When it comes to Japan's larger cities, I've always opted for Tokyo over Osaka...but I have to say, I kind of fell in love with Osaka and it's probably because of some of the places I experienced in this guide. I really only had a few days and mostly hit up the Shopping suggestions, but this guide took me to some fantastic off-the-beaten path places. Since the streets are kind of hard to navigate in Osaka, I really had to rely on the abstract map in the back to find some of these places, but once I got there I was happy. I really enjoyed the old Mitsubishi offices turned boutiques...mysterious, eerie, and Margiela! They also had a really neat architectural bookstore in there that had Japanese copies of Le Corbusier's Modular. I'm kickin' myself for not buying those. I will definitely recommend Osaka over Tokyo to any friends travelling abroad....it's cheaper, has good shopping, and is a hop-skip away from Kyoto!

I am very impressed with Phaidon City Guides ,the images are simply great,And Love the size of the book.It is NOT a travel guide but rather a pic book, with very unique and interesting photos and small bios of locations and/or places to see and go,Planning to keep adding some more to my collection.

I recently purchased two books from this series for a trip to Oslo and Stockholm. I did not find them useful at all and got alot more information from the City websites as well as the Tourist Information booths when I arrived in each city. Even the maps included in the books were not helpful as they were too small. I was not familiar with this series when I purchased the books and could not open them to view them on the Amazon site - maybe that should have deterred me from purchasing them. I would not recommend these at all.

Absolutely useless. Laughable in the way it points you to the ugliest sights in Riga, ignoring the myriad beautiful ones.

That book arrived in good qualiity. And I'm enjoying reading it.Thanks for that you have the book in stock.

Tiny book with pretty graphic design but not so much content. After living in Osaka for 4 months, I found myself visiting ZERO places mentioned in this book.

I ordered this (and unfortunately a few other cities as well) thinking they would be little fit in your pocket type things that would contain helpful information on what to see in each city. What they are is just a heap of stupid artisty type photographs of the inside of hotel rooms, random people's flats, cafes, restaurants, shops, and other things you aren't going to be interested in seeing. There's even a page of a photograph of someone's CD and action figure collection in this Oslo one. Doesn't even have the outsides of any things you would actually go and look at and maybe photograph yourself when walking around Oslo. Nor an even half decent map, on the back cover there is a colour map of Oslo yet most of the street names are missing. So useless to find your hostel or whatever you're looking for. No information on how to get to the airports, especially the far away ones that Ryanair and the budget airlines use. A complete waste of money!

Wallpaper city guides are unique because they highlight innovative and eye-catching architectural gems. Osaka is an industrial city that features a few of these gems. The Wallpaper guide maps it out so you do not miss them.I grabbed dinner and cocktails at the Dojima hotel. It was spectacular. I also went to one of the recommendations in the "escapes" section: the Yodoko house in Hyogo. It was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Viewing it changed my life. I will never look at a room the same way again. It's an obscure place that I never would have stumbled upon without this guide. This guide is for chic travelers who want to venture out and explore the city in the most stylish locations. This is a guide for those who enjoy fine architecture.

Coyote and the Sky: How the Sun, Moon, and Stars Began

From School Library Journal

Grade 6 Up—In this spare and staid retelling of a Tamaya Pueblo creation myth, the storyteller explains how the sun, moon, and stars first appeared: "A long time ago, the Animal People decided to make a journey up into our world, the Fourth World. Back then, where we lived in the underworld was called Shipap, or the Third World." When they arrive at journey's end, a humorous illustration displays just eyes amidst blackness and the animals cry, "There is no light in the Fourth World! What should we do?" Subsequently, Squirrel and Rabbit return to the Third World three times to gather warm coals that enable them to bring light to the sky; familiar trickster Coyote arrives just in time to grab the third batch of coals and toss it carelessly into the night sky to create the stars and constellations. References to two different worlds may confuse some children and the text is stiff, contrasting sharply with the more lively dialogue and playful interaction found in another Pueblo tale, Valerie S. Carey's Quail Song (Putnam, 1990). The animal figures in the illustrations are static in the style of petrography and are unlikely to engage children who are accustomed to more animated art. Teachers may want to use this story in their multicultural curriculum, although many will find its documentation inadequate. Libraries with large folklore collections might want to purchase it; smaller libraries will want to wait for a picture-book version that is better suited for children.—Kirsten Cutler, Sonoma County Library, CA Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Simple. Elegant. This is a beautifully illustrated book with an appealing tale based on a Santa Ana Pueblo legend about how the sun, moon, stars, and constellations came to be. Coyote, the wily trickster, creates chaos when he refuses to do what he is told and messes up the Animal People's specially placed Sky drawings, which were to created to help light the dark and scary Fourth World. Coyote's mess can still be seen today in star clusters and the Milky Way.The endearing lessons of this story center on responsibility, teamwork, and obedience. The tale can also inspire children to look up at the night sky for constellations. The book is a fantastic way to introduce world stories, observations, and diversity to your classes, both young and old. This is a great book to share along with Jerrie Oughton and Lisa Desimin's "How the Stars Fell Into the Sky," which gives an equally engaging, vibrantly illustrated tale that can be compared and contrasted to "Coyote and The Sky: How the Sun, Moon, and Stars Began." Comparison and Contrast activities help to develop students' critical thinking / reasoning.

Just a fabulous rendition of a story I have long heard.

Great books for both kids and adults!!!

This is a lovely connection to the natural world and to the mythology of the Native American culture. The charming, colorful illustrations and the mischievous text held the interest of my grandchildren (aged 3&4). We read the story in conjunction with attending a live storytelling session with the author at New York's Native American Museum and it was a wonderful way to extend the experience.

Thanks!

"Winner of the 2009 Lemkin Award, Institute for the Study of Genocide""Winner of the 2008 Best Book, Human Rights Section of the American Political Science Association""Rejali's approach is to track the different behaviors, trends and traditions in torture throughout history to see who influenced whom and what they did...Rejali, a leading expert on government interrogation techniques, reaches key conclusions. First, monitoring by human rights groups doesn't stop torture, it simply causes torturers to resort to techniques that don't scar...Second, most contemporary torture traditions were passed on like crafts from teacher to apprentice...Third, Rejali writes, a person being tortured is likely to say whatever he thinks his captors want to hear, making it one of the poorest methods of gathering reliable information."---Laurel Maury, Los Angeles Times"Torture and Democracy immediately lays claim to be the most compendious and the most rigorous treatment of the subject yet written. Saul Bellow used to say that we are constantly looking for the book it is necessary to read next. On torture, this is it...Torture and Democracy is the anatomy of sneaky. Rejali regales us with tales of every technique of torture known to man...Rejali's analysis of efficacy is exemplary: at once prudent and trenchant, historically alert and morally sentient."---Alex Danchev, Times Higher Education"[A] magisterial study of torture and how it has developed as a social and moral issue with a focus on developments through the last century."---Scott Horton, Harper's Magazine"An exhaustive study of...'clean tortures,' or tortures that leave no permanent scars. Electrotorture, water tortures, stress and duress positions, beating, noise, drugs and forced exercises all make an appearance. The book is a towering achievement, a serious work of social science on an urgent topic that is too frequently surrounded by assumption and myth. It should be read and disseminated widely...The book is devoted to exploding one myth in particular: that clean tortures can casually and reliably be traced to the ancients, or, failing that, to the Nazis. Rejali's provocative thesis is that most clean tortures were actually born in democracies, especially imperial Britain and France."---Michael O'Donnell, San Francisco Chronicle"Torture and Democracy is a much-needed attempt to put our discussions on a firmer historical and conceptual footing while showing us the realities of what torture is and what it does. Based on a decade of research and approximately 2,000 sources in 14 languages, Torture and Democracy is really several books in one. It is a methodical history of what Rejali calls 'clean' or 'stealth' torture (torture that leaves no marks) in the 20th century; a sociological examination of torture's relationship to democracies; a psychological exploration of torture's impact on societies and individuals; a practical consideration of torture's effectiveness; a philosophical musing on the ethics of torture and interrogation in general; an exhaustive cataloguing of tortures used throughout the ages; and what Rejali calls 'a reliable sourcebook' for those who speak out against torture anywhere."---Michael McGregor, The Oregonian"[Creates] what essentially amounts to an epidemiology of torture. Just as scientists were able to show how HIV traveled around the world by mapping the locatino and date of each outbreak of AIDS, Rejali similarly documents the global transmission of major torture techniquest by drawing up a chronology of their occurrence . . . Rejali's accomplishment--and it's a considerable one--is to lay out this vast amount of information to demonstrate patterns few had noticed before."---Brian Zabcik, American Lawyer"Documenting modern torture techniques, [Torture and Democracy] is both horrifying and compelling. The consequences of torture are always unpredictable and Rejali argues that torture fails when it's needed most--in last-minute, ticking bomb scenarios."---Karen J. Greenberg, Financial Times"Dozens of books about torture have been published over the last five years. But none compare to Torture and Democracy for its richly detailed comparative analysis, and its synthesis of historical, psychological, medical, forensic, sociological, and political information to explain what torture is, what it does to victims and perpetrators, and why and how it spreads. . . . Rejali has earned the right to speak authoritatively about the most important question of all: Does torture work? His answer, like his book, is profound, complex, and supported by a wealth of empirical detail."---Lisa Hajjar, Arab Studies Journal

"Darius Rejali has written a superb genealogy of modern torture. Meticulously researched and filled with surprising insights, Rejalis indictment derives its power from thoughtful analysis and deep historical grounding. It is the best book on the subject that I have encountered. No one should debate the merits of torture without having read it."--Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch"Darius Rejali has given the world an extraordinary work of scholarship and personal passion that no one wants to hear about but that everyone must learn about. Torture and Democracy exposes the core issues facing every nation whose deepest values of human dignity are defiled by its state-sanctioned 'violence workers.' Beyond platitudes, this pioneering expert descends into the torture dungeons around the world to reveal the strategies and tactics secretly used to break human will to resist. A vital book for anyone wanting to understand the whys and hows of torture being practiced today by our own government."--Philip Zimbardo, author of The Lucifer Effect: Understanding How Good People Turn Evil"Monumental. Definitive. Devastating."--Sidney Blumenthal"Torture and Democracy brings the fact of torture straight home to democratic societies--societies that are the most reluctant to acknowledge the presence of torture in their midst. Darius Rejali's theme is the appeal of stealth forms of torture in democracies, but he also illuminates the culture of disinformation, self-deluding euphemisms, and outright mythology that accompanies these kinds of torture. Rejali's research has been truly formidable. He has read more widely in more disciplines than any analyst of torture that I know of."--Edward Peters, author of Torture"This is a timely and extraordinarily important book, an unprecedented study of torture and its technologies, and of the relationship between torture and types of political systems. The research that went into this book is beyond impressive; it is thorough beyond belief. Torture and Democracy will become a reference for anyone who wants to understand torture. Darius Rejali is to be congratulated."--Martha Huggins, Tulane University"Torture and Democracy is a provocative, state-of-the-art consideration of what Rejali calls 'stealth' or 'clean' torture. He makes a powerful case that democracies tend to be laboratories for these forms of torture and that one of the unintended consequences of democratization is that torture, rather than being eliminated, becomes harder to identify and document."--Austin Sarat, Amherst College

This book has made for one of the longest and most difficult reads I've ever gone through, but Darius Rejali has really pulled off an incredible feat here. The sheer amount of research on display is very impressive. Throughout the course of the book, he details the origins of specific torture methods, why they exist, and what types of governments use them today (if at all). It helps put modern-day events like the Abu Ghraib and Guantánamo scandals in proper historical context and explains why it is that democracies like America now use torture methods that leave no physical marks. (In short, in democracies, human rights organizations and laws against torture have driven interrogators to use methods less prone to leaving evidence behind while totalitarian governments use physical scarring to terrify their targets.)The book also delves into the question of whether or not torture, examining several military conflicts from which reports emerged stating that torturing had produced useful intelligence. What is revealed, however, when the numbers are broken down, is that the number of innocent people tortured in order to find the one person on whom torture did work, is ridiculously high in every instance. For anyone interested in studying this awful subject and attempting to make sense of how we got where we are today in regards to it, this book is an essential read.

This book is by far the most complete and comprehensive source available on torture and issues related to torture. Rejali's scholarship is impeccable and Torture and Democracy is a must have for anyone who wishes to understand the history, causes and meanings of torture.

I bought this book in order to be able to shoot down any argument about why torture should be used, I wasn't disappointed. Though, it is not an easy read, so make sure to give the book the attention and breaks it deserves in order to digest all the information presented. It is dense but well worth the read.

Why are so many people, including high ranking people who should know better, so convinced that torture "works," and that it provides reliable intelligence? Do they have supporting data to back up this assertion, or is it just a gut feeling? Well, now we are just a little closer to tossing this bizarre view point to the trash heap of history. Darius Rejali, in his painstakingly researched book "Torture and Democracy," has investigated the records of numerous countries that conducted torture throughout the 20th century, including France during the Algerian uprising and the Germans during WWII. He has convincingly shown, with actual data and analysis, that torture is ineffective for intelligence gathering simply because it produces an avalanche of disinformation, making it almost impossible to separate any real intelligence from false leads. It is clear to me that Rejali did not begin his project fifteen years ago (prior to 9/11, BTW) with any preconceived notions that he then set out to prove. As he explains, he was actually trying to find out why so many countries, including democracies (though generally in secret), resort to the tactic. His initial thought was that maybe there is something to it, since so many countries repeatedly make use of the approach as an intelligence gathering tool. It was only after conducting years of exhaustive research, thoroughly catalogued in the book, that he realized that the countries who resort to the tactic do so out of ignorance and because they fail to think through what they are doing. And it turns out that many countries, even the Nazis in Germany, eventually figure out that the approach is counter-productive, and eventually revert back to more "traditional" police methods to gather intelligence. This was the case with the French in Algeria, who did not begin to meet with success in the city of Algiers until AFTER they abandoned torture as a policy. The bulk of the book consists of Rejali cataloguing the use of torture in dozens of countries around the world, including an explanation of the techniques and an explanation of which methods are used in which countries. At first, it makes for compelling reading, but the sheer exhaustiveness of the research, which Rejali had to present to make his case, is pretty depressing, and in truth, it's not necessary to read it all before you say - okay, okay, I get it, I get it, it doesn't work....For those who want to take a shortcut, the chapters toward the end of the book comprise the majority of Rejali's analysis, and it is possible to skim or skip the middle chapters since the evidence against torture is provided in such relentless and eventually nauseating detail. In other words, one could save a lot of time, if they accept the initial premise that torture is an ineffective tactic, by simply going straight to the two penultimate chapters toward the end - "What the Apologists Say" (which blows big holes in the so-called "Battle of Algiers argument"),and "Why Governments Don't Learn."I am convinced that the book should be required reading for all people in this country, both private and public citizens, who remain convinced that torture is an effective intelligence gathering tool. It should also serve as an antidote to those who have watched too many episodes of "24" and thus believe the "ticking time bomb" scenario is actually realistic. For my part, it is depressing that no one takes the time to think this through, and that a book like this is even necessary to convince people that torture is a bad idea. The truth is that, like myself, Rejali appears to be a utilitarian, who would condone the use of torture if it could actually be shown that it is an effective means to gather intelligence in a dire situation. However - it most definitely is not. As Rejali shows again and again, the fundamental fallacy of the "torture is effective" argument is that it presumes magical telepathic powers. How does one know with certainty that the suspect we have caught really does know anything about the ticking time bomb, or where the next terrorist strike will occur, or where the kidnapped little girl is located? We may suspect that he does, but what if it turns out that we're wrong? Undoubtedly he'll start "singing" something if we torture him - but now we'll waste vital time chasing false leads if it turns out he is the wrong guy. Here's a scenario to illustrate the point further. In Iraq a bomb goes off. People gather. US troops arrive. People scatter, including what appears to be a group of ten or so young men. They actually have nothing to do with each other, they just happened to have congregated on one side of the site together. The US authorities manage to grab five of them. Turns out that someone with magic telepathic powers would know that one of the five actually was a bad guy involved with the bombing. But our intrepid torturers don't know this. They start torturing all five of the men. All five subsequently start "singing" information. In the case of four of them, it is by definition all gibberish because they really were innocent bystanders who just ran when the US showed up. Now they most certainly will provide bits and pieces of rumors and stories they've heard around town that sounds like it might have some meaning because they're naming real people and places (of course they would - they're from there) but ultimately none of it has any utility. The one "bad guy" sings too. Half of what he says is gibberish - but some of it is actually real intelligence. (This, BTW - was the problem the French ran into in Algiers, which we have been facing in Baghdad and Afghanistan.) So I challenge all people who believe "torture works" to answer this one simple question: In the above scenario, how on earth are you going to differentiate the 10% real intelligence from the 90% that is gibberish? What magic powers are you going to use to do so? Until we develop mind-reading powers, we cannot be sure whether the person we are torturing even knows anything useful, but then, if we had those kind of powers, we wouldn't have to torture him in the first place - we could just read his mind.If only the real world worked as simply and neatly as it does in the fictional universe of "24."

A depressing although valuable book that shows how "clean" torture techniques--those that don't leave visible scars or physically incapacitate the victim--have been the hallmark of torturers in the military and police forces in democratic nations.Rejali documents the use of psychological torture, waterboarding and other clean methods by France, the UK, the United States and other non-totalitarian/non-authoritarian nations. In the western European countries it started with interrogations in colonies--the UK against the Mau Mau in Kenya and the insurgents in Malaysia during the "emergency" and the French in Vietnam and Algeria. Many of the oligarchs of Latin America took their methods from France. This is almost a reference book of "clean" torture history and usage with chapters the cover how attitudes and procedures evolved in local practice--cattle prods in Argentina, hooding and sleep deprivation in Northern Ireland, drugs in areas controlled by the United States. With chapters on complicit doctors, apologists for torture and evolving refinement of use of electricity, water and fear it is a grim but important book. The ray of light that shines through is the efficacy of local, national and international monitoring by the press, the judiciary and non-government organizations in staying the hand of torturers. Put simply, they can't afford to be exposed and caught which is why the stealth techniques have become characteristic of torture in open societies.

Black Confederates and Afro-Yankees in Civil War Virginia (A Nation Divided: Studies in the Civil War Era)

From Publishers Weekly

This exhaustively researched treatise will shatter some rose-tinted ideas about African American participation in the Civil War. Though original sources are incomplete and most written by whites, Jordan (Charlottesville and the University of Virginia in the Civil War) pieces together an astonishing portrait of slaves and free blacks in pre-and post-War Virginia. Of the 3.65 million blacks in the South, one in every six lived in Virginia, "a breeder state" where dealers boasted "Slavery is our business and business is good." By classifying blacks as Afro-Virginians, Afro-Yankees or Afro-Confederates, Jordan explores one of the War's most vexing questions: Why did some slaves and free blacks join the Confederate Army? Those "who boasted the loudest of their desire to fight Yankees," Jordan believes, "did so... in hopes of obtaining privileges within the confines of slavery." In fact, in Virginia the most revered slaves, body servants, did triumph by fighting Yankees-in 1924, that state provided for pensions to those body servants, hostlers, teamsters, cooks who "rendered service to the Confederacy." That $25 annual pension was paid to heirs as late as the 1950s. Yet perhaps most shocking is what Jordan calls the "Confederate paradox of humanity and inhumanity to blacks," like providing excellent medical care for enlisted men while making it legal to whip or execute slaves or free blacks for not showing proper respect, praying without permission or gathering in groups of more than five. Some slaves were allowed to purchase themselves, earn wages and own land, yet they could be lynched for "eyeball rape." "African-American history is not for the squeamish," Jordan says in his preface, and he is right. But Black Confederates and Afro-Yankees should be read by everyone, as a corrective to simplistic moralizing interpretations of the legacy of the Civil War. Photos. Review

Black Confederates and Afro-Yankees in Civil War Virginia is the first comprehensive study of Civil War Afro-Virginian history and culture. Through it we witness every aspect of black life: slave and free; rural and urban; homefront and battlefield; at work on plantations but also in munitions factories in Richmond; as wartime Union spies and as soldiers in the confederate army. Ervin Jordan has searched from Vermont to Texas and ferreted out forgotten letters, newspaper accounts of the time, oral narratives, speeches, and autobiographies. These primary research materials reveal how African-Americans contributed to the rise and fall of the Old South and show the variety of roles they played, from soldiering, teaching, and preaching to escaping, resisting, surviving, and building. Jordan explores such issues as the roles of free blacks and how they preserved their freedom in a slave society and became important members of their wartime communities; Union officers and enlisted men selling blacks to the North as house servants or military substitutes; and Robert E. Lee's personally freeing two hundred slaves during the war. He examines pension laws enacted on behalf of body servants, black women's self-determination, and the black family; sex and sexual racism, education and religion, runaway slaves and slave resistance; the legal system; and urban and plantation labor. Black Confederates and Afro-Yankees in Civil War Virginia presents one of the most compete pictures ever put together of African-American life (slave and free) in any state before, during, and immediately after the Civil War. --Midwest Book Review

Great Book!! Very important and easy to read book. Great for any historian!!

Good

I have not read the book fully

very good book that sheds some insight in to Black Confederate Soldiers. It was first published in 1995. As another reviewer stated the editing could have been better but other than that it was pretty good. This is a good place to start if you are looking to find out more about minorities in the Confederate army. There are better books out there on the subject but this is one is good if you get it at a good price.

Jordan is to be congratulated for his wide-ranging research and for taking steps to address historical issues that tread on politically correct toes. Unfortunately, this is not a finished work of history. It is perfunctorily written, and the chapters are poorly organized. It contains some excellent information, but it is not a book for the casual reader or even the casual Civil War buff. The antebellum South, and the Confederacy it spawned, was a complex place -- 9 million individuals, white and black, whose support of, opposition to, or acceptance of slavery and secession stemmed from a thousand different motives. If one can generalize about the slave South, it is to say that an attitude of white supremacy and black inferiority prevailed among its white citizens (as it did in the North); and that African-Americans, both slave and free, who lived in the slave states were subjected to a stifling degree of legal control by slave owners and state governments. Jordan goes over these two major points -- already familiar to students of the era -- in the first section of the book, "Uncertain Trumpet." The breadth of his research is commendable, but his technique of relating it is a bit numbing; a string of paragraphs, each a topic sentence and several redundant supporting anecdotes, is hardly historical analysis, much less a readable narrative. Some of the anecdotes are powerful -- e.g., a slave mother is haunted by the sound of her owner's piano, purchased with the proceeds from the sale of the slave's daughter -- and the author would have done better to concentrate on those, to examine their meaning more closely. The most controversial parts of the book are in the second half ("Give Us a Flag") and deal with black Virginians who served the Confederate cause either by taking up arms in its defense or voluntarily supporting the white soldiers who did. As have many other authors (including Confederate apologists who continue to deny that the Civil War and the Confederacy were essentially about slavery and racism), Jordan cites numerous anecdotes about black Virginians fighting with Rebel forces or serving as cooks, teamsters, servants, musicians, laborers, and in other noncombatant roles in the Confederate armies and government. He also supplies a fair amount of anecdotal evidence for a deep split among white Southerners over the propriety of arming slaves. Even as the Confederacy was sliding to destruction in the spring of 1865, many whites were adamantly opposed to the tardy steps taken by the Confederate congress to organize black fighting units. This ongoing opposition from all corners of the Confederacy -- not to mention the overall pattern of racism and subjugation of blacks in Civil War America -- calls into serious question the value of the anecdotal evidence often cited to "prove" widespread African-American support for the Southern cause, because it implies widespread white gratitude for this support. Examining this topic alone would have been a worthwhile book. As other reviewers here state, Jordan could have done a much more thorough job in testing this anecdotal evidence. There seems to be little question that some African-Americans supported the Confederate war effort, including military service, even before 1865. But to what extent? To what military effect? Did the arming of some slaves, or the volunteering of some blacks for military or quasi-military duty, have any widespread impact on the racial and political attitudes of white Southerners? Were these "Afro-Confederates" genuine Southern patriots, or infrequent exceptions to the repressive laws of racism and slavery, or simply black men and women who sought to ingratiate themselves with their white owners and the white community? These are questions that Jordan raises in this book, and that's a start. I hope he'll spend some time and a couple of other books trying to answer them.

It's not an impressive work. One portion of the book is a standard overview of slavery in Virginia, drawn from secondary or much-used primary sources. The second portion discusses alleged "black Confederates" in the South, and uncritically accepts every rumor, alleged sighting, and unsupported account of mostly mythical "black Confederates." Never once does the author engage any critical faculties in looking at such accounts, nor does he explain how it is that none of these "black Confederates" show up in the records of the Confederacy, as opposed to ostensible sightings recorded by Union war correspondents, etc.An old saying fits the book well: "What is good in it is not original, and what is original in it is not good."

The book is informative. I could have given it it three stars, as it sometimes seems to ramble. It is a fresh breath into an obscure, yet interesting topic of the Civil War that in my opinion, is wothy of future exploration. Based off of this freshness and a lack of exploration on this topic, it is a good read.

Jordan has penned a well researched and accurate portrayal of non-white sentiment during the War Between the States, most refreshing in this politically correct era when some want to revise history. Painting the Confederacy as an entirely racist nation and all CSA soldiers as slavery fighters not only does a disservice to the men in arms, but to the thousands of "Confederates of Color" who served the southern cause with weapons and support from 1861-1865. The rebel gray clothed many shades of skin, and Jordan has brought their contributions to history, as well as to the southern cause, to the attention of a new era. An excellent, well written addition to the historian's or buff's library.

Do you dread free writes? Are you, like me, a writer who comes out of a workshop where you are given a statement prompt with a blank piece of paper? Diane Lockward’s craft books are definitely for you, as well as for any other poet who wants to improve and enhance their craft. Although slanted toward those who write poetry, this book would also be useful for poetry lovers who want to understand the intricacies of the poetry they read. This is the third she’s published, and I truly believe that each one is more comprehensive than the one before. Lockward uses the word prompt in her book, but I prefer to call them exercises. She takes a poem, dissects it into what aspects of craft make that poem work, explains why it works, and gives clear instructions for us to follow. She also includes sample poems written to the instructions.I avoid free writes, frequently finding that the only thing I write is my grocery list. I have a bookcase full of poetry craft books, and Lockward’s are the ones I find the most useful. I rave about them to members of my writing critique group. Several of the poems I’ve written from Lockward’s books have been published.I could fill this review with cliches and hyperbole, but I know it would make Diane cringe. So let me end with this: Buy this book.

I’ve read all three of Lockward’s poetry handbooks. I’ve recommended them, given them as gifts, and rated them five stars apiece. Each book deserves about 50, because they’re more valuable than at least 10 other writing handbooks on the market. This is why it takes me a few months to read them, even though I do very few of the exercises. I treat them as reference books, and go back to them whenever I’m stuck.I prefer to read one section or two, then stop to digest them. Some of the techniques I’ve picked up have become part of my regular writing process. No one can believably claim writer’s block if they have one of Lockward’s books at hand. Simply reading the wonderful poems gives me ideas. I was lazy about writing during the holiday bustle, but still found myself putting this book down because I HAD TO WRITE.There’s something for everyone (probably because she gathers tips from everyone). I recommend it to beginner poets, experienced poets, and readers who enjoy reading poetry or want to understand it better. This is Poetry Appreciation at its finest. Now that I do have more poetry credentials, it’s a thrill to read tips from my favorite poets and think, “Exactly what I’d say.” A good poet never stops learning and growing, and Lockward helps us do that.

I have been writing poetry since elementary school, am now 71 and have had no formal poetry instruction. I I find this book, and the 2 that preceded it -The Crafty Poet I and II, the BEST books of "how-to"s for the poet. There are numerous and consistently excellent brief focused lessons by a variety of poets, beautiful examples and specific recommendations, written by the author, Diane Lockward, about how to approach a similar poem. I have so enjoyed doing many of the suggested exercises as I hone my craft. I highly recommend all three books.

The Practicing Poet: Writing Beyond the Basics is a fantastic book for poets at any stage in their writing career. Full of craft tips, contemporary poems, and writing prompts, the book is perfect for individuals or for use as a text in creative writing courses. Chapters lead writers through how to discover new material, working with line breaks, crafting surprise, and much more. There’s even a section on publishing your book of poetry, including ideas on manuscript organization, book promotion, and poetry reading protocol. The rich array of contributors is impressive as well and includes poets such as Ada Limon, Dorianne Laux, Patricia Smith, David Kirby, Alberto Rios, Molly Peacock, and Campbell McGrath to name just a few.

Delivered as advertised excellent condition and timely delivery.

This is not the first book I've purchased by Diane Lockward. Her personal poetry is stunning. However, something about "The Practicing Poet - Writing Beyond the Basics," stays with me in a different way. Perhaps it is the format itself which lends itself to a satisfying creative experience. I relished the "tips," from different poets. I read the poetry focused on a designated prompt and reread it again to see the link. I took my time and this is why everyone should read this book . . . it's about taking time to enjoy the work. It's about thinking. This is not a book to rip through--but rather it's a book that requires undivided attention and this is a good thing. It's a book about craft with proof of why a poem works. It's a book that every aspiring poet and writer should read. I'm keeping mine on my desk. It's a gem.

You can’t wait at your open window, expecting inspiration for a poem. Neither can you sit or walk around in circles hoping a poem will fall out of your pockets. You need to get started somehow. This book, “The Practicing Poet”, gives you ways to do just that. As it suggests, sometimes you just need to start, usually with something simple. Remember the quote in Jerry Maguire, “You had me at Hello”?Poets want only one thing, to immerse themselves in their next poem. And when they find a subject, instead of researching for the next decade, it’s best to just jump in. That’s where this book comes in. It gets you started putting down your next poem, quickly. The book teems with tips and prompts to help you do this. One tip is to “borrow” from others, taking an idea or image, reshaping it, making it yours. As Clark Gable said in “Gone with the Wind”, You should be kissed and often, and by someone who knows how.” It’s important to learn from the best. Get started. Read this book.

Diane Lockward’s The Practicing Poet is an inspiration to the poet. Whether one is emerging or experienced, the craft tips, writing prompts, and sample poems offer a reliable muse and mentor. As soon as I got my book copy, I began a writing marathon, using the sections as springboards for my new work. The Practicing Poet is another fine book from the same lineage as The Crafty Poet and The Crafty Poet II. I am so grateful for this wonderful book.

A monumental and newly revised work on the war of 1812. Mr. Hickey has spent years writing on the topic. Well done, comprehensive, and riveting history at its finest. If you need only one book on that war, this is the book to get. I'm glad it was revised, and the author gives you the total package here. A true classic of history meant for scholars and the general public alike. The war of 1812 is often overlooked in teaching American history. It should not be. It truly forged America on the world stage. Great heroic tales and epic battles were fought during this brief and nasty conflict. We can still draw valuable lessons from that time.

I ordered this book because of a school book report. I knew nothing about the war of 1812 before going into this. Now i can at least say i know a little bit. It was a rather dense book, but it was interesting. The author jumps around with topics which i find works with history, as it keeps the reader interested. He would touch on the politics of the time, what newspapers were saying, and battles. It was a very detailed book and you can tell it took a while for the author to craft. All the sources seem legit. Over all it was a great read. I gave it four stars because at times it was dense, but overall great.

This book was compiled based upon excellent research. It is, in my opinion, the most thorough coverage of the War of 1812. I first purchased the initial copy of this book back in the late 1980s. (In fact, that copy was purchased from the Chicago Historical Society bookstore and is a signed copy.) This book is a good update to that one.All the major events of the War of 1812 are covered, not just the military actions which have three chapters of coverage. Yes, the actions in Congress, the dissent of the Federalists, the Baltimore riots, the Hartford meeting (when the New England Federalists came together initially to discuss secession from the Union due to this war) are all covered. All the military actions are covered although some of them are given short shrift in my opinion. This is especially true of the military actions in the Old Northwest (Ohio, Indiana, Michigan and Illinois) which are covered very quickly. For example, Zachary Taylor's and unit's defense of a fort in Indiana are given one sentence; Fort Sandusky defense is given a paragraph; and the Fort Meigs defense are given a couple of paragraphs. The author spends a lot more time on the naval actions, including the privateers, which are an interesting element of this book, and actions on Lake Erie, Lake Champlain and the frigate actions (e.g. USS Constitution). I guess arguably these are probably considered more important to the final result, but the author also spends chapters on the actions of the US Congress, and related events. It would have been good if more time was spent on the Old Northwest events - and maybe a new book should be written on this alone - a suggestion to this or other authors. In spite of this one criticism, I due recommend this book for anyone interested in US History. After all, in spite of the fact that this is "a forgotten conflict", many important events came from this conflict including the creation of our national anthem, the Star Spangled Banner (the actual flag at Fort McHenry in Baltimore is housed in the Smithsonian's American History museum), and the only time that our capital was taken with the White House and Congress burned to a shell. This book, in my opinion, has the best overall coverage of the War of 1812 - it is most thorough and best researched book on this war.

Provides great insight into a war that I have heard about since childhood but knew so very little about. The story reinforces what a miracle it was that this country ever survived its first century. If you like history of our country this book will fascinate you with all the complexities our fore fathers had to work through to truly separate from England.

So boring. 95% of book is the politics. I thought the author would have more on the battles

The story of this war has been badly bruised by so many historians. At 80, with 7 years of university education under my belt, I cannot believe that I could know so little about something so significant. Hickey's book tells a true story at the pace of a riveting novel. If you find yourself yawning you might want to check your pulse!

The book is okay, but it contains significant details on the political sequences that happened in Congress during the war. If you are interested in that, it is right up your alley. For example, 6 pages are spent on the Battle of New Orleans whereas 23 are spent on the Hartford Convention in New England.
