’s actually been paying attention.The book is well-plotted and well-paced and there are some surprising (and pleasing) twists and turns in the relationship between Kit and J.X. We’re treated to the hilarous insanity that is Rachel Ving and we also see the return of an old frenemy.Lanyon (as usual) is at the top of her game with punchy dialogue, most notably Kit’s withering self-assessments and witty asides. Of course, J.X. gets his licks and quips in, too.However, the real revelation is Kit’s newfound self-awareness and restraint. I found the book to be an eminently satisfying read.
Can't say how much I loved this book! Oh my God, this was the book I've been waiting for. Kit and JX are passionate and in love and everything we could want. Kit is becoming the person he was meant to be and JX is finally getting the love he wants from Kit. The action is fast and furious and funny. I love this series and this is the best one yet. I read another review that said the person was disappointed. How?? The best book I've read in a while and another great book from Lanyon. Can't wait for another one!
I cannot believe I am writing a negative review of a Josh Lanyon book. I love her stuff and have re-read this series a few times. And yet, this book was so disappointing it is hard to know where to start. I read it quite a few weeks ago and needed the time and distance to write a more balanced review (hence 2 stars vice 1...)This book had so many problems and was so unlike her other work: too many plot lines for such a short story is one of the main problems. There were so many that a couple of important ones are resolved in a couple of paragraphs near the end. It was practically offensive to the reader who had invested so much time reading to that point.The Kit-JX relationship just felt flat in this story. I wasn't left feeling that this was a solid relationship, in fact the opposite -- I'm sure that was not the author's intention. I hated being left with any doubt at all over two characters I really cared about.There was lots about the state of publishing which is presumably of interest to the author but it didn't make it a page-turner for me and frankly caused me to do some skimming.I'll stop there but there were lots of other things that just were nowhere near Josh Lanyon's best. In fact, the last 50% of this book felt as it she was in a hurry to get it done. It is precisely because this author has such a way with words and has such greatly though-out sentences that carry both the plot and loads of emotion that make her an auto-buy for me. This book didn't even pretend to be of that caliber.I'll continue buying her books but this one is a good one to pass on, specially if your'e a rabid Lanyon fan.
IN OTHER WORDS MURDER clearly reaffirms Josh Lanyon as a gifted author in the area of Murder Mystery Genre. Lanyon excels in the area of plot and character development via witty dialogue and gives further incite into the relationship between Christopher and JX Detective...great installment to the Christopher Homes Series. Can not wait for the book in my preferred medium of audible books, hopefully Kale Williams will narrate .
