I was blown away when I read this book. And then I got angry. Really, really angry. This book makes complete sense to me as to one of the main reasons why people are so sick in this world. We have completely gone against nature and we are reaping the rewards of this in the forms of illness, disease and death. And at this point, I am not so sure we don't deserve it.This quote in the book is very fitting:"Illnesses do not come upon us out of the blue. They are developed from small daily sins against Nature. When enough sins have accumulated, illnesses will suddenly appear."~HippocratesAfter reading this book I immediately started earthing/grounding naturally in my backyard. I also ordered an earthing kit (half sheet and mat, cords and testers) through Earthing Dot Com so I could do it at night as well. (You can by the earthing kit on Amazon as well but after telling several people about it, it seems the kit does not always come with the book or directions like it does when you buy directly from their website.)I have had insomnia for about a year, ever since I moved into a house where there was a Smart Meter on my back bedroom wall. Not sure if this has something to do with it or not, but if you read all the horrific health complaints people are having regarding smart meters, it is probably the likely culprit.Immediately when I started grounding myself during the day and night my insomnia seems to have completely disappeared. I slept nearly 9 hours the first night I had it which is unreal to me. It only has been a little over a week now of using the earthing products. But I feel great. Instead of only getting 5-6 hours of restless sleep, I have been getting 7-8 of really deep/good sleep. Yes, I realize it could be a placebo effect. But I highly doubt it at this point. Time will tell if it is or isn't. I have more energy in the day now as well. My brain is working better. I was starting to develop memory problems due to being sleep deprived. I am not noticing that anymore. I am amazed.I do believe this is one of the best health books ever written. Earthing is probably right up there with eating a good diet when it comes to our health. I cannot recommend this book enough. And I also recommend watching the documentaries that were done by the same people who wrote the book called "Grounded" and "Heal For Free". Right now you can watch "Grounded" on Youtube for free.Maybe one day people will truly wake up to the dangers of EMFs from all of our electronics including the horrible Smart Meters we have had forced down our throats by the NWO and the electric companies. A class action lawsuit is far overdo. And maybe, just maybe one day people will realize how far disconnected from the earth we have really become. Our stupidity is our own demise. And unfortunately we are taking the animals and the planet down with us.

My 5th purchas! My family had HUGE health changes due to earthing. Sleeping better/less pain on their grounding sheets and computer mats. Less peeing in the middle of the night. I make the sheets for them from Argen mesh fabric lessemf.com, (3 ft is good for 2 people. Then duct tape it to the mattress cover. Put fitted sheet over that. In 3.5 mos my fibro is 90% better. Husband’s back pain due to crushed vertebrae is in 35% less pain after 2 wks sleeping on the sheet. He became a Chiro to help his pain, but NOTHING worked like this does. A chronic snorer w/ some sleep apnea now he sometimes doesn't snore now. The you-tube movie: "Grounded - the documentary" is a MUST. Get a fit bit and see how your sleep changes.

I haven’t slept well in over 10 years. My sleep quality has consistently gotten worse since I finished College and got a job. I used to go outside all the time and many times barefoot since I lived near a beach. Sometimes it would be so nice outside that I would fall asleep and wake up the next morning outside. I never had any problems with sleep during my younger years but after graduating, getting a job and trying to work my way up the ladder I became ill. I no longer lived near a beach, I didn’t have the time to go outside and my commute was a total of four hours every day. I slept maybe four to five hours a day and started to become depressed and easily agitated. I tried everything from hypnosis, music, pills, diet, etc but nothing worked to assist my sleep. During my desperation I came across this book and immediately started to ground myself while reading. I noticed my sense of wellbeing and energy levels drastically improved after just one hour. I finished this book over the weekend and was compelled to purchase their electrodes and blankets. My first night with the electrodes and blanket I slept for the entire 8 hour period and didn’t wake up until my alarm went off. It was like magic. After 4 weeks I had a doctor appointment and my doctor already could see a change in my appearance as I had lost a few pounds and he said I had more color. I didn’t have those circles under my eyes either. My weight, blood pressure, glucose were all now normal when they were just very high 3 months ago. My friends and family have been absolutely shocked with my transformation over this past month. They say I’m like a brand new person from not only my appearance but with being more social and positive. I just informed them about this book and how humans have been depriving themselves of “Vitamin G” aka grounding. This book covers everything you could want to know from the most current science about why and how grounding works for things like sleep, diabetes, weight loss, heart disease, athletes, etc. It gives anecdotal experiences and double blind peer reviewed studies in credible journals. I just couldn’t put this book down after I started finding out all the health benefits. They cover all the new inventions created from shoes, to sheets and electrodes so everyone can become grounded even if they don’t go outside. Lastly, it talks about the grounding revolution and how it’s opened the door for entrepreneurs to make more tools and inventions to become grounded 24/7 and how this will be worldwide and eventually be used by hospitals as a form of treatment. I look forward to the next book written by these authors and future studies as well. I will continue to self-assess my own physical and mental improvements and promote grounding to every person I meet even if they think I’m crazy. My daily life is now walking barefoot as much as possible and using the most up to date products to keep me grounded while indoors. I feel weird writing this. Grounding works. It really does but I feel awkward telling people about it. They look at you like you've lost your mind. How can connecting with the earth heal your body. It sounds too simple, too easy, too good to be true. But I have to tell you it works to reduce your inflammation which is what causes so much of my pain. My osteoarthritis pain has diminished substantially, my gums are less swollen (as noticed by my dentist), and I heal very quickly from minor injuries. I know this sounds stupid and I can't help how it sounds. But if you are in pain, you have nothing to lose. It doesn't require health insurance, a prescription from a doctor, or any difficult treatments. Just connect with the earth and it will provide energy to heal you. As a professor who teaches Engineering Economics, I give my highest praise to the Newnan textbook. I have used various editions of this book in my graduate classes for 20 years. It is clearly written and provides excellent examples and real-world problems that truly attract and keep student attention. It is not calculus-based, and this is a distinct advantage for students not well-grounded in calculus.The rental program offered by Amazon is a terrific deal. You can typically rent a text for $25 for the semester, then return it in good condition once the semester is over. I teach at a public university where many students are financially challenged. Renting a text is a marvelous solution for the cost conscious. It doesn't get better than that!To test the rental process, I ordered a rental of this text and it came in timely. No issues with its return at the end of the semester either.

If you must buy this book for a course, you don't have a choice but to get it, of course. But as far as the content, this book does not adequately explain the concepts, and (even worse) does not have enough examples. The answers to end-of-chapter review problems are sometimes given...and sometimes not! You are in a very, very bad situation if you end up with a poor professor and this book, because you will not be able to "teach yourself" the material, as the text does not have enough detailed examples and doesn't have answers to the practice problems. I don't even understand the purpose of having practice problems if there are no answers.Overall, I cannot recommend the book, because it is not a sufficient resource for learning the material. You will find yourself relying very heavily on outside material.

This book makes hundreds of mistakes and the answer document is worse. The problem is that it is a Math 112 perspective on finances that fails to clearly and logically define the problems it sets out to solve.

This book is very specific in what it aims to teach, and assumes that you know how to do basic word problems (which, you should). The information in this book is very concise, and filled with helpful examples rather than detailed explanations. It may not be super descriptive in terms of reasoning, but this subject is best taught by example anyways. The main thing you need to know in order to make this book work for you is how to dissect a word problem. And for engineers who think they don't need economics...I feel sorry for whoever hires you on accident.EDIT, after taking course: The later chapters are a little more vague, since they assume that you remember everything you learned before. The problems get much more complex than at the beginning, and the book does little to help you decipher the text. In the end, it is left for you to interpret the text. Also, it is a good idea to start dabbling with Excel, since the later chapters rely heavily on its usage.

Excellent book for folks taking classes in engineering economics. It provides problems and easy to follow solutions. I highly recommend it except for the price. I wished it were cheaper.

The book is in slightly worse shape then I'd like. One page is almost completely ripped out of the book. There might be more but I haven't made it that far in the book yet.

The cost of the paperback Indian version is perfect and should be a model for all text books. I have a difficult time understanding the examples but the text and explanations are helpful and clear. The paperback is in black and white but personally that doesn't affect anything.

Putting aside how much I hated this class, the book was actually pretty good. Not as user-friendly as it could have been. You can tell it was written by engineers and proof read by engineers. Very dense.

Pele is my Childhood hero. As a footballer and a striker, I had perfected and improved my skills by learning from the greatest player in the world. Like Pele, goal-scoring was so natural to me. As a young boy, I bought his book "My Life And The Beautiful Game". I have forgotten, most of the things I read, because it's been a long time. But buying his autobiography, brought some of the memories back. It is so good to know not only his football life but the other aspects of his life. I really enjoyed the book. It makes me to mirror my own life and to remember some aspects of my own life, that I left out in my own book "Ex-Football Player Touched By The Fire Of God". I did that intentionally because, my focus is about lifting up the name of Jesus. I recommend this book to everyone, especially upcoming young boys and girls, who will be famous one day. There is a lot to learn from his autobiography. He will remain the greatest sportsman in my mind because of his humility and how he conducted himself in the field of play. I love him. Ex-Football Player Touched by the Fire of God: In the Flame of His Glory

The book is interesting. Pele is interesting. However, this book might not be the best choice for under 14+ age range. I ordered this for my 6th grade soccer fanatic because he had to do a report on someone who wrote an autobiography. While it was filled with lots of facts and information, it was difficult reading. The language and story line was tedious. I would recommend it but not for the younger reader. There are other Pele autobiographies that would be easier reading.

Great autobio. I could easily have given a 5-star if his life descriptions and stories after football were as creative and mesmerising as his stories and descriptions before, in and during footballing. The concluding chapters were lame after fame, the great force and momentum of the whole story seemed to grind to a halt after his last word cup appearance. But my read of the book during the 2014 Brazil Work Cup added great expectations and the book, just like the host country's great start fizzled to disappointment towards the end. But those of you out there wishing to read this I recommend and being different from me you may enjoy the book right through. One thing is certain though--Pele is one of the greatest sporting icons and, for me, soccer's greatest star yet and for him I'll give a 5-star anyy day.

I found "PELE" a great book. it's often a pleasure to read autobiography of such great player of the past, you will learn so much. Pele talks about his young life before stardom, his whole career with santos and the Seleçao, the story around his 1,000th goal, his life after his football career and so many more. I enjoyed the book!!

I owned this book prior to this purchase. Love the contents! Pele is to me the greatest football player of all time...other greats come in second!

This book deserves a wide reading. Its central lesson, as that of the more popular series on urban legends, is this: Don't believe everything you hear (or see) regarding the origins of words and phrases. I learned from this book that there were (a) false origins; things I thought I knew but didn't; (b) words whose origin I correctly understood, but about which others are mistaken, and (c) words whose origins I didn't know (and was thus unaware that others held false opinions about). Both humbling and instructive is category (a). Included here for me is "Ring around the Rosie," which I have read in countless reputable texts started its career as a sort of macabre humor for children singing and dancing their way through Europe's 14th century plague. And, equally unsettling, was the realization that the Chevy "NOVA" was not a botched marketing campaign by GM in Mexico, and that a guy named Crapper did not in fact invent the toilets we daily flush. At least, I got "google" right. This is a well-written, easily digested romp through the history of words misunderstood by many. It underscores the continuing importance of scepticism, perhaps especially in this, the information age.

Have you heard that Eskimos have 500 words for "snow"? What does the international distress signal "SOS" mean? Do you know what an "aptronym" is? Have you noticed that some nautical enthusiasts attribute a maritime origin to nearly every word or phrase? This observation prompted one participant of an online discussion group to use the acronym "CANOE" to mean the "Conspiracy to Attribute Nautical Origins to Everything"! You'll discover that many etymologies you thought you "knew," you really didn't know at all. This little 200-page book was just great fun and most enlightening to read. I've referred to it often in my university communication classes -- a great resource for anyone interested in the origins and use of English words and phrases -- well researched and well written. Kudos to author David Wilton!

I sent copies to each of my many grandchildren - and then I actually read it and discovered that I could do as well on my own.

Got this as the Kindle sample, and became so hooked I went for the whole thing. After the second time I brought up something explored in this book in everyday conversation, I knew it was worth buying.The most interesting aspect, to me, was seeing how having old media (and especially newspapers) digitized into searchable format has significantly changed the currently accepted origins of words and phrases.Easy to pick up and put down as a background book, while maintaining overall themes through the chapters.

Oddly dull for such a fascinating subject. Not really well put together. Seems cheap and unreliable. Poor print job. Okay.

I admit to being a word geek. I love the picky nonsense of grammar (and the huge fights that result from it) but most of all, I love a good etymology. Mr. Wilton has done his homework here and it shows. His history is good and his reasoning quite persuasive. I don't know that I've stayed up til the wee smalls reading the origins of common words and phrases very often, but it was definitely worth it for this book. Great fun even for the non-geeky and the simply curious.

Starts off interesting, but eventually grows boring, as he shoots down word-myth after word-myth using essentially the same argument each time -- the word appears in the record before the story in the myth allegedly took place. Even more disappointing is the realization that over half of his supporting citations are to the Oxford English Dictionary, which seems rather lazy.

The book is engaging reading if you are interested in words and their origins. I am not familiar with all of the "urban legends" and enjoy learning new ones is fun. Thanks to the author for his detail and easy to read writing style.Word Myths: Debunking Linguistic Urban Legends

She writes the truth about porn in America and is panned by the press and reviewers. Seems that she did a service to all in writing on a topic that is troubling and damaging to people. Panning her book puts the media and critics on target as supporting porn. Do we know what gutter their minds are in? Her book needs a reissue. Maybe with a different cover. The porn topic has not gone away. It is insidiously available. And just as damaging to humans no matter how humans will rationalize the problem. Be informed. Get the book.

This was a very well written book that was hard to put down. Pamela Paul did a ton of research and covered absolutely every reason of why porn is bad from a non religious viewpoint and gave examples of how it destroys our relationships, our marriages, and even when you think about, our humanity. Bottom line: Porn objectifies women and also supports the use of violence in a place it doesn't belong...

If anyone has a problem with porn this book is your way to a healthy life again. With it's rather frank and vivid descriptions one can not ignore the devastating realities of the porn world and how it affects society as a whole. Great research and a very well written book. Thank you Pamela Paul for telling it as it is and hopefully opening closed eye's.

Being a muslim doctor I've always wondered about the effects that such a 'disease' has on the human mind and soul. Verily what Ms.Pamela has written is a very important book for everybody who wants to guard himself from this vice and from this dreadful sin knowing now how it ruins ones state of mind. To me personally,it finally provided some objective data which I can now present to my patients who suffer from such disorders and to everybody around me who may suffer from it. It really is a worth-reading book.

Interesting book.

I read this book in the midst of a relationship with a man who has a problem with pornography. I initially bought it, thinking it might give me some insight into the problems we were having but I had no idea how profoundly it would change how I saw every area of my life. After reading this book non-stop for two days, I felt like I had been living in a fun house for the past 10 years and had only now realized it. In the parts of the book where it talks about relationships, I saw my relationship with my boyfriend for the first time. I felt like the blinders had been taken off of me, and all the things that had always bothered me about our relationship started to make sense.I am not surprised that many men are defensive and angry about this book - that was the same response I got from my boyfriend when I told him what I was learning.I broke up with my boyfriend soon after reading this book. This book has changed my life, and I thank Pamela for writing it.

This is an amazing book. It truly depicts how our society has become so accepting about porn. Which can become such huge problem for our future generations to come. Even in present day it is a big problem and not enough is being done to solve the problem. One reason is that porn has become a huge industry and power that very few people are willing to deal with this problem of porn being so easily accessible for anyone to view it. This book gives a lot of information about how porn has become part of modern culture and also give ideas to how deal with this problem.

I needed to understand a man's need and/or desire for porn and the impact it has on others. Very informative book!

“The Weight of Ink” by Rachel Kadish lives up to its title in many ways. At 560 tightly-written pages of magnificent prose, this novel can under no circumstances be called “light reading”. Indeed, the only reason I was able to complete it despite the protest of my arthritic hands and aging eyes was because it is unquestionably absolutely enthralling to a person with my specific interests.Those interests include theology and the incredible injustices which dogma-driven society has perpetrated against women, homosexuals, Jews, and others. This book touches on all these aspects, and many more. As the plot summary indicates, Helen Watt, an aging British historian and expert in Jewish studies, is invited by a former student to assist in the evaluation of some manuscripts found during the renovation of a house in a London suburb. Helen, suffering from Parkinson Disease, needs help in studying what she realizes is a treasure-trove of documents, and calls upon a colleague to recommend a post-graduate student to assist. Enter Aaron Levy, a young American secular Jew who has run into a roadblock on his own research attempting to find a “Jewish Connection” in the writings Shakespeare. Helen and Aaron find their collaboration both uneasy and deeply rewarding.Further dramatic tension is provided by the fact that Helen’s ploy of having the college (from which she is about to retire) acquire the documents for conservation and archiving immediately raises the specter of academic competitiveness. It soon becomes obvious that the papers include the writing of Ester Velasquez, the ward of the blind Rabbi Moseh HaCoen Mendes, a Portuguese Jew. Having fled Portugal for the relative safety of Amsterdam after the Inquisition killed his parents and blinded him, Rabbi Mendes has been sent to London to try to assist the struggling Jewish community there. The existence of a female scribe writing in 17th Century London just before plague and then fire decimated the city is remarkable enough. However, as Helen and Aaron continue to delve into Ester’s writings an incredible back-story emerges. This woman was not only a scribe, but a philosopher as well, determined to connect with some of the great – and, in the opinion of most other people of that era heretical – thinkers of her time. As the story weaves back and forth between Ester’s traumas and those of Helen and Aaron as they seek to discover the reality of who this woman was and what she really represented (before being “scooped” by other investigators), great depth and richness of thought evolves.As mentioned in my opening comments, this is not a book I could recommend to someone seeking light or trivial reading. However, it is profound, fascinating and deeply engaging for anyone who is concerned with the fundamental issues Rachel Kadish so brilliantly addresses through the words and thoughts of her extraordinary characters.

There are long passages in this book, letters written by Ester to the philosophers of her day, in contemplation of the likely impossibility of the existence of God. At one point, Aaron Levy, the present-day scholar, wonders if he is even able to understand her missives.And this is my problem with this good book. The writing was beautiful, but dense and often cryptic; I sometimes had trouble understanding it, and many of the letters and scenes went on for too long.And yet I highlighted 27 excerpts, whether for the beauty of the writing or its resonance.On the very first page, describing Helen Watt: "Hope against reason: an opiate she'd long abandoned." What great characterization. As was the subtle yet plainspoken paragraph alerting us that Watt is very ill. The writing was so beautiful at times, I read it aloud to my husband, savoring the work of a true craftsman.The story progresses along three lines: that of Ester Velasquez, who lives in London, c. 1660; and of the modern-day scholars Watt and Levy. One theme of the book could be "how will you use your life? Will you live it fully or squander it?"-- in self-containment (Watt); the cowardice of the late-maturer (Levy); or by accepting cultural repression of women (Velasquez).As Levy learns about Velasquez having to hide her intellect, and the degree to which she suffers isolation because of her mind, his understanding grows in regard to the woman he loves, and women in general. This is a coming-of-age story. Levy is twenty five, beautiful, gifted with women, and stuck. He's unhappy and unsure of himself.Watt, gravely ill but persevering at the unlocking of the mystery of Ester, also examines her own life, with a lengthy flashback to when she was a young woman in love. Her fear of that love shaped her entire life, and it's only at the end and through her work with Levy that she achieves clarity in this regard.So, good character arcs, incredibly rich historical details, lots of good in this book, but overall, too long, opaque, and subtle for me. My apologies to the author, who must be a gifted scholar herself to have completed this work.

An amazing story, told through three individuals, in three times, but so connected. While parts are difficult to understand, those that were supposed to be written in the seventeenth century, the meanings still come through, or at least the wonderful minds of those times. I would reccomend this to anyone interested in those times in England, and of Portugal, and their Jews, but also in the coming of age of two individuals, one a young man and the other, an aging women professor, neari ng retirement

The story begins when a young couple inherit a 17th century manor in Richmond, a suburb of London. During renovations, a treasure trove of 17th century documents are discovered written in Portuguese, Hebrew, Castilian. and Latin. A crusty, very British female professor and a cocky Jewish American pre-doctoral student are asked to authenticate and translate the documents. In chapters that alternate between the 21st and the 17th centuries, the reader shares in both the life of painstaking historical research and document conservation and the hardships of the diaspora Jewish community returning to England at the behest of Cromwell. We dwell in the home of a learned, saintly rabbi, blinded during the Inquisition who is summoned to London to re-build the once exiled Jewish community. Who is his scribe and what is the importance of these documents to the past, the present and the future? How does an historian distinguish between fact and his/her own interpretations of people and events? This novel is a very dense read, packed with historical information., but the twists and turns in the narrative will dispel any pre-conceived notions the reader might form. Be warned that this is a difficult book to put down and certainly whets the appetite of the reader to explore more about the 17th century .
