This book deserves a wide reading. Its central lesson, as that of the more popular series on urban legends, is this: Don't believe everything you hear (or see) regarding the origins of words and phrases. I learned from this book that there were (a) false origins; things I thought I knew but didn't; (b) words whose origin I correctly understood, but about which others are mistaken, and (c) words whose origins I didn't know (and was thus unaware that others held false opinions about). Both humbling and instructive is category (a). Included here for me is "Ring around the Rosie," which I have read in countless reputable texts started its career as a sort of macabre humor for children singing and dancing their way through Europe's 14th century plague. And, equally unsettling, was the realization that the Chevy "NOVA" was not a botched marketing campaign by GM in Mexico, and that a guy named Crapper did not in fact invent the toilets we daily flush. At least, I got "google" right. This is a well-written, easily digested romp through the history of words misunderstood by many. It underscores the continuing importance of scepticism, perhaps especially in this, the information age.

Have you heard that Eskimos have 500 words for "snow"? What does the international distress signal "SOS" mean? Do you know what an "aptronym" is? Have you noticed that some nautical enthusiasts attribute a maritime origin to nearly every word or phrase? This observation prompted one participant of an online discussion group to use the acronym "CANOE" to mean the "Conspiracy to Attribute Nautical Origins to Everything"! You'll discover that many etymologies you thought you "knew," you really didn't know at all. This little 200-page book was just great fun and most enlightening to read. I've referred to it often in my university communication classes -- a great resource for anyone interested in the origins and use of English words and phrases -- well researched and well written. Kudos to author David Wilton!

I sent copies to each of my many grandchildren - and then I actually read it and discovered that I could do as well on my own.

Got this as the Kindle sample, and became so hooked I went for the whole thing. After the second time I brought up something explored in this book in everyday conversation, I knew it was worth buying.The most interesting aspect, to me, was seeing how having old media (and especially newspapers) digitized into searchable format has significantly changed the currently accepted origins of words and phrases.Easy to pick up and put down as a background book, while maintaining overall themes through the chapters.

Oddly dull for such a fascinating subject. Not really well put together. Seems cheap and unreliable. Poor print job. Okay.

I admit to being a word geek. I love the picky nonsense of grammar (and the huge fights that result from it) but most of all, I love a good etymology. Mr. Wilton has done his homework here and it shows. His history is good and his reasoning quite persuasive. I don't know that I've stayed up til the wee smalls reading the origins of common words and phrases very often, but it was definitely worth it for this book. Great fun even for the non-geeky and the simply curious.

Starts off interesting, but eventually grows boring, as he shoots down word-myth after word-myth using essentially the same argument each time -- the word appears in the record before the story in the myth allegedly took place. Even more disappointing is the realization that over half of his supporting citations are to the Oxford English Dictionary, which seems rather lazy.

The book is engaging reading if you are interested in words and their origins. I am not familiar with all of the "urban legends" and enjoy learning new ones is fun. Thanks to the author for his detail and easy to read writing style.Word Myths: Debunking Linguistic Urban Legends

She writes the truth about porn in America and is panned by the press and reviewers. Seems that she did a service to all in writing on a topic that is troubling and damaging to people. Panning her book puts the media and critics on target as supporting porn. Do we know what gutter their minds are in? Her book needs a reissue. Maybe with a different cover. The porn topic has not gone away. It is insidiously available. And just as damaging to humans no matter how humans will rationalize the problem. Be informed. Get the book.

This was a very well written book that was hard to put down. Pamela Paul did a ton of research and covered absolutely every reason of why porn is bad from a non religious viewpoint and gave examples of how it destroys our relationships, our marriages, and even when you think about, our humanity. Bottom line: Porn objectifies women and also supports the use of violence in a place it doesn't belong...

If anyone has a problem with porn this book is your way to a healthy life again. With it's rather frank and vivid descriptions one can not ignore the devastating realities of the porn world and how it affects society as a whole. Great research and a very well written book. Thank you Pamela Paul for telling it as it is and hopefully opening closed eye's.

Being a muslim doctor I've always wondered about the effects that such a 'disease' has on the human mind and soul. Verily what Ms.Pamela has written is a very important book for everybody who wants to guard himself from this vice and from this dreadful sin knowing now how it ruins ones state of mind. To me personally,it finally provided some objective data which I can now present to my patients who suffer from such disorders and to everybody around me who may suffer from it. It really is a worth-reading book.

Interesting book.

I read this book in the midst of a relationship with a man who has a problem with pornography. I initially bought it, thinking it might give me some insight into the problems we were having but I had no idea how profoundly it would change how I saw every area of my life. After reading this book non-stop for two days, I felt like I had been living in a fun house for the past 10 years and had only now realized it. In the parts of the book where it talks about relationships, I saw my relationship with my boyfriend for the first time. I felt like the blinders had been taken off of me, and all the things that had always bothered me about our relationship started to make sense.I am not surprised that many men are defensive and angry about this book - that was the same response I got from my boyfriend when I told him what I was learning.I broke up with my boyfriend soon after reading this book. This book has changed my life, and I thank Pamela for writing it.

This is an amazing book. It truly depicts how our society has become so accepting about porn. Which can become such huge problem for our future generations to come. Even in present day it is a big problem and not enough is being done to solve the problem. One reason is that porn has become a huge industry and power that very few people are willing to deal with this problem of porn being so easily accessible for anyone to view it. This book gives a lot of information about how porn has become part of modern culture and also give ideas to how deal with this problem.

I needed to understand a man's need and/or desire for porn and the impact it has on others. Very informative book!

Indeed, the only reason I was able to complete it despite the protest of my arthritic hands and aging eyes was because it is unquestionably absolutely enthralling to a person with my specific interests.Those interests include theology and the incredible injustices which dogma-driven society has perpetrated against women, homosexuals, Jews, and others. This book touches on all these aspects, and many more. As the plot summary indicates, Helen Watt, an aging British historian and expert in Jewish studies, is invited by a former student to assist in the evaluation of some manuscripts found during the renovation of a house in a London suburb. Helen, suffering from Parkinson Disease, needs help in studying what she realizes is a treasure-trove of documents, and calls upon a colleague to recommend a post-graduate student to assist. Enter Aaron Levy, a young American secular Jew who has run into a roadblock on his own research attempting to find a “Jewish Connection” in the writings Shakespeare. Helen and Aaron find their collaboration both uneasy and deeply rewarding.Further dramatic tension is provided by the fact that Helen’s ploy of having the college (from which she is about to retire) acquire the documents for conservation and archiving immediately raises the specter of academic competitiveness. It soon becomes obvious that the papers include the writing of Ester Velasquez, the ward of the blind Rabbi Moseh HaCoen Mendes, a Portuguese Jew. The existence of a female scribe writing in 17th Century London just before plague and then fire decimated the city is remarkable enough. However, as Helen and Aaron continue to delve into Ester’s writings an incredible back-story emerges. This woman was not only a scribe, but a philosopher as well, determined to connect with some of the great – and, in the opinion of most other people of that era heretical – thinkers of her time. As the story weaves back and forth between Ester’s traumas and those of Helen and Aaron as they seek to discover the reality of who this woman was and what she really represented (before being “scooped” by other investigators), great depth and richness of thought evolves.As mentioned in my opening comments, this is not a book I could recommend to someone seeking light or trivial reading. However, it is profound, fascinating and deeply engaging for anyone who is concerned with the fundamental issues Rachel Kadish so brilliantly addresses through the words and thoughts of her extraordinary characters.

There are long passages in this book, letters written by Ester to the philosophers of her day, in contemplation of the likely impossibility of the existence of God. At one point, Aaron Levy, the present-day scholar, wonders if he is even able to understand her missives.And this is my problem with this good book. The writing was beautiful, but dense and often cryptic; I sometimes had trouble understanding it, and many of the letters and scenes went on for too long.And yet I highlighted 27 excerpts, whether for the beauty of the writing or its resonance.On the very first page, describing Helen Watt: "Hope against reason: an opiate she'd long abandoned." What great characterization. As was the subtle yet plainspoken paragraph alerting us that Watt is very ill. The writing was so beautiful at times, I read it aloud to my husband, savoring the work of a true craftsman.The story progresses along three lines: that of Ester Velasquez, who lives in London, c. 1660; and of the modern-day scholars Watt and Levy. One theme of the book could be "how will you use your life? Will you live it fully or squander it?"-- in self-containment (Watt); the cowardice of the late-maturer (Levy); or by accepting cultural repression of women (Velasquez).As Levy learns about Velasquez having to hide her intellect, and the degree to which she suffers isolation because of her mind, his understanding grows in regard to the woman he loves, and women in general. This is a coming-of-age story. Levy is twenty five, beautiful, gifted with women, and stuck. He's unhappy and unsure of himself.Watt, gravely ill but persevering at the unlocking of the mystery of Ester, also examines her own life, with a lengthy flashback to when she was a young woman in love. Her fear of that love shaped her entire life, and it's only at the end and through her work with Levy that she achieves clarity in this regard.So, good character arcs, incredibly rich historical details, lots of good in this book, but overall, too long, opaque, and subtle for me. My apologies to the author, who must be a gifted scholar herself to have completed this work.

An amazing story, told through three individuals, in three times, but so connected. While parts are difficult to understand, those that were supposed to be written in the seventeenth century, the meanings still come through, or at least the wonderful minds of those times. I would reccomend this to anyone interested in those times in England, and of Portugal, and their Jews, but also in the coming of age of two individuals, one a young man and the other, an aging women professor, neari ng retirement

The story begins when a young couple inherit a 17th century manor in Richmond, a suburb of London. During renovations, a treasure trove of 17th century documents are discovered written in Portuguese, Hebrew, Castilian. and Latin. A crusty, very British female professor and a cocky Jewish American pre-doctoral student are asked to authenticate and translate the documents. In chapters that alternate between the 21st and the 17th centuries, the reader shares in both the life of painstaking historical research and document conservation and the hardships of the diaspora Jewish community returning to England at the behest of Cromwell. We dwell in the home of a learned, saintly rabbi, blinded during the Inquisition who is summoned to London to re-build the once exiled Jewish community. Who is his scribe and what is the importance of these documents to the past, the present and the future? How does an historian distinguish between fact and his/her own interpretations of people and events? This novel is a very dense read, packed with historical information., but the twists and turns in the narrative will dispel any pre-conceived notions the reader might form. Be warned that this is a difficult book to put down and certainly whets the appetite of the reader to explore more about the 17th century .

A former National Geographic staff member, CATHERINE HERBERT HOWELL has written more than a dozen books and contributed to dozens of others, including the landmark first edition of National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America, now the best-selling birding guide in North America. This is one hefty and impressive book, filled with a vast array of bird photographs, all from the National Geographic magazine. There are plenty of historic pictures, of interest to those interested in conservation as well as those with nostalgia for National Geographic. The text is brief. It explains the content and context of the photos and the time that the photos were taken. There is a definite, though understated, focus on conservation, overall.The photography is quite varied. Of course, the pictures from the earliest years of the magazine are of that quant, historic look. Throughout the book, we are offered comparisons of then and now – looking at similar photographs taken at very different times. Other photos focus on nature, raw in tooth and claw. Many photos are just glorious looks at birds doing what birds do. There is such a variety of birds in here, from around the world, many in brilliant colors or with unique plumage. Most are wild birds, but we get an occasional look at domestic birds as well.This book is most impressive and I highly recommend it as a magnificent coffee table book or gift. For those looking for something similar, but a bit less pricey, take a look at National Geographic’s Birds of the Photo Ark. The Splendor of Birds looks at both birds and National Geographic, while Birds of the Photo Ark is really just about the birds. But that’s JustMe.

Just so you know, this 9th edition is almost exactly the same as 10th edition. My friend has the 10th edition and we compared them, all the questions are the same, the only difference is pictures and few words are changed. If you are looking for the 10th edition, don't bother waste your money. Anyway, delivery is fast, book is used but in good condition. What else can I ask for at this low price?

Arrived in a timely manner. Exceptional condition - like new. Comprehensive "Prerequisites" section for those not having recently studied algebra. Excellent as a reference or for home schooling. Definitely recommend this book. Chapter Eight is does an excellent of introducing sequences, infinite series, and probability. Also must complement the sellers for an excellent product at a mind-shattering reasonable price.

Clear thorough explanations, Many examples. Easy to follow, answer key in the back to check your work (odd number problems). Obviously, 1 star docked because the even numbers were not given in the answer key.

The book itself is great. The explanations are mostly clear, and the problems definitely make everything even clearer. Great procedural and application problems.

Bought for a high school honors Algebra 2 class

The book offers plenty of examples and practice to help learn how to work the problems. What I like best is that there is an app that shows the steps to each odd numbered practice problem so you can see exactly what steps to take.
