After dining at Michael Mina's at the Bellagio, I wanted to get my wife to recreate the experience of the Chef's Tasting Menu at home. Not all of it at once mind you.Most of his recipe's are available on his website including the Lobster Pot Pie - that was truly to die for. Although after the fantastic experience at the restaurant, I pitched in to get the book - the pictures in the book are beautiful which I do not think you get with the recipes on his website.My wife loves the book - although home cooks should be warned that the recipes are extremely detailed and require you to get your mise en place on. However, the results are outstanding - if you follow the recipe and use the exact ingredients.

If you've ever had the opportunity (or pocketbook) to dine in one of Michael Mina's restaurants, this book dissects some of their best dishes. I was eager to try some of them, but was a bit dismayed by the level of difficulty. I know, what was I thinking, right?Most of the recipes require a lot of prep time as well as ingredients and techniques not familiar with the home cook ( I have yet to find a grocery store that carries truffles). If you are looking for something elegant that you can whip up in a flash you may want to look into a different book.I did however, enjoy the book much more after dining in one of his restaurants. I actually received a signed copy of his book for free when I ordered the Chef's Tasting menu. Pretty cool, except that I paid over $400 for dinner for two!!!My favorite is the lobster pot pie - to die for. I guess you could substitute some of the steps such as the handmade crust, or even rolling it over the pot, but then it would not be an authentic "Mina" experience. if you have the skills to master any of the dishes, you will definitely wow your guests.As long as this book is not approached like a practical cookbook, you won't be disappointed.

This cookbook presents a trio concept of using a basic food treatment in three different presentations. For example, seared scallops with three different sauces and garnishes to be eaten as one meal course. An interesting idea, and the recipes are not too complicated. However, the format of how the recipes are presented is complicated and confusing.

There is not much to say apart from this book is inspiring and some great ideas in here. To prepare a complete dish is alot of work but the sub components work well for the creative home chef. I bought mine on the Amazon marketplace used.

This is a fantastic book. Michael shares his most famous recipes - the recipes are pictured and the instructions are written in an easy to follow manner. This book is not for a beginning cook but rather, for someone who enjoys a culinary challenge.

It looked used which was a bit disappointing, but it is in great shape and is very usable and it came on time.

My gift list includes a man who already has everything. He loves fine dining and creating gourmet meals using recipes from his hundreds of cookbooks. When he discovers a cookbook by a favorite chef, it goes on his wish list. As soon as he mentioned he'd seen Michael Mina's cookbook at Williams Sonoma, I looked into it. They were selling it for list price, $50. I was able to find the same book on Amazon.com for $31.50 - more than a third off list price. It arrived very quickly, too. This is a great way to purchase books.

Albuquerque Impressions is a lovely book with dozens of carefully chosen photographs of Albuquerque and the area immediately surrounding that city. Though this, to be sure, is a "picture book" in every sense of that term, it is also a volume for anyone who visits (or even lives in) New Mexico and who stops by its largest city. Albuquerqure is a beautiful, fascinating city and it provides loads of memories of many of its most interesting sites.

Beautiful photos of some common and not so common locations around ABQ. My office would give these away as departure gifts. People really loved them!

Talk about an eye opening experience. How did we not learn any of this in school? Shame. The imagery of the sewer system flushing the perceived worthlessness of life is a heartbreaking one. I'm a third of the way through the book. It's hard to read but entirely necessary.

The hardcover version includes, at the bottom of many pages, the author's notes. These notes should be considered an essential part of the book. They are interesting and designed to enhance and embellish the text. Do not purchase the paperback version, because it does not include those essential notes by the author.Obviously, this book (in hardcover form with the notes) is essential reading-- everyone who is able should invest the time to absorb this important, very moving, stereotype-shattering, great/classic work of non-fiction. According to Wikipedia, since 2009 this book (in Russian) has been required reading by Russian high school students (in Russia).

A must-read for those of us raised in comfort. A reminder that life needn't be (and through most of human history, wasn't) so comfortable. It is a reminder of the dangers posed by Authoritarianism, and a lesson that "evil" is not "out there" somewhere, lurking in a foreign land, but swirling amidst the "good" in the heart of every man. The vagaries of fate and disposition can leave any man as either executor or executed... or both at different times.A few quotes:"If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart? During the life of any heart this line keeps changing place; sometimes it is squeezed one way by exuberant evil and sometimes it shifts to allow enough space for good to flourish. One and the same human being is, at various ages, under various circumstances, a totally different human being. At times he is close to being a devil, at times to sainthood. But his name doesn't change, and to that name we ascribe the whole lot, good and evil. Socrates taught us: Know thyself! Confronted by the pit into which we are about to toss those who have done us harm, we halt, stricken dumb: it is after all only because of the way things worked out that they were the executioners and we weren't.”“Ideology—that is what gives evildoing its long-sought justification and gives the evildoer the necessary steadfastness and determination. That is the social theory which helps to make his acts seem good instead of bad in his own and others' eyes, so that he won't hear reproaches and curses but will receive praise and honors. This cannot be denied, nor passed over, nor suppressed.”“There is a simple truth which one can learn only through suffering: in war not victories are blessed but defeats. Governments need victories and the people need defeats. Victory gives rise to the desire for more victories. But after a defeat it is freedom that men desire—and usually attain. A people needs defeat just as an individual needs suffering and misfortune: they compel the deepening of the inner life and generate a spiritual upsurge."

This is a must read and should be required reading at the universities. Young people need to understand that it is important to truly understand the ideologies that you latch on to as they have very real consequences.

I have not finished this book but saw a review that said there were no author's notes in this version of The Gulag Archipelago.This is not true. This version, the red-covered Volume 1 of the Gulag Archipelago DOES have authors notes, and lots of them. However, the abridged version which is by the same publisher and has a similar cover to this book, does not have author's notes obviously. Just clearing up this confusion. This Volume 1 does have the original author's notes.

One of the greatest tragedies in the history of mankind, period. The Soviets outdid Hitler and imprisoned and killed around 14 million of their own people. It's mind boggling! And it's true. Sadly, it's still happening, on a much smaller scale, but this system is still in use to this day. Solzhenitsyn has done a wonderful job of collecting numerous prisoner accounts and turning them into a very readable series of literature, despite the danger it brought to him and those close to him. He will always be a hero of mankind, in my eyes.

Read this book. It is one of the most powerful things ever written. It acts as a history of Soviet Russia, and a insightful depiction of Soviet the process of arrest in Soviet Russia. This Volume of The Gulag Archipelago covers the process of Arrest, the Corrupt courts, the various statutes under which people were charged as well as many stories about people within the Soviet system. IT is difficult to summarize this aspect, but the ideas contained herein deserve consideration.Please read this book, if you read it seriously it may give you insights into human nature that you need.
